Is a stronghold considered a "card" for CGHXp

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 November 2024 04:04 · in reply

Yes. As of the Ruleset contemporary to CGH, Strongholds are cards.

A player, 3 November 2024 10:16 · in reply

Just one more thing about that card... Can his Reaction be used more than once per turn if you play different Personalities in that turn or is it only once per turn at all ?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 November 2024 10:17

Reactions as any other action, are once-per-turn since Lotus - so no. Pre Lotus Reactions are mostly any-times-per-turn. For Legacy just check Oracle to be sure.

What section on here tells me how to install the program to play games I'm not the best computer person

A player, 3 November 2024 23:15

Found it

A player, 4 November 2024 03:32

Ok... can we get some timing here? My opponent was saying that the dark ring is played, and then waits until the discard step of the action sequence before it hits the discard pile. I argued that because it requires that I discard it to do the action, it hits the discard pile before the "discard step" of the action sequence.

The order of operations in question was... I Dark Ring of Air a target, False Shikei has a trait that straightens him when a ring is discarded, and the Tao of Kokujin as a response can bow someone after the ring was discarded if it was a dark ring... my argument was that dark ring gets discarded, false shikei straightens, I then have an opportunity in the response step to bow him.

My opponent said no, because the ring is discarded during the "discard step" of the action sequence, so before the response step takes place.

[attachment: image.png] [attachment: image.png] [attachment: image.png]
A player, 4 November 2024 04:04

Edit: so this is easier than I was making it out to be. Long story short, Responces happen after effect. Shikei is straight before the Response step.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 November 2024 04:04

Whether your opponent was right or wrong (they were wrong, for the record, though), the Response comes after Shikei would straighten regardless, so it could then bow him.

A player, 4 November 2024 04:06

But he needs to understand why... I tried explaining it, but apparently I wasn't doing a good job.

Anybody out there have a good way of explaining the timing?

A player, 4 November 2024 04:06

Strategies get discarded during step F of the action sequence. The Ring explicitly discards itself as part of the resolution of the action, step E. the window to announce reactions was inserted after E, so its technically E.5

A player, 4 November 2024 04:07

It would be much cleaner however, if the Discarding could be included in the Cost somehow

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 November 2024 04:08 · in reply

Oh, are Responses after E before F? My mistake then. I thought they were after everything, including discard. Well, then it does matter that the opponent was wrong, sequentially speaking.

A player, 4 November 2024 04:09 · in reply

Yes "response" step is between E and F

A player, 4 November 2024 04:10

The problem I was having was explaining that the action itself was discarding the card, not the "discard step"

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 November 2024 04:10

Gotcha. Sorry I was initially partially incorrect in what I said.

A player, 4 November 2024 04:10

I just couldnt explain it in a way that made sense I guess.

A player, 4 November 2024 04:11 · in reply

no apology needed. its always good to cite my source- im not nearly as renowned for rules as you are

A player, 4 November 2024 04:12

But yeah, the card itself explicitly says discard it or bow it. Strategies played from hand usually don't say that, so step F is needed for them. If they did say that, they would be discarded in step E

A player, 4 November 2024 04:13

Yeah I tried explaining that the discard step was mostly for strategies, but he was insistant

A player, 4 November 2024 04:13

and I am not a good teacher for some people

A player, 4 November 2024 04:13

its similar logic to an effect saying "bow this personality" in the effect, instead of having the bow symbol as a cost. It would move the bowing of the personality from step B (cost) to step E (effect).

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 November 2024 04:13

I answered him in Onyx Rules channel. Hopefully that settles it.

