Open Emotion + Come One at a Time

L5R CCG Rules board, 19 December 2013 to 20 December 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If I play Open Emotion, reveal Come One at a Time, and engage a battle with it, on my normal turn as a defender do I get to use the terrain duel again?

Yes, provided your opponent's Engage actions don't interfere with your defender's status during the Engage Segment of the battle and don't render him unable to do so once the Combat Segment begins (or Naval et al.)

A doubt arised in my local playgroup about this particular combination, and I want to make sure my inicial ruling is right, which was:

If these 2 cards are played, and Come One At a Time is played as an Engage, the aditional action cannot be taken, as it is a Battle action, and it is not legal to take those yet. Im basing my ruling on this: "The Combat Segment consists of two action rounds. In the first, only Engage actions and Reactions "After Engaging" may be taken (plus Reactions and Interrupts triggered by them). The Active player has the first opportunity to take such an action."

Is that correct?

No, according to the new text of Open Emotion, you use the ability as an Engage action. Card text beats the rules you're quoting.

It is obvious that playing the Terrain is legal by Open Emotion, but the Repeatable Battle action that exists while Come One At A Time is also turned into an Engage action when effected by Open Emotion? Because then I could Repeatable Engage kill duel everyone. Is that what I'm reading?

Ok, I see now what you were referring to.

This regrettably needs to be put Under Discussion. Stay tuned!

It's your lucky day, and I'm closing not one but *two* discussions!

It is the consensus of the Rules Team that you may take an additional Battle action during the Engage Segment if an effect direct you to do so. Card text beats the rules here, allowing you to play actions with a different designator that you would normally. So when you play Come One at a Time under Open Emotion's elayed effects, the action grants you an additional Battle action that you may take even though it is an Engage Segment.

That said, the ability's text is unaffected, it is still a Battle ability and therefore it cannot *normally* be taken as an action during the Engage Segment. You do so only because the Terrain's ability that puts it in play allows you to, you get one and only one duel as an "Engage". Once that opportunity is over, you must wait until the Combat Segment to take second or further uses of the Repeatable Battle abilities.
