Ivory Cavarly for Dummie Part Three

L5R CCG Rules board, 23 March 2014 to 24 March 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Ivory Cavalry for Dummies

by Junzo Lives » Sun Mar 23, 2014 12:24 am

As my name implies I played L5R many moons ago in the dark ages of the game. I built and played a dragon/rings deck in Emperor edition but never fully matured into the modern rules.

I am being told all sorts of things about limitation on Cavalry use that just don't seem to jive with my reading of the Ivory rule-book.

So lets say I have 5 personalities in play (#1 a big cavalry guy , #2 & #3 2 small cavalry guys, and #4 & #5 two infantry guys) and would like to go beat some face on my turn.

During my actions phase I can equip followers and items to improve my odds, then I declare an attack. To improve my chances of beating face I want to attack provinces A, B, and C. In my assignment phase I declare #4 & #5 infantry are going to province A. My opponent declares a defense as Province A (heavily defended) Province B (lightly defended) and Province C (undefended).

When and how do I declare #1, #2, and #3 Cavalry personalities. When can I take the Absent Engage ability. Is it limited to only one personality using it per action phase or per battle? Is it limited to only being done once per personality? When and how do I declare "excess" cavalry personalities are attacking if the engagement action is limited?

Please lay it out so it makes sense and jives with what is written.

Thanks, Chad

Cavalry's Absent Engage ability is limited to once per turn, like all other abilities without Repeatable.

You can assign the cavalry Personalities during maneuvers just like the infantry Personalities, and they all assign at the same time. Then, when resolving battles, you can choose to use the cavalry Engage. You can use it to move in a unit from home (one you chose not to assign), or to move a unit from a different province where you assigned it.

So to clarify:

The Cavalry absent engage is limited to once per turn per Personality? Per battlefield? Per Player? I assume it must be done during the Engage portion of the battle and not as an action?

How do you know which abilities are limited to once per turn? Fear, Ranged, and Melee do not have repeatable either are they similarly affected?

Sorry if this sounds obtuse, I'm trying to understand wherein the rules this is spelled out so I can read, digest, and interpret correctly during the game.

Thank you kindly, Chad

The Cavalry Absent Engage is once per turn per player (as are all player abilities unless otherwise stated).

Fear, Ranged and Melee come from the cards they're printed on, rather than the rulebook. Each such instance is once per turn, but if you had, for instance, two copies of Daidoji Kinta in play, each could use his Ranged 4 once per turn

Thanks Again,

Is there a method of determining the difference between a Player ability and a card ability? By looking at them the explanation of Cavalry and Melee seem to be very similar...

As simplistic as it sounds, card abilities are found on cards, either as printed abilities or granted abilities (abilities given to one card by another).

Player abilities are found in the rulebook.