A player, 4 November 2024 04:15

also, side note, I was today years old when I realized most of the framework is an easy acryonm. Announce Buy or bow Choose targets D (gotta work interrupt here somehow) Effect Finish by discarding.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 November 2024 04:15

D = Don't resolve that just yet, I have an Interrupt! 😉

pretty sure you just cant copy political abilities on personalities that happen to copy other abilities

A player, 4 November 2024 17:40

like your Kitiaru couldnt copy your opponent's Kitiaru ability

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 November 2024 17:41 · in reply

Kitiaru can copy a Political ability on any Personality in play (as long as that ability doesn't also copy abilities). So, if your opponent has a copy of Kitiaru, yours couldn't copy his ability (as was said above as I typed this 😛 ). But there are plenty of other positive examples. Like, Kitiaru could copy Agasha Kodo's ability (if Kodo is on play, on your or the opponent's side) to straighten a Holding; then Kitiaru could straighten a Holding as your next action after copying it.

A player, 4 November 2024 17:44 · in reply

Okey, so i need two action, one! Copy abilitie, second! Use copied ability

A player, 4 November 2024 20:26

Here is a question I feel like I know the answer to, but I'm absolutely not confident in my answer. If have some character in play - Doji Tim (not unique) - and I have Doji Tim XP (unique) and Doji Tim XP2 (unique) in my provinces, I'm not required to overlay, correct? I could, in theory, simply pay the gold cost for the XP and XP2 version and bring them into play?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 November 2024 20:28 · in reply

Overlay is indeed not mandatory, so yes you can buy either normally.

But one flaw with your example; you can't have Doji Tim Unique E1 and Doji Tim Unique E2 in play at the same time. So, you could pay and put into play normally one of those without overlaying, or you could overlay one, your choice; but you couldn't bring both into play at once by either method.

A player, 4 November 2024 20:32

Right. Unique applies to the name of the card and it checks against the name. I could, in theory, have a non unique Doji Tim wandering around and then either overlay it with E1 and pay the cost for E2 having an E1 and E2 in play, or leave the standard version out, pay for the E1 and then at some point overlay the E2 over the E1?

A player, 4 November 2024 20:32

(My instincts were, indeed, wrong)

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 November 2024 20:34 · in reply

Seems mostly correct, though I'm not sure we're fully on the same page. What do you mean by "overlay it with E1 and pay the cost for E2"? Sounds like both E1 and E2 in play at once, which is still a no-no.

A player, 4 November 2024 20:34

Yep, defaulted to the no-no. Man I'm rusty.

A player, 4 November 2024 20:34

I can have any number of a non-unique personality in play, but only one unique copy, regardless of what level of experience.

Next question, if naval personality get no-naval attachment, did he loose naval? Its like cavalry?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 November 2024 22:29 · in reply

No. The Naval Rulebook ability doesn't depend on the entire unit being Naval like Cavalry one does. Also, it's only Followers that determine that, not all attachments.

A player, 4 November 2024 22:30 · in reply
kempy_nezumi (not official), 4 November 2024 22:37

Anyway as you have Role you should be more specific what format/edition you are asking for. Eg Naval Invasion has different requirements and effects in Emperor and in 20F (so also in other alternate Formats like OBH Legacy or Modern).

kempy_nezumi (not official), 4 November 2024 22:39

In Emperor Naval must be performed by Naval Personality (so no Naval from Follower unless its ability is also performed by its Personality) while in 20F you may play any action from card in Naval Personality unit.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 November 2024 22:41

But as already said above, even in Emperor Edition Rules, there's still no requirement that the Personality's entire unit be Naval; only that you are Attacker and that you have more Naval cards in your army than the Defending army.

A player, 4 November 2024 22:45

Yes, you right, i will be more specific

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 8 November 2024 01:08 · in reply

Yes. Reactions are not bound by the Rules of Presence and Location, and the Rule prohibiting targeting your own bowed cards was already long gone.

Correct. Michio, also from Words and Deeds, didn't have it in his initial printing either. Kensai wasn't even a thing until TotE&JC, 2 sets into Samurai, and it didn't evolve into a Spider theme until later still.

Hello! When a non-tactician is granted tactician via Kenson Gakka, or Aranai sensei, are they able to gain force bonuses through White Shore Plain or Coordinated Assault?

