Can you use Somber Assurance to react to Mountain of the Phoenix's destruction of a personality to bring one into play?

A player, 1 February 2024 15:01

To answer my own question i guess, MotP has already resolved by the end of the battle so the answer would be no I think.

A player, 1 February 2024 15:26

more importantly, the answer would be no because Somber Assurance procs off of an action that destroys a Personality, whereas the destruction on MotP is the result of the trait on the terrain

A player, 2 February 2024 03:12

In Onyx Edition, can you use the Battle abilities of Fortifications in any battle? Or only in the one they're attached to?

Answers on: Fortifications
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 2 February 2024 03:13 · in reply

Same as 20F. Only where they're at.

A player, 2 February 2024 03:13

okay, thanks!

A player, 3 February 2024 02:12

Hi fellas, I have a question with regards to Clan War (CW) format deck construction. Here in Philippines we are having a hard time to trace on when the 40/40 CW format started if there was, coz as I recalled it, its still 30/30 format in the late 90s (Year 1997-99). I stopped playing CCG after DJH expansion so I'm not aware of the changes aside from the card backs. By the time I returned it was in Gold Edition i think that format is already at 40/40 (correct me if I'm wrong).

A player, 3 February 2024 02:34

I could be wrong but we were talking about this a bit ago and i believe someone said right after SCC1

A player, 3 February 2024 02:35

play 40/40 like god intended tho

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 February 2024 02:37 · in reply

Yeah, I think Kempy said that the Tournament format changed to 40/40 after Time of the Void, even though it was listed as 30/30 in the Jade+ Rulebooks. He even posted a thing from the Imperial Herald where it was voted on. I myself didn't get serious in the Tournament scene or the game itself until at/after TotV myself, and I pretty much never built a 30/30 deck.

A player, 3 February 2024 02:48

That is correct

A player, 3 February 2024 02:49

Tournament rules specified 40/40, though the rule book didn't

kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 February 2024 14:34

Vote was in IH #8 (1997)

A player, 3 February 2024 14:44

Thanks for this wonderful info. So it was suggested in 1997, so how the vote ended?

A player, 3 February 2024 14:47

Well we are aren't playing 30/30 now...

A player, 3 February 2024 14:48 · in reply

Yeah, and that made me a bit confused. But way back if I recall we still played in 30/30 format in tournaments (1997-98), but several players opt to have over 30 per deck

A player, 3 February 2024 14:50 · in reply

Same here, which I prefer since we're all used to 40/40 long before already.

A player, 3 February 2024 14:51

I just asked coz I'm not aware on when the 40/40 format really started

kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 February 2024 14:51

'97 gencon was 30/30

A player, 3 February 2024 14:53

So IH#8 was issued after Gencon?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 February 2024 14:56

don't know on page i put above there's a deadline for voting 15 march

A player, 3 February 2024 15:00

I find it interesting coz as mentioned earlier in rulebooks like in SCCs and HEs it's still 30/30. I wonder how the vote ended?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 February 2024 15:01

30/30 is even in 2000 rulebooks

kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 February 2024 15:01

eg in Soul of the Empire (6/2000)

kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 February 2024 15:02

but eg in 1 oct 1999 DCI Floor Rules there's restriction of 40/40 deck in tournament play

A player, 3 February 2024 15:05

Which would have been right after that vote

A player, 3 February 2024 15:06

I was running 4 tournaments a week at different stores during that time

A player, 3 February 2024 15:06 · in reply

I see, it's implemented already. What's good is that it's documented. Great job on keeping that.

A player, 3 February 2024 15:08

I can say is that regardless of the outcome of the vote we've implemented the 40/40 format

A player, 3 February 2024 15:08

I think it might have been at TO discretion at first.... But almost everyone went with it

A player, 3 February 2024 15:10

Simply put we've all practiced it before, until such time it became official and the 40/40 format in decks started perhaps in Gold Ed?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 February 2024 15:41 · in reply

Right. Gold Edition standardized 40/40 in the Rulebook itself, though anyone who had been playing at even local level tournaments from Jade onwards was already accustomed to building at that size. Likewise, the rule that Events could only resolve once per game per title was an "optional" Rule in Clan War through end of Jade Rulebooks, but all official tournaments, even pre 1997, used that Rule. And it too was codified as official in the GE Rulebook.

