If I have no units at a battlefield and meet the criteria to put the Ring of Earth into play may I or do I require a unit at the location to do that?

If I have no units at a battlefield and meet the criteria to put the Ring of Earth into play may I or do I require a unit at the location to do that?
The Ring is not played via an action, so action-based constraints on playing it do not apply. You may play it without Presence.