A player, 11 November 2024 20:16

Thank you!

kempy_nezumi (not official), 11 November 2024 20:19

Both ability gained by White Shore Plain and Coordinated Assault are Tactical abilities, so no, they don;t gain bonuses from those actions if you play GK.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 11 November 2024 20:20 · in reply

No, for the reasons Kempy said above. EDIT: Nevermind; KG Oracle text is fine. My ability to read text on my phone is what's lacking.

A player, 11 November 2024 20:20

Isnt Aranai different though?

A player, 11 November 2024 20:21

Hmm probably should look at that yeah. Because Akodo Sensei did give the force, and kenson gakka was kind of the spiritual successor of Akodo Sensei

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 11 November 2024 20:21 · in reply

Somehow I overlooked Aranai when answering.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 11 November 2024 20:24

Aranai is indeed different than Akodo Sensei and Kenson Gakka. Aranai Sensei only prevents them gaining the Tactical Advantage Rulebook ability, nothing more.

Assuming the ability is not Tireless, no you can't; at least, not as the additional action. You can Legacy a bowed guy, forego the additional, straighten him, and then use the ability a second time.

A player, 12 November 2024 23:42

hey, so its Stupid Question Hour.

Could you, if you really wanted to, use Reprisal to declare an attack against yourself?

A player, 12 November 2024 23:46

Or, follow up question if it works as how I think it works, if you attack, play reprisal to make them attack you immediately? assuming that you have ways to force participation (defeated, House of Suikihime, etc)

A player, 12 November 2024 23:51

I ask mostly because the card says you declare the attack against the current attacker. Comprehensive says that the person declaring the attack is the attacker and the other player is the defender.

One rule has to bend to the card, common sense would suggest the opponent gets to be the one declaring the attack off your card, but that is not actually how its worded....

A player, 13 November 2024 00:00

I'm pretty sure the rules prevent you from ever attacking yourself, but Reprisal is also worded that this series of events couldn't happen

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 November 2024 00:00

I can tell you from the 20F printing none of that works (as Techno just also said). Could you show me the Onyx to confirm?

A player, 13 November 2024 00:02

This is the one that my data base is pulling up. I see an older version which would explicitly prevent it, but this one does not

A player, 13 November 2024 00:03

let me look in the online folder to verify

A player, 13 November 2024 00:04

verified- the one i posted is the one from the offical images

A player, 13 November 2024 00:06

Now, this one, from an older iteration of Onyx, would explicitly prevent it-

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 November 2024 00:08

Yeah, I see some of the explicitly preventative clauses were dropped possibly accidentally from that later version, so I'd have to check the CR for explicit preventatives which I can't right now, but sensically, you cannot declare an attack against yourself.

A player, 13 November 2024 00:08

Right. But since Cards overwrite Rules, sensically would it cause your opponent to gain an attack on you? That you can force participation in?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 November 2024 00:09 · in reply

No. Declaring an attack makes you the Attacker.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 November 2024 00:10

The active "declare" verb implicitly only refers to you the action taker.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 November 2024 00:11

So, that part is immutable.

A player, 13 November 2024 00:13

Okay, so what i'm getting is that if I have an attacking opposed personality with 2 attachments and I play this card, I get +3F and when combat ends, since that is not a "may" the card creates an impossible gamestate

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 November 2024 00:14

So, the declaration fails. If an effect tries to do something that can't be done, it fails.

A player, 13 November 2024 00:17

Shame, but understandable. That said, it sounds like it goes so far as to make the new phase before fizzling, which means its another -1 on House of High Waters. If you ever wanted a super niche use of a card lol

A player, 13 November 2024 00:18

More importantly I can't use it to break my own province, which makes me sad.

A player, 13 November 2024 00:32 · in reply

It's allowed to activate something that cannot legally resolve?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 November 2024 00:34 · in reply

Yes. It's a cardinal cornerstone of L5R that you can do things you know will partially/fully fail.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 November 2024 00:36

Like, if you target a guy with the "cannot move" trait with an action that gives him +2F and moves him home, he'll get the Force and stay right there.