A player, 3 February 2024 15:49

Great guys! I feel enlightened and learned some history on this. Although I started playing L5R in 1996, I didn't play continuously. Seems like you guys played since L5R started. Anyways, thanks for providing great info.

A player, 3 February 2024 22:13

So other than having played a 12th black scroll, is there any way to actually kill this guy?

A player, 3 February 2024 22:22

And if he's RFG'D that won't trigger his "lose the game" right?

saaam (not official), 3 February 2024 22:23

Yes, because it's a trait, and not a Reaction.

A player, 3 February 2024 22:23

Perfect. That's what I thought.

saaam (not official), 3 February 2024 22:23

Sounds like it, since he's removed from play not destroyed.

saaam (not official), 3 February 2024 22:26

L5R has very, very few ways to remove someone or something from the game, instead of destroy.

saaam (not official), 3 February 2024 22:26

Hrm. Force of Will would be interesting.

saaam (not official), 3 February 2024 22:27

Because the change is until the end of the turn and survives card destruction.

A player, 4 February 2024 03:17

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2024 03:17

Heh. Not sure anyone ever Ruled on Chi Death because of the not-really-legal nature of the KYD cards.

Probably not. But we might run into it.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2024 03:19

I'm pretty sure continuous destruction from Chi Death will overcome any death-substitution effects, but I haven't the wherewithall to look that up in past Rulings or the current CR at the moment to verify. 😛

Onyx question: can the action on The Eternal Well of the Akasha target cards with no battle actions? The first part of targeting appears to only specify 'naga in your discard pile'. Naturally the copy part would fail since there's no battle action but the cycle the first target to the bottom of your deck should work provided that declaring the action is legal.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2024 04:27 · in reply

Yep. All correct.

A player, 4 February 2024 05:42 · in reply

if you kill Hantei XXXIX in the limited phase, he can't move home, so he's destroyed, right?

Also, does removing him from the game trigger his "You lose the game" text?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2024 05:55 · in reply

1. No. The movement home just fails because he's already there, but the destruction doesn't reassert.

2. No. Only destruction, which is not the same thing as RFTG/banishing.

A player, 4 February 2024 05:56

if you had a card with the text, "destroy target personality, this will not be negated", would that be enough to destroy him?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2024 05:57 · in reply

No. Negation is not the same thing as substitution. His trait substitutes bowing and moving home for destruction.

A player, 5 February 2024 15:27

Just want to clarify, honored sensei produces +1 gold but only when producing extra gold for a personality without your clan alignment.

Lets say you have 3 in play, and you go to buy kitsune beiko.

you produce 9 gold to buy beiko, that extra gold can't be used to pay the interrupt right?

Also, once you pay for her, you have 6 extra gold floating, does it just vanish because it came from the honored sensei? Or does only 2 of it vanish from the honored sensei?

A player, 5 February 2024 15:36

The extra gold only "appears" for the Recruit action. Mechanically, you can also think of it as "reduces the Recruit cost by 1"

A player, 5 February 2024 15:36

At least, usually (can't look at the specific card right now)

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:37

That's not entirely correct.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:37

Also, I'm trying to look up Beiko myself. 😛

A player, 5 February 2024 15:40

If the holding states "when paying for a single X" where X is a card type, then the extra gold disappears after the recruitment. If the hold states "when paying for X" the gold stays, I think.

If Honored Sensei is the former, it can't be used for the Interrupt on Beiko Exp

A player, 5 February 2024 15:43

Yeah, reading that, the +1 should fade after the Recruit action

A player, 5 February 2024 15:43

TBS = the blackest storm, right?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:43 · in reply

So, you can't produce 9 Gold for Beiko and have any of the Gold go to any other cost whatsoever. The +1GP only happens when the Holding pays for Beiko and only Beiko, like other such Holdings, "Bamboo Irrigation" and "Colonial Temple". So, you could make 9 Gold for her pointlessly which could go to overpaying for her and no other payments, or you could use 1 Honored Sensei to pay her full 3, and put your other Honored Sensei to other uses for their 2G each.

