Suitengu's Surge and Price of Power

L5R CCG Rules board, 5 February 2005

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from the Wayback Machine (its copy), so posts it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If I discard Price of Power to pay the cost of it's effect then target both my own and my opponents units, both units are then destroyed.

No problems there.

My question is: Can Suitengu's Surge then be used to spare my unit from destruction by removing them from play before the event's effects occur?

You can remove the unit with surge, but I would say it would also negate your opponent's from blowing up, as one of the effects had been negated.

There is no rule that all effects must resolve.

"All effects of an action or Event are separate, and all the ones that are not negated still occur." L5R Diamond Rulebook, pg. 72

Just to clarify.

Okay, I got confused with the multiple targets thing (e.g. Bishamon's Fury).

Thanks a lot for the super speedy clarification.

Yeah, but isn´t destroying your personallity a cost? Meaning if you remove him doesn´t that negate the action since you didn´t pay the cost?

No, discarding the card is a cost. Destroying your personality is an effect of the card, just as destroying the opposing unit is.

No (card text, Web of Lies rulesheet).
