how does shadowed estate interact with fate cards that enter play rather than just get discarded after use? such as terrains, katas and rings? if i name the ring of the void and my opponent sill plays it does the ring just go back into his hand or does it get discarded? because it normally would never be discarded anyways... same with katas and terrains.

If the action you're taking is to put them into play, they will be discarded when their action is negated.
If you're taking an action from a card already in play, the action will be negated but the card will remain in play.
Note that the Rings besides Void do not enter play as an action, so Shadowed Estate will not stop them from entering play.