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:43

the real question would be, is the Interrupt a separate Recruit action for which Honored Sensei can be used at +1 Gold? @Brook Cunningham

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:44 · in reply

It is a separate action, not part of "paying for" Beiko.

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:44

right, but is it a Recruit action for which you are "paying for" the bear?

A player, 5 February 2024 15:44

Its an interrupt

A player, 5 February 2024 15:45

I see now. Could you spend 3 on Beiko, then use the Honored Sensei for the Interrupt and gain the bonuses?

A player, 5 February 2024 15:46

Right, forgot that condition in the excitement

A player, 5 February 2024 15:46

I was just trying to see if I bow all 3, those extra golds pay for beiko, then I have 6 gold floating, I didn't know if that 6 gold could be used for the interrupt since it's the basic gold being produced by the holding and not the extra gold

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:47

But now you know you have either 4G from the extra 2 Holdings or nothing. 🙂

A player, 5 February 2024 15:47

Actually... lemme cook

A player, 5 February 2024 15:48 · in reply

lol

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:48 · in reply

so the Honored Sensei doesn't produce 1G "floating" for the conditional, it either produces 2G unconditional, or 3G as a conditional block

A player, 5 February 2024 15:49

Each Honored Sensei would produce 2+1 gold for Beiko. If using 3, could you specify spending only the 3x +1 bonus? Nevermind, doc already answered why

Answers on: Honored Sensei
Jeff Williamson (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:49

you need to use the 3G for the specified condition or lose it

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:49 · in reply

Ah, true. So you either have 4G extra (an 1 Honor, for using 1 of the Holdings for her), or no extra Gold and 3 total honor.

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 5 February 2024 15:58 · in reply

the problem with Invest cost creation of Kitsune Kritters is that it permanently increased the cost of an otherwise cheap shugenja (making them ironically more resilient) while leaving a 0GC fragile creature who would die to, say, a stray Standing Fast

TCS basic Beiko had this issue leading into the 20F environment

A player, 5 February 2024 16:08

Looking back at the 20F legal pokemon shugenjas, interrupt was definitely consistent; however, none of them did have a gold cost tied to their abilities. I guess it's fair that the interrupt was chosen for that.

Jade ed. Rules Question: Do Toturi's Army and Yoritomo's Alliance count as "Clans" for purposes of cards like, Yoritomo's Armor?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 6 February 2024 01:11 · in reply

Yes, they do. I found a contemporary Ruling that "Mantis Clan" does not count twice because it's equivalent to YA, so by extrapolation, YA (and other such "Clans" without "Clan" in their keyword) do count.

A player, 6 February 2024 01:11

alright, thanks!

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 6 February 2024 01:12 · in reply

Also, sorry, you said "cards like" Yoritomo's Armor. You weren't just specifically asking about the armor. In that case, they DEFINITELY do. The armor was questionable, but "Clan" is the only term existent in Jade. "Faction" didn't come about until later.

A player, 6 February 2024 01:13

I was specifically referring to the armor, but I like to know for other scenarios as well. Helps to work out when this case comes up again... and also kinda figure out the mindset the rules were made in.

Yes. As of Ivory, keywords don't bleed down to the card's abilities.

A player, 9 February 2024 19:56

and with the Onyx nerf to the Honor keyword, this card is weaker than it would have been in Ivory environment had it been released alongside the rest of TBS

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 9 February 2024 19:58 · in reply

Debatable? The problem with the Honor keyword Interrupt may have been discovered and corrected sooner than Onyx had the game not been sold.

A player, 9 February 2024 20:01

sure, but this card would still have been released in TBS, which is the last 20F expansion. Even if they'd have nerfed the Honor keyword in time for the release of Onyx, this card would be weaker as a result

I'm saying the correction may have potentially even come prior to the release of TBS.

