Determination vs Misdirection followup

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 September 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Zen's answer in this thread surprises me...

Determination: Dark Virtue Reaction: Before you announce an action, target one of your Samurai: The action can not have its effects negated or have its targeting changed. After the action destroys any Personality, remove him from the game.

Misdirection: Political Gozoku Reaction: Before another player would choose targets for one of his action’s effects during a battle, target one of your Courtier or Gozoku Personalities: You choose the targets instead.

Misdirection seems clear about being played before targeting takes place, so that targets are not changed, it's just that who chooses them changes. And Determination (at least the MRP) says nothing about changing who makes the choice.

Does the ruling stand?

Rules Junta looked at this and agreed with me that "targeting can not be changed" is interpreted broadly. That is, no changes to the how the targeting is done, what can and can't be targeted, or what has been targeted after the fact.
