Way of the Crane Vs Ring of Earth

L5R CCG Rules board, 15 August 2015 to 19 August 2015

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A player, 15 August 2015

If my opponent plays Way of the Crane, I refuse the duel, but do not want to go home and play a Ring of Earth, do I successfully refuse the duel and stay in the battle?

I've had players claiming it works when they do it and others claiming it doesn't when I do it.

You have the sequence slightly wrong; you would choose to Interrupt with the Ring of Earth after the opponent targeted your Personality, but before the action's effects would take place (including your option to refuse). Interrupts are only take at the point where the colon appears in an action.

However, you don't want to do that, because if the movement is negated, the refusal does not happen. The word "to" before some effects mean that the effects that precede the "to" must happen in order for the other effects to happen.
