Saya and Seppuku

L5R CCG Rules board, 1 August 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If I target a samurai personality with Bayushi Saya nonxp and later that turn, that personality performs an action, can they seppuku?

Samurai Edition seppuku states that after a personality is targeted or performs an action that causes them an honor loss. If I'm reading things right, the honor loss from the samurai performing an action is caused by saya and not the action. Since Saya has long since targeted the personality, I think the window to use the Seppuku reaction has passed.

Reaction: Any number of times per turn, before you lose Honor from an action that targeted or was performed by one of your Courtier or Samurai Personalities: He commits seppuku. If the seppuku destroyed him, reduce the Honor loss to one.

This should be the same as the published Samurai Rulebook, save for "if the seppuku destroyed him," clause in the last sentence. The update in the Comprehensive Rules simply added the requirement to actually die in the seppuku for it to reduce the Honor Loss - no half-hearted ritual suicide attempts will do!
