A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

There are several cards with actions where the other player chooses multiple options. For example:
http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=6060,#hashid=833d2a01f083b98e93dc6d4777c57862,#cardcount=0
This has sparked many arguments in our playgroup as to. "I am going to choose to bow XYZ, oh well it's already bowed." What's the ruling on this? In normal life, I can't say something to the effect of: "I chose to have cereal for breakfast" but not have actually eaten cereal for breakfast.

Unless it involves putting a card into play, you may always choose to create an effect which you know will fail.
Otherwise you would not be able to, say, play Block Supply Lines on a Personality with a bowed Spell attached.
Note that a bowing effect failing because the card is already bowed is failure, but not negation, so the clause, "If the bowing or movement is negated, remove the Personality from the game" of Preserving Honor is not triggered.
