Seiken and the intricacies of Battle

L5R CCG Rules board, 16 January 2014 to 17 January 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If I bring Iweko Seikan into play during battle, assuming he got reserve form Concealed Reserves, Satoru Sensei, Moto Naleesh, or some similar effect, does his Interrupt action allow me to recruit a second personality in the same manner?

I am assuming yes, but ask for formal clarification.

On a related note, if I recruit him from my discard pile in a legacy game using Will or At Any Cost would I recruit the second personality from my provence, or would I be able to recruit from the discard pile again?

Interrupt: After you Recruit Seiken, Recruit a non-Unique Samurai with lower Gold Cost, ignoring costs.

You may Recruit a second Personality even if it is not the Dynasty Phase, Seiken has no such requirement.

In the case of Recruiting him from any other place, that doesn't change that he tells you to just "Recruit ignoring costs", no other specification, so all the other normal conditions for Recruit would apply. The rulebook says: (Adv RB, pg 13)

Some actions tell you to “Recruit” or “Equip” a card. When this happens, pay the cost of the card entering play (indicated by the action’s own Gold cost), and apply all the effects of the Recruit or Equip player action

And those effects are: Bring into play a face-up Personality or Holding from your Province with Gold Cost equal to the amount you paid, paying 2 more Gold if the Personality has a Clan Alignment but does not have your Clan Alignment (Emphasis mine)
