Deep Harbour

L5R CCG Rules board, 1 May 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Deep Harbour has the text:

[bow]:When paying for a Holding, it enters play for 2 less Gold.

1. At what point in the recruit action do you bow Deep Harbour to ensure that the holding enters play at a reduced cost? Is it when you bow holdings to produce gold as a cost (and what happens if you don't need to produce any gold to buy the holding?), or is it when you begin to bring the holding into play? The text of other cards seems to suggest paying is producing gold, but the recruit action doesn't yet know what is being recruited (a similar issue to Vast Paddy Fields).

"Triggered traits include a trigger – a timing reference...Triggered traits are not optional – they must happen if the trigger occurs." "EXCEPTION: Traits that are triggered when paying a Gold cost, and whose effects produce Gold, are optional; they do not have to be triggered when any given Gold cost is paid."

2. Is the second trait on Deep Harbour a triggered trait (the trigger being 'When paying for a Holding')? If so as this is not a gold-producing trait is it correct that the player has no choice and must bow Deep Harbour at whatever the trigger point is? If this is correct then does the same apply to the following cards?

Akodo Dojo Colonial Dojo Colonial Temple Exotic Market Jade Works School of Wizardry Temple of Harmony

My assumption is that this is not the case, but I can't see through my own ignorance.

1) This is already being discussed, along with the Vast Paddy Fields

2) This traits are optional because they are triggered by gold payment, same as those that produce gold. I'll request a clarification on the wording of the CR so it is clearer that producing gold is not a requisite for the optionality.
