In regards to the CCG, I couldn't find anything within the comp rules when looking myself, I wondered if there were any specific rules that defined a Family Name, or covered the usage of the term "Family Name" on any cards. Just wondered if "Family Name" is a specific concept within the CCG.
Family names
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
As of February 4th, the only text I have been able to find relating to Family Names is this Legacy rule: "Titles and Family Names The majority of Personality cards have Family Names. A comprehensive list of Family Names is coming soon....
It's not much, huh? The concept exists but it would seem that there hasn't been yet a need to define it, or to use it within the CCG. Of course, should this be needed for any new card, the rules will be expanded as soon as possible.
Regarding this thread, here is a list.

Am I right in saying that the list currently is specific to Legacy, and therefore not relevant rules for "Standard" (EE) play?

Yes. An EE list should arrive soon, I beg you some patience, please. The Torn Asunder rulesheet will also provide more information on the matter.

The definitive list of Family Names for Emperor Edition is here.
Following up on this thread.
I do not believe there is any effect in EE that cares about what Clan a given Family Name "belongs" to (so the organization of the Family Name list by Clan is, at the moment, merely a matter of presentation). However, there are a few EE Personalities with a recognized Family Name that does not appear in their Clan's list:
Two Clan-aligned Personalities: Chuda Kiuchi, who is the only EE legal Spider Chuda.Taishuu, whose "Experienced Mirumoto Taishuu" keyword provides the card with an alternate title that "counts in all ways as a second title for the card", making him a Spider Mirumoto. And some monks, all of whom have Family Names due to alternate titles. Itoku, who is an Unaligned Akodo.Makito, who is an Unaligned Asako.Rokku, who is also an Unaligned Akodo.Tokiko, who is an Unaligned Isawa. Are these cards considered to have their appropriate Family Names despite said names being "out of Clan"?
Just in regards to this thread: (also random thanks to the rules team for all their volunteered hard work! )
While the comp rules has a list of Family names, should it not also state exactly when something is considered a family name? This could I guess be related to Qalyar's question, but is it merely if one of those words appears in the card's title? - and if so is that actually clarified anywhere in the EE comp rules as it was in the Legacy rules?
Thanks, much love, please don't hate me if I've missed it somewhere else in the comp rules!

The Torn Asunder rulesheet will provide detailed rules on what is considered a Family Name. In the following weeks, the wiki will have a glossary definition of the concept and what does count as a card's family name and what not. (Yes, Qalyar's question is related to this issue) It will be eventually clarified in the EE comprehensive rules in the following weeks, do not worry.
