False Ring of Fire

L5R CCG Rules board, 14 March 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

According the rules reference (page 9): Interrupt abilities on a card out of play may be taken if they Interrupt the action that brings the card into play. In this case, if the action has a “bow this card” cost, it is satisfied by bowing the card after it enters play, as a delayed effect.

1. Does this clarification mean that the False Ring of Fire can interrupt its own entering play action now? This assumes that a card is face-up in the temporary resolution area. 2. If a card is not face-up in the temporary resolution area how do you resolve its text?

Relevant text on False Ring of Fire: Open: If your maximum hand size is 10 or more, put this Ring into play and lose 2 Honor. Interrupt, w: Reduce all Honor gains and losses from an action by 2.

The False Ring of Fire may not Interrupt it's own Open action, "As with traits, abilities on cards not in play or in a resolution, entering-play or focusing area may not be used. (EE CR: Abilities and Actions)"

As to your second point, the Resolution Area is indeed a face-up, out of play, and temporary game area.

These and other Emperor Edition CR entries that were not included in the Ivory Edition Rules Reference doc can be assumed to be unchanged in Ivory Edition.

RULING REVERSED

The False Ring of Fire may indeed Interrupt it's own Open ability to reduce the honor loss.

With regards to this post.

Please can you explain why Jade Pearl Inn can interrupt its recruit actions but False Ring of Fire cannot interrupt its open action? Both cards are in an out-of-play location, which normally would prevent either card from using the interrupt (...abilities on cards not in play or in a resolution...area...may not be used.). This is overruled however, by the exception on page 9 of the rules reference (Interrupt abilities on a card out of play may be taken if they Interrupt the action that brings the card into play.), otherwise Jade Pearl Inn wouldn't function. Under the currently-published rules I cannot see why one is legal and the other is not.
