Favor actions + The Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion

L5R CCG Rules board, 1 February 2014 to 5 March 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

1) As discarding the Favor for an action like My Lord's Favor is no longer a cost, but an affect, do I keep my Favor when the shadowed estate called My Lord's Favor?

2) If I havn't got the Favor and the opponent called my Lord's Favor, may I announce the Favor action? In the advanced rulebook is written there will be the good faith rule in the tournament rulebook. Under EE rules good faith says: Aspects of the game state are taken into account in determining legality under the Good Faith Rule, such as effects that reduce costs, prevent costs from being paid, or relax requirements. So concerning the game state I know that I wont have to discard the favor during the action.

The Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion: Tireless Open: Name a Fate card, or name a Dynasty card in play. Negate the effects of the next action from a card with that title.

My Lord's Favor: Favor Political Battle/Open: Discard the Imperial Favor to straighten your target Personality's unit.

1. Yes.

2. Yes, you may, as long as you have it in hand and have a Personality to target. You can't just announce My Lord's Favor without even having the card or the required target, whether you have the Favor or not. That said, because discarding the Favor is an effect, you can even announce and play My Lord's Favor without having the Favor even with the Scorpion Stronghold removed from consideration, just to dump it out of your hand, if you want. All its effects -- discarding the Favor and the subsequent straightening that is conditional upon -- will fail, but such is life?

Is the same true for the Favor Rulebook Abilities? They don't seem to be worded differently. The same for Makoto.

In that case Ring of Air is an auto drop...

Hrm... an excellent point.

Better kick this up to discussion land. Stay tuned!

The Good Faith Rule for IvE will include the fact that in order to take a Favor action, you must either control the Favor or have another way of paying the cost of the discard of the Favor. So you cannot have Favor actions "Fail" to play the Ring of Air.
