If I have Ogre Bushi out with the Family Sword attached can I use its action to transfer the sword to Ogre Bob?
Thanks in advance.
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
If I have Ogre Bushi out with the Family Sword attached can I use its action to transfer the sword to Ogre Bob?
Thanks in advance.
Ogre is not in the list of Family Names
In follow up to this thread viewtopic.php?f=59&t=108074
Where can the list of family names that the sword will work for be found?
In this new era of "plain English" wording on cards one should not need to carry a lexicon around to know which cards work with which others.
Thanks in advance
Az

Since you asked for it, Az, here's the plain English version:
"Ogre" is the name of the species, it's not a family name.
(I could also point out that "Bushi" is an occupation, so neither part of the card's title fits the "Family Name + Given Name" format.)
Re: this clarification.
Am I correct in assuming within Ivory edition that a family name is the first word of a two-word card name on a personality, with the following additional rules:
1. The first word cannot be a species. 2. The second word cannot be an occupation
Is it therefore correct that the following words are not family names:
Asp (species) Kitsune (species) Shiba (species) Suzume (species) Tonbo (species) Usagi (species)
Is it therefore correct that the following could be family names, but at the moment the only personalities with them have what I assume are occupations rather than given names:
Boyoh (Mercenary) Gaijin (Sorcerer)
Is it therefore correct that the following two-word names are examples of family and given names as they follow all the rules above:
Hantei (XVI) P’an (Ku) The (Shakash), (Sorrow)
Or have I misunderstood and family names are restricted to all first words of two-word names with a clan alignment:
Agasha Phoenix Akodo Lion Asahina Crane Asako Phoenix Bayushi Scorpion Daidoji Crane Daigotsu Spider Doji Crane Goju Spider Hida Crab Hiruma Crab Ichiro Badger Ide Unicorn Ikoma Lion Isawa Phoenix Iuchi Unicorn Kaiu Crab Kakita Crane Kasuga Tortoise Kitsu Lion Kitsuki Dragon Kitsune Mantis Komori Bat Kuni Crab Matsu Lion Mirumoto Dragon Morito Ox Moshi Mantis Moto Unicorn Ninube Spider Shiba Phoenix Shosuro Scorpion Soshi Scorpion Susumu Spider Tamori Dragon The Scorpion Togashi Dragon Toku Monkey Tonbo Dragonfly Torikata Crab Tsi Oriole Tsuruchi Mantis Usagi Hare Utaku Unicorn Yasuki Crab Yogo Scorpion Yoritomo Mantis
If this correct it may be helpful to maintain a list somewhere.
I am unsure as to where the following names fall: Yotsu ??? Chuda Snake Iweko Imperial Otomo Imperial
Tsuruchi is another strange case as it both fits the description of a family name but is also used as the one-word name for another card. Is it still considered a family name for 'Tsuruchi' as well as 'Tsuruchi [x]'? Is this correct for all names which are family names in some instances?

Mike,
Az asked for the plain English version. Do you really need me to define "Family"?
In reply to this post.
As Ogre is a legitimate (albeit old) surname (here and here)*, there is not even a hint of definition of family name in the comprehensive rules (as far as I could tell), and Family Sword could easily have been 'Clan Heirloom' (checking for clan alignment, which is covered by the existing L5R rules), it would be helpful if you could define Family in this context, yes.
*As are many of the words I would guess that you feel are clearly not meant to be family names, such as Boyoh, P'an, Asp etc.
With regards to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=108074#p1421238
All pedantry aside, the answer as to why Ogre Bushi can't move the sword to Ogre Bob was "Ogre is not in the list of Family Names".
The Comprehensive rules HAVE no list of Family Names, so that answer makes no sense.
Perhaps a list of family names needs to be added for it to be used as a rule? Everyone commenting on that thread knows exactly how to use the sword, the problem lies in the fact that "Family Name" isn't covered anywhere in the rules.
Well, since there's no list of Family Names, the answer was obviously right
Update: the CR have been updated with a glosary entry for Family Name and an appendix at the end with the full list of family names.
