Two questions about Share the Blame

L5R CCG Rules board, 5 November 2007 to 9 November 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I'm not sure if any of this has been asked before.

Share the Blame: Political Reaction: After another player targets a Courtier with an action, dishonor one of your Courtiers: Dishonor the Courtier the other player targeted. You, then the other player, each lose 3 Honor.

Question 1: My opponent uses his Sachina and targets one of my courtiers with personal honor of 2. I react with Share the Blame, so my courtier is now dishonored, therefore his personal honor drops to zero. Now he is no longer a legal target for Sachina. What happens next? - Sachina's action fails, now my courtier is no longer a legal target. - The targetting was met nevertheless, and the courtier bows. - Sachina may target any other card with higher personal honor and bow the new target.

Yoritomo Sachina: Mantis Clan • Courtier • Unique • Loyal • Advisor from the Shogun Political Open: Bow Sachina: Bow a target Personality with greater Personal Honor. The target's controller may dishonor him.

Question 2: I'm playing against a Shizuka Toshi deck. My opponent announces the stronghold's action, and targets one of his courtiers, and one of mine. I want to react with Share the Blame in order to dishonor his courtier.

Are both Shizuka Toshi targets announced at the same time, or must I react to his first target before he targets any of my personalities? Does the same apply against a Deception's Veil Dojo action?

Shizuka Toshi: Limited: Bow one of your target Courtiers or Artisans: Target another player's Personality. That player may choose to dishonor him (even if already dishonorable). If he chooses not to, gain 3 Honor.

- Sachina's action fails, now my courtier is no longer a legal target.

That's the correct outcome, as per the following rule.

From the point when the action is announced legally to the point where the targeting is required, if any of the action’s required targeting is interfered with and required targeting can no longer be met, the action’s effects do not resolve and its costs are waived. It is still considered taken, but not resolved. If it was on an Action card, the card is discarded normally.

As found in the Comprehensive Rules.

- The targetting was met nevertheless, and the courtier bows.

This is only true if the target becomes illegal, "after all targeting and reactions to targeting occurs." It isn't after reactions, yet.

They are announced in the order printed on the card. You have to react to his first target before he targets your personalities. He'll be sure to target someone other than your Courtier you are dishonoring to play Share the Blame. This also holds true for Deception's Veil Dojo.
