Unaligned Clan Alignment and Truce

L5R CCG Rules board, 7 March 2013 to 8 March 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi Rules Team,

This is partly in reference to viewtopic.php?p=1344101#p1344101.

Per the above ruling's link, the rulebook states that Unaligned personalities "have no Clan Alignment". Does this prevent me from using Truce to pay for an Unaligned Personality? At first I thought this *would* prevent me because Unaligned personalities do not have a Clan Alignment. However, after searching "clan alignment unaligned" I found the following ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=86411&p=1141407&hilit=clan+alignment+unaligned#p1141407, which in turn links to another ruling. Though I understand that both rulings were made in the Celestial era, they both refer to the idea that Unaligned personalities and players "do not share a Clan alignment..." with others.

In light of both of this, I think the answer is actually "Yes, you can use Truce to pay for Unaligned Personalities" because if you don't share Clan Alignments, you by definition have different ones ("Nothing" is different than "Something", after all). However, I know that wordings have specific meanings in games and so I would like to ask the Rules Team's formal opinion on this.

Thank you!

Though I understand that both rulings were made in the Celestial era, they both refer to the idea that Unaligned personalities and players "do not share a Clan alignment..." with others.

The point here isn't the arc but rather - "X does not share a Clan Alignment with Y" isn't the same as "X has a different Clan Alignment than Y". Your Unaligned Personality doesn't share Clan Alignments with any others, since she doesn't have one to begin with... but that doesn't mean she has a different Clan Alignment than all other Personalities.

In light of both of this, I think the answer is actually "Yes, you can use Truce to pay for Unaligned Personalities" because if you don't share Clan Alignments, you by definition have different ones ("Nothing" is different than "Something", after all).

I don't share the logic in your answer. If I don't own a car, I can't say that I have a different car than you do, because I don't have a car for starters. If I have a job and you don't, you can't say that you have a different job than mine. It simply doesn't make sense. It's a different situation (one has a Clan Alignment, the other hasn't, certainly it's not the same thing) but not a "different Clan Alignment", so Unaligned Personalities don't have the benefit of Truce.