A player, 9 February 2024 20:42

Is the removal of Sincerity tokens timed at the same time as a response or an interrupt to the Recruit action? Asking specifically for this card: if I Honor interrupt on Ejio's Proclaim, can I retrieve the discarded Honor card via his Sincerity trait?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 9 February 2024 20:50

You play Interrupts after action is announced, but before effect resolves. In case of Recruit, it's before card enters play.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 9 February 2024 20:56

You announce Recruit and target face-up Personality. You also announce it's Proclaim action or not. If it's Proclaim in Interrupt window you use Honor ability to discard Honor card to ncrease honor gain after card enters play. Action is resolving, so Personality is entering play. You gain family honor from Proclaim (including + or - from previously played Honor ability) and then triggers Sincerity.

I am not sure you may choose what happens first - Sincerity or Proclaim gain.

A player, 9 February 2024 21:08

regarding Ejio, best I can find in the 20F CR is under Timing Conflicts (pg 39-40), specifically the last sentence in step C of resolving timing conflicts: active player chooses order (in this case, if I could proclaim Motoi, then I'd choose to resolve Sincerity first, then Proclaim for the Honor interrupt, whereas with Ejio, I Proclaim first with the Honor interrupt, then resolve Sincerity)

kempy_nezumi (not official), 9 February 2024 21:12 · in reply

There was this girl - without once-per-trigger restriction you could use X honor interrupts (on political honor cards), and then use same honor cards in discard (same turn) on same proclaim.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 9 February 2024 21:19 · in reply

No. The order of the gain versus the Sincerity doesn't matter. You don't/can't Interrupt then, only before the Recruit's effects resolve, which is well before either. So, in answer to your initial question, the Honor card is definitely in your discard by then and can be picked up, and the rest is irrelevant.

A player, 10 February 2024 12:36

Or perhaps, pre-errata, but also a bit more uniform?

Like... fixing misprints, and updates that occurred within the arc, but without updating it for usage with Ivory's rules.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 February 2024 12:36

Not likely in the near future? I believe it's on the Oracle owner's to-do list, but not as near the top as other things he hasn't gotten to yet.

A player, 10 February 2024 12:37

mostly... but every time I see the text "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them..." it hurts a little bit.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 February 2024 12:37

There are a few exceptions where I've let modernized Rules bend the card to them rather than the other way around, but I've tried more recently to minimize that.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 February 2024 12:38 · in reply

Sure, but that's not functionally different from how they work in-arc.

A player, 10 February 2024 12:39

I mean... yes... aside from the fact that events were used far more frequently in Jade arc, were far more impactful, and it really mattered what was still hidden in your provinces, especially if you play with Avoid Fate to protect against your own events showing up at the wrong time.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 February 2024 12:40 · in reply

I'm not following what you're saying here?

A player, 10 February 2024 12:40

any event that gives players the option to destroy one of their own provinces, even a small amount of information is a big deal.

A player, 10 February 2024 12:43

if I flip an Evil Feeds Upon Itself, and it's hitting me, and I don't yet know what's in my right-most province, the original rules would have me making the decision to use my Avoid Fate before I see what that card is. These rules would allow me to see it first.

Admittedly, it's probably an easy choice anyway, but having more information, if I know that card isn't Abandoning the Fortunes, I might be more inclined to just let it hit.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 February 2024 12:43

Ok, yeah, I'm still not following? Are you saying that the "Ivory wording" of old Events somehow makes them work differently? Insofar as revealing info? Or are you just talking generally, Ivory cards/Rules versus old?

A player, 10 February 2024 12:45

The Ivory rules fix allows you more information before you have to make a decision for events that make you lose provinces.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 February 2024 12:46

Oh, because you don't reveal them from left to right but all at once under Ivory Rules.

A player, 10 February 2024 12:46

right

A player, 10 February 2024 12:47

If this was your leftmost province in the middle of the game against an honor deck, do you take it, not knowing if your right-most province holds the only personality you could buy this turn?

