Sun Returns VS Cavalry

L5R CCG Rules board, 16 March 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Can you use the sun returns to prevent a cavalry engage where the person moving in has no other presence? I.E. My opponent is defending with two personalities, and I have assigned with no one. Can he bow one of his tacticians at the battlefield when I announce cavalry and negate my movement or does he not have the presence to interrupt my movement until my unit is actually at the battlefield? Thanks!

Not sure I understand the question, the statements quite contradict themselves. That, or you have misunderstood what Presence means,

You need Presence to announce The Sun Returns. In particular, you need an unbowed Tactician at the battlefield the Cavalry unit is moving to. But it's completely irrelevant whether the other player had presence or not when he announced the Absent Engage action. The Rule of Presence only forces the player taking the action, not the opponent.
