If I play Kitsuki Judgement on Kazutoshi XP2, can he negate the destruction?
Kitsuki Judgement and Bayushi Kazutoshi XP2
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
He will try to negate it (meaning: the trait will be triggered and considered used for that turn, just in case you try to bring him back or Feign his Death) because the seppuku caused by Kitsuki Judgment is a card effect, but the negation will fail because destruction from seppuku may not be negated.
Now it has already been mentioned that Kazutoshi's trait will attempt to negate his destruction due to Kitsuki Judgment and fail. However, the rest of his trait still attempts to apply as much as it can, correct? So if an (for instance) a dishonorable Kazutoshi is targeted with Judgment he:
1.) Is rehonored (can't be negated) 2.) Is destroyed (attempts to negate it, but can't) 3.) Is moved home (from his trait, does nothing as he is in the discard) 4.) Bows (from his trait, does nothing? I don't think cards in the discard can be bowed) 5.) Is dishonored (Also from his trait, but this actually goes through and changes his status from honorable to dishonorable dead)
So the end result would be a dishonorably dead Kazutoshi, correct?
Almost correct. Actually, the entire triggered trait should be fully resolved before Kazutoshi is destroyed. See Priority Once a triggered action or trait starts, apply all its costs, targeting, and effects in sequence before proceeding, even if another action or triggered trait is under way. (Emphasis mine, as usual)
The exact sequence would be something like this:
->Kitsuki Judgment rehonors Kazutoshi (if possible) ->Kitsuki Judgment tries to destroy Kazutoshi. -> This triggers Kazutoshi's trait. *-Kazutoshi's negation -> fails (This doesn't mean that he's destroyed at this point. It just means that he will still be destroyed when it's time to resume the destruction effect) *-Kazutoshi moves home (not in the discard pile yet, so the movement will happen) *-Kazutoshi bows (not in the discard pile yet, so he does bow) *-Kazutoshi is dishonored (not in the discard pile yet, so he does dishonor) -> Now other effects triggered "before the destruction", such as substitution effects, and then Reactions "before the destruction", can be played, if any. Assuming not: ->Kitsuki Judgment's destruction effect is successful and Kazutoshi is finally destroyed. *-Kazutoshi's last controller loses two honor (Kazutoshi's base PH, for dying dishonorably)
PS Poor Kazutoshi
