Grief and dying from 0 Chi

L5R CCG Rules board, 2 March 2013 to 3 March 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi there,

This has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find it so I am sorry for asking again: Does dying from 0 Chi (from and action, such as Frozen in Place) count as dying from an action (to be able to react with Grief) or is it something that is done by the rules and not by the action itself?

Thanks a lot!

Chi Death Rule can be found here: The source of Chi death is the card whose costs or effects caused it, or the rulebook if it was not directly caused by a card's costs or effects (for example, if a base 2C Personality with a +1C Weapon and a -2C token loses the Weapon). Note also that the source of the effects of tokens can usually be traced back to a card's effects. (emphasis mine)

Most often (not always) this means that the source is the last card effect that gave a chi penalty to the Personality. In your example, the destruction would come from Frozen in Place's effects (ie, an action's effects).
