Broken Lines vs. Test of Courage

L5R CCG Rules board, 17 August 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Broken Lines (KD) "Reaction: Before battle resolution at a province, if you control one or zero Personalities: The Attacker chooses to either move all units in his army home, or bow 2 cards in his army (he can choose this even if he has fewer than 2 cards in his army)."

Test of Courage (SE) "Reaction: Before an action moves one of your target Personalities home from a battlefield: Negate the movement. You can not target the Personality with actions or bow him to pay costs (until the turn ends)."

If BL is played against me, can I choose to move my units home, THEN cancel the movement with ToC? My opponent argued that because it was my choice in the first place, I couldn't. I argued that whatever my choice it was still an effect on the card, so I still hould be able to cancel it.

Yes.
