Simultaneous end of boni/mali....

L5R CCG Rules board, 7 February 2005 to 8 February 2005

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from the Wayback Machine (its copy), so posts it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

When a card has received both a chi bonus and a chi malus that both last until the end of the turn,do they:a)simultaneously dissapear,or b)sequentially?

Example:Random 2-chi personality is on the receiving end of a "written in blood".Its controller reacts with "Shi-Tien Yen Wang temple",giving it a +1 chi bonus, and a new lease in life. What happens at the end of the turn?

If it's a,then the personality is back to its normal 2 chi,and nothing happens. However,if it's b,then logically the active player would choose which expires first, the bonus or the malus, resulting possibly at the death of the personality(if he chooses the bonus to expire first).

I seem to recall an old ruling on the subject, that the expiration of boni/mali at the same time are not considered to be conflicting events, and thus no choice is ever involved:they just expire simultaneously. However,I can't seem to find that ruling, and my above statement is hotly disputed by several of my fellow players(especially shadowlands). With the mouzaka championshipHere in Greece less than 2 weeks, away,I'd really like this clarified.I'd appreciate an official answer as soon as possible.

There is a ruling in the l5r-ccg archive *somewhere*, I asked this in relation to chi-penalities and Uncertainty.

Good luck finding it though, it was about 9 months ago at least.

Simultaneously.

Thanks for the quick reply,Zen,but just to clarify it further:in no way is there ever a choice,by any player, about which one ends first,i.e. they are not considered conflicting effects, right?(this is actually the point of contention between a lot of players:even if they end simultaneously,if they are concidered to be conflicting, then active player chooses).

Give an example of how they might conflict by ending simultaneously.

Please note, that deciding if a person suffers chi-death for the bonus ending first is not a conflict. By ending them simultaneously, the person's Chi instantly reverts to whatever it would be without the modifiers, hence no conflict. I think those people are trying to claim there is a conflict where there is none in order to gain a desireable result.

That's my take on the subject, too. However,I can definitely see the other side's argument. That's why, even though I believe Zen answered it clearly,

I'm asking him(or another rules junta)to reply again,in detail,so that there's no possibility of misinterpretation.
