Hi,
If I play Inspired Leadership paying its Invest cost and the actions effects are negated, would I still get an additional action?
Thanks
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Hi,
If I play Inspired Leadership paying its Invest cost and the actions effects are negated, would I still get an additional action?

Effects from an Invest trait are separate to the effects from the Invest'd action, so you would still get an additional action.
See the Comprehensive Rules p52: An Invest cost on a Strategy may be added to the cost of any action the player is taking from the Strategy. If it creates distinct effects, as opposed to just modifying the action, they resolve after the action’s effects.
Following this topic.
This ruling seems somehow incoherent with the current redaction of the Comprehensive Rules (p 53, emphasis mine) :
**** Invest: This is a trait that starts with “Invest” and a Gold cost (for example, “Invest (2):”). When paying for a card entering play, a player may increase its Gold cost by the additional cost in its Invest trait, once, to get an additional effect after it enters play (for example, “Gain 1 Honor” or “Give this card a +2F token.”) Things that can pay for the card type entering play can also pay for the Invest cost. However, when Invest appears on a non-Strategy card, its effects come from the Invest trait, not the action that brought the card into play.
An Invest cost on a Strategy may be added to the cost of any action the player is taking from the Strategy. If it creates distinct effects, as opposed to just modifying the action, they resolve after the action’s effects. Things that can pay for an action on a Strategy can also pay for an Invest cost on a Strategy. *****
The first underlined sentence n°1 (§1) is related to Invest trait in non-Strategy cards, and is not reproduced on §2, which is related to Invest trait in Strategy cards. So, a contrario, the reader will probably understand that an Invest effect on a Strategy card actually comes from the action (of the Strategy card).
The reference to "distinct effects" in §2 (underlined sentence n°2) do not clarify that, because it only gives timing information (when do effect resolves) and not source information (from where the effect comes).
The ruling states that "Effects from an Invest trait are separate to the effects from the Invest'd action,", but this answer is not obvious regarding the above CR informations. Furthermore, if the Invest effect is not a part of the actions effects, it could come from the trait, but then it is unclear how (and when) a trait on a Strategy could be triggered during the resolution of its action.
Thank you for supplementary clarifications !
