A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, I just read this: (referencing The Portals Open and Hidden Warrens)
Yeah, those 2 cards provide the basis for "Rat in a Can" out of the other factions (except Spider/Shadowlands).
Does this mean I can not use The Portals Open under the Spider's Lair to make my Ratlings cheaper?

(Can I) use The Portals Open under the Spider's Lair to make my Ratlings cheaper?
Under Lotus rules, no. Ratling Personalities have an alignment.
Under Samurai rules, yes. Ratling Personalities have no alignment.