Can you Master of Puppets to redirect the initial sacrifice to Overwhelmed to your opponent and then also make them suffer the effect normally?

Answers on: Master of Puppets
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 November 2024 02:04 · in reply

No. Master of Puppet's extra "as if" clause lets you bounce an opponent's action to one of his own cards that could be a target if it was your action, like a Ranged Attack. It cannot let you bounce your own action targeting your own card to one of his.

I will grant you MoP does appear to be missing the word "legal" between "different" and "Shadowlands", but it is implicit insofar as the entire rest of the clause about the action being allowed to target an otherwise non-legal target would be pointless.

A player, 14 November 2024 02:06

Ill grant you that i failed to consider that your opponent can't meet the requirement of being the highest force you control, but otherwise I don't see a reason it can't bounce one of your actions over, say a "bow your target shugenja to x"

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 November 2024 02:08 · in reply

Because it can only bounce actions otherwise non-legal targets to "as if you were taking them". If you're already the person taking the action, it can't do that.

Yep. Technically, nothing prevents that.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 November 2024 02:42

They would have to be at the current battlefield, not any location, to legally also be the second target, though, of course.

A player, 14 November 2024 03:26

If I have multiple units at the battlefield, and the highest force one is bowed, can I overwhelm with my unbowed person because they have the highest force of all my current unbowed personalities, or is this saying of all personalities period?

A player, 14 November 2024 03:28

example from game: he has a 5 force bowed personality, a 4 force and a 2 force unbowed personalites.

A player, 14 November 2024 03:28

an attempt was made to sacrifice the 4 force, is that legal?

A player, 14 November 2024 03:29

It checks the force of your highest unbowed Personality, not the highest force of any of your Personalities. Bowed Personalities are basically ignored for checking who you destroy to play this

A player, 14 November 2024 03:30

In Jim's example, the 4F guy gets sacked

A player, 14 November 2024 03:30

it explicitly says all of all personalities, not all unbowed

A player, 14 November 2024 03:35

It checks all in case you have multiple unbowed Personalities. The requirement will still only allow the sacking of your unbowed Personality

A player, 14 November 2024 03:35

So you can't sac the 2F guy cause the 4F guy is bigger, nor the 5F guy cause he's bowed

A player, 14 November 2024 03:41

I think we’ll need to check with @Brook Cunningham on this one. My understanding is that it checks all your personalities for force but can only go off if the highest is unbowed

A player, 14 November 2024 03:44

Note that the destruction clause at the end has the same wording and does check and kill bowed personalities

the thing is that Over don't target, the opposing player does the targeting

Currently I can only think of 2 cards in the game that can currently negate it.

The delayed targeting and the fact that overwhelmed makes your opponent target his own personalities are what complicate the card. So here’s a question for @Brook Cunningham ; would Break Ranks (pictured above) negate Overwhelmed? I’m thinking no since, at the ‘play interrupts’ timing window, Overwhelmed hasn’t targeted my opponent’s personality yet. If, on the other hand, Break Ranks creates a ‘floating effect’ then it would negate Overwhelmed once the targeting occurs.

Answers on: Break Ranks
A player, 14 November 2024 18:22

I guess that comes down to how long interrupts persis. Presumably the entire action, it is responding to?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 November 2024 18:25 · in reply

No, Break Ranks does what it does when you play it; it doesn't float around waiting.

A player, 14 November 2024 18:28

So Overwhelmed forcing your opponent to pick is why it won't work?

A player, 14 November 2024 18:35

The core issue is the same reason why most (modern) negates don't work on it- the Interrupt window is before the victim is targeted.

Updated to reflect post Ivory. I can't speak to Reaction timings

A player, 14 November 2024 18:36 · in reply

Not in this case. You play interrupts after mandatory targets are chosen but before effects resolve. The only mandatory target is the highest force personality of the person playing Overwhelmed. The other targets are chosen later at which point you can no longer play interrupts

A player, 15 November 2024 00:07

If I use 2 seperate nitoshi's gift second actions on the same target, do they have to destroy 2 cards?

