Yurishi XP and Emerald Armor XP2

L5R CCG Rules board, 3 April 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A player has exactly 2 personalities at the same location: One is Goju Yurishi xp, the other is a personality with the Emerald Armor xp2 attached. Are both considered legal targets for his opponent's actions or neither?

I'm not comfortable with the ambiguity in this question. For what action would they be considered legal targets? The answer may vary depending on the action being considered. For example, A Stain Cleansed may target the Emerald Armor XP2 and solve the conundrum.

Assuming an action that may only target enemy Personalities at the current battlefield, eg Steel on Steel, since both Personalities are excluded leaving you with no legal targets, the choice restriction conflict is solved by both restrictions canceling each other.

See here: When effects restrict choice based on a condition that forces choice or checks for other legal choices, conflicts and paradoxes are resolved by removing all such conflicting restrictions. This applies to positive restrictions (example: "This card must be chosen as a target" - effectively saying that no other cards can be chosen if this card is a legal target) and negative restrictions (example: "This card may not be chosen as a target if there are other legal targets.")
