Blade of the Master, Gozoku Pawn, and targeting

L5R CCG Rules board, 27 February 2005

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from the Wayback Machine (its copy), so posts it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If I have no personalities in play with lower chi than the targeted personality my opponent or another player controls can I use Blade of the master or gozoku pawn's ability on my opponent's personality?

No. You must have legal targets to announce an action (Diamond rulebook, pg. 73).

This seems to contradict the rulesheet from Web of Lies, Zen. Would you clarify, please?

All sentences before the action's effects that start with "Target..." are targeting requirements of the action, and must be satisfied by the player taking the action for the action to be legal (with the usual exception made for Delayed Terrains). Any targeting that occurs later in the card is a part of its effects, does not need to be done when the action is announced, and will not make the action illegal if no valid targets exist.

Blade of the Master's targeting requirements appear to be "an opposing Personality."

Gozoku Pawn's targeting requirements appear to be "a Personality controlled by another player."

The other instances of targeting for each of them (the challenged personality) appear to be part of the cards' effects.

New rules. Huh. I was wrong.