A player, 15 November 2024 00:09

Yes. Each gift creates a separate floating effect.

A player, 15 November 2024 00:32

Hi, Togashi's Daisho counts as a ring for actions. Does this mean Tsushima and Shikei xp2 can put it into play, and would this be without gold cost or with gold cost?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 November 2024 00:47 · in reply

Yes, they can, and it would go straight to the discard pile:

CR, pg 102, "Attachments may only enter play by being attached to a Personality, are discarded if in play and not attached to a Personality"

Not sure if you'd have to pay for that or not, but is it really relevant given the answer above? 😛

A player, 15 November 2024 00:53 · in reply

Oh I see, so attachments cannot be attached by effects that put them into play unless there is a specific card effect saying they can be attached... I get it now

A player, 15 November 2024 03:44

So... if I bow this during my opponents turn and target my guy, and then my turn happens, when does the gifting of the tokens happen vs. when do I choose to unbow it?

A player, 15 November 2024 03:46

like... can I just use it on each of my opponent's turns to keep them from targeting my guy and then get a token and unbow it?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 November 2024 03:47 · in reply

Unbowing happens simultaneous with start of turn, but the token happens "after" your turn begins. So, nope.

A player, 15 November 2024 03:48

A little wonky if we don't have an unbow step

A player, 15 November 2024 03:51

Hmmmm... it seems "start of turn" is outside of the action phase, which is where you unbow and the flip provinces.

A player, 15 November 2024 03:52

if I am looking at page 50 and 51 right.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 November 2024 03:54

Yeah, I'm not the hugest fan of the loss of the Straighten and Events phases, but once the turn starts, you're in the Action Phase. Unbowing happens "at" the start, then anything that happens "after" happens after, but it's all Action Phase.

A player, 15 November 2024 03:55

This says when a player's turn ends, the other player's turn begins... so that's the first step, turn start... then my turn sequence is action phase, attack phase, dynasty phase

A player, 15 November 2024 03:56

so... I'd argue that "start of turn" is pre-action phase based on the rulebook.

A player, 15 November 2024 03:56

But... that's what a "straighten and upkeep" phase fixes lol

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 November 2024 03:58

Well, "start of turn" isn't a null field nor its own phase. It's a singular point in time, but your turn starts with the action phase, so their manifest existence is also simultaneous, not sequential.

A player, 15 November 2024 04:01

I don't see that designation in the rulebook, but maybe I should request a streamline of a turn order on the onyx lives discord?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 November 2024 04:03

I mean, it's just logic, really. The start of one's turn used to begin with the straighten phase and end with the end phase. Now, the turn is only bookended by Action and Dynasty. Thus, turn starts in Action and ends in Dynasty.

A player, 15 November 2024 04:04

In a competitive card game, assumptions based on logic mean nothing lol. We need hard rulings and defined timing! lol

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 November 2024 04:10

I mean, it's not assumptive, it's just an extrapolation. Your turn starts with the Action Phase. Thus, the Action Phase starting and your turn starting are the same thing, with the same timing.

A player, 15 November 2024 04:11

It doesn't define that.

A player, 15 November 2024 04:11

You are assuming it because it doesn't define it.

A player, 15 November 2024 04:14

Either way, I trust you are right, I just think defining it would improve overall experience.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 November 2024 04:14

If it helps, consider this analogy:

A turn is a period of time, and it is comprised of three parts; Action, Attack, and Dynasty. Likewise, a decade is a period of time, comprised of ten parts; year XXX0 - XXX9. So, are the start of the decade known as the 80s and the start of 1980 different things? No. Can that question be answered with the given information, without additionally explicitly stating that they are not the same thing? I would say so.

