Wording on Rulebook Tactical Battle ability

L5R CCG Rules board, 2 July 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

According to the latest rulebook, all tacticians can perform the following ability. Here's exactly what the rulebook states on the subject:

An action with the Tactical keyword can only be performed by a Tactician Personality (see Perform). A Tactical action that is not performed by any card can only be taken if one of your unbowed Tacticians is at the current battlefield. Each Tactician can only perform one Tactical action per turn. All players can take the following Tactical Battle Action. Keep in mind that, due to the above rule, it can only target each individual Tactician once per turn:

Tactical Battle: Any number of times per turn, discard a card and target one of your Tactician Personalities: Give him a Force bonus equal to the Focus Value of the discarded card.

The way this is phrased seems to suggest that I may use the Tactical Battle action in order to increase ANY tactician that I wish to target's force by the focus value of the card I discarded. This would represent a change from the way it used to be, in which a tactician may only increase HIS OWN force that way.

For example, it seems that I could have Matsu Robun (a tactician with no printed tactical battle ability) and Matsu Yoshino (a tactician with a very good printed tactical battle ability) in the same battle. Robun could use his rulebook Tactical Battle to "target one of my Tactician personalities" and give him a force boost. This could target Yoshino, since he's a tactician, right?

Now, the top line does state that each tactician can only be targeted by this ability once, which would prevent me from having 4 different tacticians each target the same tactician for an ungodly amount of force, but the way that it's worded does make it seem like tacticians have more flexibility with their ability this time around, allowing them to increase the force of a different tactician instead of their own if they choose (allowing one to plan a strategy that conserves a vital tactician's ability for later while still boosting his force, perhaps).

Is this an intended change, or is this just an awkwardly-worded segment of the rulebook? It does seem like the sort of thing tactics would involve, because it adds strategy to it, but I'm not sure a change was intended.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Didn't notice that there was a rulebook thread in the L5R General section, but I don't want to double post. Would it be more appropriate for me to post this concern there? Sorry for the trouble.

No. "Give him" refers back to the targeted Tactician.
