Lotus Edition Rulings/Errata

L5R CCG Rules board, 11 October 2005

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from the Wayback Machine (its copy), so posts it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Jeff Alexander (rules official), 11 October 2005

Cards in all areas are either face-up or face-down. Cards in discard piles and outside the game are always face-up. Effects that refer to face-up or face-down cards can target and affect such cards in all areas except "outside the game".

In addition, we are adding the following paragraph immediately following:

"Cards normally enter decks face-down. Cards normally enter play and discard piles, and leave the game, face-up. Cards normally enter any other play area, such as a Province or a player's hand, without changing their current facing."

(This rules clarification allows several cards to function as originally intended, including Asatte, Kettei, and Timely Arrival.)

Earlier Sets

Daidoji Armor: Its Reaction can only be used if you control at least one unit in your current army. [errata]

Lotus Edition

Crystal Mine: Its Gold cost is 3. Its Gold production is 6. [errata]

Tsuruchi Nobumoto (non-Experienced): His Honor Requirement is "-". [errata]

Asatte: Its Focus Value is 2. [errata]

Clarifications and Unresolved Ruling Issues

Nanashi Mura: This Stronghold is not legal in any play format other than Draft, as it has no inherent Faction affiliation.

Brilliant Artisan: This card is legal in the Open constructed format.

Utaku Keyo: This card is distinct from the Utaku Keyo in Dark Allies.

Ratling Village

The stipulation "to a minimum of 1" affects the Ratling Personality's total Gold cost for the same duration as the reduction by 2. Further Gold cost reductions, such as the 2-Gold discount for purchasing a Personality from one's own Faction, cannot be used later to bring the card's cost entirely to 0.

Mirumoto vs. the Duelist trait

This is a case of card text overriding the rules, not two simultaneous triggered effects. Mirumoto's trait of "Mirumoto focuses first, with 1 or 2 cards, and must focus if able." takes priority over the rulebook rule that a Duelist who's challenging Mirumoto can focus first.

Titles and the Keyword Rule

This ruling is effective immediately.

All cards implicitly have all words in their title as boldface traits. These traits can be removed independently. This will change whether the card is "a <keyword> card" but will not change the card's title.

General Timing

A Reaction or triggered effect taken relative to winning or losing a battle or duel occurs relative to the end of that battle or duel. For example, a Reaction you play "after you win a duel" is played with the same timing as if it were written "after a duel ends that you won", rather than immediately after comparing the final Chi of both dueling Personalities but before the duel's own results for winning and losing.
