Reckless Duel vs Know No Fear

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 May 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I'm fairly new to the came, and this came up in one of my games. I was presented with a a Reckless Duel. I did not focus, and instead played Know No Fear. My opponent tried to deny me this use since it was past targeting. The way english normally reads, is that this reaction is to be taken anytime after my guy is targeted, but before the effects resolve. However, I have found in the online rules that "After targeting" is essentially "before anything else happens." (per: http://rules.l5r.com/EE_Timing)

Based on the wording of Reckless Duel, and Know No Fear. At what point do I actually have the opportunity to play Know No Fear against Reckless Duel? Can I even attempt to win the duel before I played Know No Fear? (This was not what happened in the particular example above, just curious.)

You have to play Know no Fear after he's targeted with the duel, which is before the duel begins. The duel procedure is part of the action's effects, and the normal sequence for playing an action is: a) Announce (Reckless duel) b) Choose his performer (His Personality) c) Choose mandatory targets (Your Personality) --->Know no Fear is played here d) Pay costs (0 gold in this case) e)Resolve effects --->The entire duel procedure comes here --->The loser is then bowed and moved home (Know no Fear would negate it, if the loser were your Samurai) f) action ends

It means that yes, you must play KnF before the duel itself is played, and before you know whether your Personality wins it or not. If you started focusing, it's too late for Know no Fear. However, nothing prevents you from playing Know no Fear and then trying to win the duel (or at least tie), and be HIS Personality who moves home and bows.
