Assigning Blame during Battle Resolution

L5R CCG Rules board, 26 July 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

My opponent has -18 honor. He attacks my last province with a 10 force army, enough to defeat my defending 1 force unit and still take my province. I leave a courtier at home (for Assigning Blame).

He wins the battle and my unit is destroyed. I play Assigning Blame, dishonoring one of his personalities and causing him to lose 3 honor, and winning the game before my province is destroyed, OR...

He wins the battle, gains 2 honor for destroying one card in the opposing (my) army, then dishonors a personality and loses 3 from Assigning Blame, bringing him to -19. My last province is destroyed, and I lose.

Basically, does the honor gain for destroying opposing personalities happen before or after the reaction on Assigning Blame?

Assigning Blame Political Reaction: After one of your Personalities is destroyed, if you control a Courtier: Dishonor a target Personality. His controller loses 3 Honor; this loss can be negated but not reduced.

B. Follow one of the procedures under this heading, in order, depending on the battle’s outcome.

If the Attacker Wins:

* The Attacker simultaneously destroys all cards in the defending army. This is an effect of battle resolution.

* If his force exceeds the defending army’s Force plus the Province Strength of the province the current battlefield is associated with, he destroys the province. This is an effect of battle resolution.

* The Attacker gains Honor from resolution equal to twice the number of cards in the defending army that were destroyed by the effects of resolution. Before the Attacker gains 1 or more points of Honor from resolution, if the attacking army contains one or more dishonorable Personalities, these Personalities are all restored to honorable status, and the Honor gain from resolution is negated.

The order is clear:

1.) Destroy Army 2.) Destroy Province 3.) Gain Honor / Restore Personalities to Honor

Reactions are played and resolved in response to their appropriate triggers. A Reaction to a destruction that happens in the first step (Destroy Army) is played and resolved well before you move on to the second step (Destroy Province) or the third step (Gain Honor).
