Dynasty Phase: The extinct End Phase part.

L5R CCG Rules board, 1 February 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

3. Dynasty Phase. Bring Personalities and Holdings into play. Discard face-up Dynasty cards. Draw cards up to your hand size limit (eight).

- From the Advanced Rulebook (page 52)

I'm not an English native speaker, so I got a bit confused about that last part.

Does it mean that:

a) No matter how much End phase draw I get, I can't draw more than my limit (default case, eight). b) My hand size is a definitive treshold, meaning if I already have the maximum, I do not draw a card at the end of the turn (instead of drawing and reducing to #handsize) c) Nothing changed, what the hell are you talking about, man? You draw a card, if you are above the maximum, discard until you aren't. Simple. Geez.

I've got confused because of the 'draw cards up to'. At first sight, I even had a brainfart thinking you drawed a number of cards up to your hand size limit, meaning you would always had a full hand. Then, I started wondering, what if you drawed enough cards during the other phases to have more than your hand size at the end of Dynasty Phase?

Then, the first part of the booklet clarifies my question:

Players have a maximum hand size of eight. After drawing all cards at the end of your turn, if you have more cards in hand than the maximum, you must choose and discard cards from your hand until you no longer have too many. Some effects may change a player’s maximum hand size.

But they still sound conflicting to me. Do you draw a card UP TO YOUR MAXIMUM or can you draw above that, and then discard to respect the treshold?

(to simplify, just answer the last part, the rest is basically rhethoric)

The page 52 of the advanced rulebook is just a summary. The expanded rules are in pg 2-3 and that's what you should follow when looking for details. The final pages are for reference, not for rules questions.

You can still have more cards in your hand than your maximum hand size would allow you, you just have to discard the extras when your turn ends.
