Required Targeting-Need Ruling

L5R CCG Rules board, 10 August 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

In previous posts the question came up as to whether targeting from an effect, after the constraints block, is a required targeting or a cost? It is clearly not a cost, as costs are listed inside the constraints block and effects outside of the constraints block. In the examples below, is the targeting from the first effect required before the second effect can take place?

The Scorpion's Strength Battle: Target one of your Scorpion Clan Personalities: Bow, then move home, a target dishonorable Personality opposing him. You may target and dishonor a Personality in the enemy army.

Allegations Political Battle: Target one of your unbowed Magistrates: Dishonor a target Personality opposing him with Personal Honor lower than your Magistrate's Chi. The opposing target's controller chooses whether to bow him or move him home.

Thanks!

So why didn't you wait for an answer to that post?

Rules, Abilities, Required targeting: "An action’s required targets consist of anything that is targeted by the player taking the action in the action's constraints or effects, unless the targeting is shown to be optional(.)"
