A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I know it's an old post, but a game just came up and I'm being told I have to still focus because of Doji Kazuo - exp's trait and I'm seriously having trouble wrapping my head around this.
By this ruling, am I to believe that a battle duel will still take place even if Yurishi isn't there? Since he is triggered by being targeted and is home before the duel starts?
Or does the duel just fail since his dueling partner isn't there anymore?
It is very dumb if I still have to focus if I don't even have a guy there dueling.

Dial it back a bit on the "this ruling is dumb" stuff, please. This isn't the L5R Facebook group.

The duel is not an effect *on* Goju Yurishi, so it is not negated by his Reaction. However, the duel may create effects, such as "Destroy the duel's loser," which - if Yurishi is the loser - will be an effect on him.
See Effects "on" a card.
