Destroy Army before Province

L5R CCG Rules board, 10 November 2007 to 13 November 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

OK - Attacker Defeats Defender at a province. Attacker's current Force is higher then the Defender's Force + Province Strength.

We move to Battle Resolution:>

If the Attacker Wins:

The Attacker simultaneously destroys all cards in the defending army.

<<Can Assigning blame be played?>> <<Can an Adeiko token now be placed?>>

If the attacking army's Force was greater than the defending army’s Force plus the Province Strength of the province the current battlefield is associated with, the Attacker destroys the province. This is an effect of battle resolution.

<<IF an Adeiko token render's the army's force now lower then Defender + province strength - is the Province Saved?>>

The Attacker gains Honor from resolution equal to twice the number of cards in the defending army that were destroyed by the effects of resolution. Before the Attacker gains 1 or more points of Honor from resolution, if the attacking army contains one or more dishonorable Personalities, these Personalities are all restored to honorable status, and the Honor gain from resolution is negated.

<<If Assigning Blame was played to dishoner one of the attacking peeps - that peep is now honorable, but no other honor is gained from Battle Resolution?>>

We are trying to figure out the nuances of reaction timing and Battle Resolution, thanks!

The Attacker simultaneously destroys all cards in the defending army.

<<Can Assigning blame be played?>>

Yes. It responds to the destruction.

<<Can an Adeiko token now be placed?>>

No. She only responds once all the non-delayed effects of Battle Resolution are resolved. This means she waits until the Army Destruction, Honor Gains, and Province Destruction have all been resolved.

Even if you did somehow lower Force in response to destruction, the reference is in the past-tense. You only compare the total numbers ONCE, then you go through the process of resolving the effects without regard for further changes to those numbers.

Otherwise the Crab's old Yu traits would've actually saved provinces ...

That should work out just fine for battles won by the Attacker or the Defender, since Destruction comes first, then Honor Gains / Rehonoring. It would not work with a Tie, though. That process puts Rehonoring first, and then Destruction.
