Toturi, Seven Thunder - exp2CW wording

L5R CCG Rules board, 4 September 2015 to 11 September 2015

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hello,

since its preview, I got a couple of question that bug me about Toturi's Battle wording.

Here it is : Tireless Battle: Toturi unites the Lion Clan. Another target Personality's printed abilities may be used an additional time this turn. Straighten them or take an additional action.

1) "them" As I read, it's Tireless, this is OK, it's a Battle, this is alright. Then, we have a sentence written in italic : Toturi unites the Lion Clan. As I understand it, italic means flavour text without incidence over the rule, like on Asako Hiribe (20F) "You suspect him of the taint." or Bayushi Fuyuko exp (ThA) "Fuyuko sow seeds of distrust." Those sentences are not on the bottom of the text box, like a flavour text, it's in the wording of the action (Battle or Open) lke Toturi, Seven Thunder. And I like it, it's part of the fun.

Then, second setence of Toturi's ability, no problem, it target another Personality. And the last sentence : "Straighten them"

I'm not sure to understand who is "them" ; note that English is not my native tongue. "Them" is plural, but in the relevant (non-Italic) part of the text box, I find only one target, the another personality targeted by Toturi's action. So, should I take into account the italic part ? Then, I have Toturi, the now united Lion Clan and the targeted Personality. So, does this Battle : a) Straighten Toturi, his target and every Lion Clan cards ("the Lion Clan") b) Straighten Toturi and his target (I guess it's the good one) c) Straighten the targeted Personality and every Lion Clan cards

2) Target If Toturi is alone, after having united the Lion Clan, and depending on the answer above, can he straighten himself or take an additional action without having targeted another Personality to use his or her ability an addtional time this turn ?

Thanks for your answers and your time.

"Them" is gaining wide acceptance in use as a gender-neutral singular pronoun, and it is used as such in this case, referring to the targeted Personality only.
