Keywords and implied traits again.

L5R CCG Rules board, 9 June 2005

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from the Wayback Machine (its copy), so posts it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

i will ask again. It is important to me.

-First I have some doubts about what constitues a single trait and what not.

There are known traits, like samurai, shugenja, shadowlands...

Usually bold faced traits are separated in a card by bold black points.

So we have some cards that are either, Oni, Shadowlands Oni , Air Oni, phoenix clan air shugenja, some of them have between those 2 bold points more than one keyword that implies a separate trait and other do not.

So when a card like P'an ku is copying a trait from some of those cards, what is he copying exactly, a known trait, or the entire chain of traits between those 2 bold points?

-Second, there are differences between being a “X card” and having a “ X trait”.

I cannot copy the X trait from an X card if it does not have the X trait, (copying the oni trait from Hasaiki no Oni is not possible).

Some traits give their cards other implied traits (rulebook pag 65).

Undead in the glossary gives it’s card the shadowlands trait.

Oni in the glossary merely says that all Oni cards are Shadowlands.

Therefore Oni cards are shadowlands cards , which is different from gaining the shadowlands trait.

As pointed before there are differences between being an X card and having an X trait.

So my questions is: Tokei exp 2’s ability checks for the “shadowlands trait”, if Tokei gains the Oni trait, it would be considered by glossary a shadowlands card but it does not have the Shadowlands trait, so what will do it’s ability, bow or unbow?

Finally If an implied trait is lost is it regained automatically or is it lost, ( Omen and an undead cards )

Thanks.

Each word is a separate trait.

Exceptions: faction alignments, tribe names, and "Clan Champion".

Numerals are part of the trait, not a separate one. "Yu 3" is one trait. So is "Experienced 2".

-Second, there are differences between being a “X card” and having a “ X trait”.

Actually, there aren't. "Is an X card" and "has the X trait" are equivalent. Unless you are dealing expressly with the term "boldface trait", it does not matter whether a keyword is in a card's text area or title.

I cannot copy the X trait from an X card if it does not have the X trait, (copying the oni trait from Hasaiki no Oni is not possible).

Yes, it is.

Oni in the glossary merely says that all Oni cards are Shadowlands.

Therefore Oni cards are shadowlands cards , which is different from gaining the shadowlands trait.

It's not different. They also have the trait.

So my questions is: Tokei exp 2’s ability checks for the “shadowlands trait”, if Tokei gains the Oni trait, it would be considered by glossary a shadowlands card but it does not have the Shadowlands trait, so what will do it’s ability, bow or unbow?

Bow.

Finally If an implied trait is lost is it regained automatically or is it lost, ( Omen and an undead cards )

The last effect to occur takes priority. If a card is implicitly Shadowlands due to being Undead (for example), and that card loses the Shadowlands trait until the turn ends, it will continue not being a Shadowlands card until the turn ends (or until it loses and regains the Undead trait, or gains another trait that gives it Shadowlands implicitly, if such a thing happens first).