A player, 16 November 2024 15:07

Thats a fine analogy, but doesn't change the fact that the rules need turn order defined. Lol

I'm no expert on L5R rules, but it reads to me as if you only get to draw the card if you perform a Battle/Open equip action.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 16 November 2024 17:56 · in reply

The way I read it, HoW says, "Until the game ends, [verb phrase] is [modified in this way] and, after the first time each turn you do [verb phrase], draw a card."

So, it would trigger the first time each turn you Equip a Follower or Item from your hand with a printed GC of 1 to 4, regardless of how you did it.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 16 November 2024 18:21

But Supply Outpost attach is not Equip so it doesnt trigger? But Secluded Outpost does as it just says Equip?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 16 November 2024 18:23

Or Emperor era "equipping" translates into any effect that Equip in later editions?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 16 November 2024 18:23

And also works for earlier editions "attach"?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 16 November 2024 18:24 · in reply

I mean, that's the problems with mixing cards from different Rulesets. 😛 I suppose I should probably Oracle Supply Outpost to say "Equip"; it clearly hasn't had an Ivory coat of paint on it, since it has a colon as part of its tiggered trait.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 16 November 2024 18:26

Pretty much any attaching effect where you also have to pay would be defined as "equipping" by Ivory+ Rules, I'd say off the top of my head, without looking into it too closely.

A player, 19 November 2024 23:49

This says "after" does this mean it gets a token from its own ability, or because it has already targeted it can't ping it?

Question on Shadow Dragon XP. Oracle says it "unaligned", but none of the prints show the trait. Any idea if and when it got an erratum?

Answers on: Shadow Dragon
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 21 November 2024 15:56 · in reply

As of SE, general Rules made everything without a Clan Alignment "Unaligned" by definition. The Oracle is oriented from that perspective, as well as from the perspective that Ninja is not a Clan Alignment in Lotus. By strict Lotus Rules, it isn't Unaligned, due to lacking the printed keyword.

A player, 21 November 2024 17:14

Thanks a lot! so neither CoR nor T8G did reduce it's GC under DE/LE rules

Shugenja. "Unaligned Nonhuman" are both adjectives modifying the noun "Shugenja", not separate.

Modern ruleset:

Can I refuse [Test of the Emerald champion]?

i.e= Enemy resolves [Test] and targets his "champion", can the player being targeted (the challenged) simply not target a person to duel, to result in the 0/0 effect?

card and oracle say "...you may..." / "...who may..."

kempy_nezumi (not official), 24 November 2024 10:29

You can't refuse challenge, but you can just skip "target" part so duel won't happen.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 24 November 2024 11:13 · in reply

@kempy_nezumi 's answer is correct, but that won't result in a "0/0" effect as you say. The "champion" Personality will still have "lost no duels created by this Event" because none occurred, so they will get RFGd and their player will gain a Province.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 24 November 2024 11:22

To elaborate, the SE, unfortunately MRP, wording is at worst wrong and at best unclear, seemingly implying that the duels have to occur for the RFG and Province gain to take place, but this is not the case. So I Oracled it closest in wording to the MRP-1 from Lotus, with "if any" and "lost no duels", which admittedly is a bit murky itself and probably led to the poor SE "translation", but works as intended (and as it historically always has done; see the even-clearer earlier printings), per my ruling above.

Hello guys one quesiton. Does anybody knows if this starter includes the Mempo? it has the same sign as the celestial 15 startes , but I dont know if this one also includes mempo or not?

A player, 25 November 2024 23:53

I don't believe that starter would have the clan specific item. it would have Mirumoto Kenzo and their stronghold for that set.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 25 November 2024 23:55 · in reply

The Mempos only come in CE15 Base Set starters, so they would be labeled "Celestial Edition" (as opposed to any individual expansion, like EaW up there) with the 15 anniversary logo.

A player, 26 November 2024 00:06

That box is from Empire at War. The Mempos were only in the base CE15 starter boxes. They were an extra carrot to encourage existing players to buy a second copy of the starter box that they otherwise wouldn't really need.

(The Mempos weren't actually very good for the most part anyway)
