Steadfast Defense vs Hiruma Nikaru.

L5R CCG Rules board, 30 March 2013 to 31 March 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Nikaru reads, Battle: Target an enemy Personality: Bow him. He may not perform actions.

Steadfast Defense reads, Battle: Choose your performing Monk: Straighten him. If you control a Temple, you may target a Personality or Follower and bow or straighten it.

If I have a temple in play, may I use the second sentence of Steadfast to straighten the performing monk if he has previously been targeted by Nikaru?

Thanks for your time.

¿? I'm not sure I follow.

Nikaru says that the Personality may not perform actions. Therefore, this Personality can't be chosen as performer, an ongoing effect forbids you that choice. You must, however, choose a Monk as a performer in order to legally be able to announce the action (per the rule of Good Faith) Good Faith Rule: When an action is announced, the player must be able to choose all its explicit performers, target all required targets, meet all conditions of the action, and pay all mandatory costs, to the best of his or her knowledge.

He simply can't be the performing monk if he has been "paralyzed" by Nikaru. (You may, however, have another Monk perform the action, and then use the conditional effect to straighten the other Monk, who will still not be able to perform actions - but at least will contribute force to your army. The Nikarued guy can't do it on his own, he needs some help from a friend)
