Numeral

L5R CCG Rules board, 12 May 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Does L5R have a specific definition of the word 'numeral'? I can't find anything in the comprehensive rules, which would lead me to believe that the plain English definition is correct:

(as a noun from the OED) "A word denoting or expressing a number."

In a completely unrelated question, how should a player read a card if the reminder text is at odds with the card's rules text, as reminder text is not itself rules text? Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Consider as a numeral anything that denotes a stat's value or modifier. Typically, we write numerals in cards using figures (0, 1, 2, 3...). Things that are not considered numerals will be found written in words ("Target two Samurai", "Show the top three cards", etc. These are not numerals).

Card text takes precedence, of course. If you are completely sure that a reminder text contradicts the rules, it could be because the reminder text is wrong or outdated, but since they're only aides for players, it holds no in-game significance.

I think it's worth noting that Wiktionary precedes its definition 2 - "A word or symbol representing a number" - with "linguistics". If you're in the business of classifying words, then you would describe "two" as "a numeral word", and probably generally shorten that to "a numeral".

The usual English definition of numeral - the only one I was aware of, until today! - is along the lines of definition 1: "A symbol that is not a word and represents a number."