If you know you've got two holdings and a Personality, would you make the same decision?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 February 2024 12:50

Yeah, I rather wish they hadn't gotten rid of the Events phase, but it is what it is. If you're playing arc-specific, you could interpret the triggered trait, "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn" on the new wording to trigger after every individual reveal. 😉 It doesn't say "all cards". So, flip-trigger, flip-trigger, perfect! 🙂

A player, 10 February 2024 12:51

I suppose that's one solution.

Answers on: The New Way
A player, 10 February 2024 12:54

It's one of those things that's probably far easier to do it the new way, especially since that's what most people would do anyway... but I'm quite in love with the more complicated method as I see it as having so much more flavor.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 February 2024 12:55

Yeah, once-per-game-per title Events was a lot more flavorful too, but also crazy unbalanced. 😛

A player, 10 February 2024 13:02

I would have definitely preferred to retain the events phase, but give events timing keywords, and for events that last a number of turns, include a mechanism to track it, like... "Forced Event: Put this event into play with two time tokens on it."

And Forced would just mean, you can't pass to the next phase until you've used every Forced action. Which is something they implemented in the FFG version, though they didn't have a lot of stuff for it to be used with. Events feel like a perfect spot for it.

A player, 10 February 2024 13:06

This is a nitpick about something that happened a very long time ago. I don't expect it to get changed again, so it's just something I'm gonna have to deal with.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 February 2024 22:03

There is only a specific time any Interrupt can be played, and it is before an action's effects resolve. Think of it as the "Engage"-type step of Battle. You pick a Battle (announce an action), and right before the Combat Segment (effects resolve), there is a specific window for Engage actions (likewise for Interrupts). Despite being their ostensible "replacement", they don't really work like Reactions at all.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 10 February 2024 23:16

I think that for some people delayed effects of some Interrupts make them confused.

Discarding a card for a Rulebook player ability is not "playing" the card, so no, the Sensei does not prevent that.

From the CR, definition of "Play": As a verb, “play” can refer to: putting into play a card type that normally enters play; using a Strategy card by putting it into the resolution area; bringing a Ring into play; or using an ability on a Ring that is out of play.

Original version of WSP gave Tacticians a Force bonus as the Terrain comes into play as a Battle Terrain action, based on their chi, whereas Diamond specified it into being a bonus from a Tactical action, and Emperor making it a straight up Tactical Reaction granted to all Tacticians at the battle. With Akodo Sensei, the Diamond and Emperor versions would not give any bonuses to those Personalities affected by the Sensei

With this card, it says you get a force bonus equal to the target's printed force. Does that mean if you bow a weapon with a force modifier that you don't get a bonus? Because it's a modifier and not actual force?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 February 2024 22:15 · in reply

No, it would be equal to the existent modifier. Even though that isn't "direct" Force, it is still Force; like if you have a Ranged 2 Attack that can target Items, it couldn't destroy a +3F Item.

How does Chrystanthemum Festival interact with the destruction condition on the Charter of the Mantis Clan? I would argue that I get my new Province first, which nukes the Charter, before they get their Province, on the grounds that it's a simultaneous thing, so the active player gets to decide the sequence.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 February 2024 03:27 · in reply

I'd agree it's simultaneous, however there's no active-player choice even involved. That's for when different things are triggered at the same time, but the triggers can't happen on top of each other, so the active player has to decide an order. So, if there were multiple different triggers caused by players gaining Provinces, active player would decide the order those triggers resolve, but it wouldn't change the fact all the Provinces were gained at the same time. So, for the purposes of destroying the Mantis Charter, there would never be a time when one player has more Provinces than the other because of it; they would all be gained at the same time.

Honored Guest allows Proclaiming for the specific circumstance of someone who doesn't have your Clan Alignment. That doesn't overcome Motoi's trait.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 17 February 2024 02:15

Sorry if I'm not explaining it properly, but the bottom line is that Honored Guest doesn't overcome his trait. It's like, if you have a Battle action (from before "Absent" was a thing) that says, "You can take this action even if you don't control any units at the battlefield", it doesn't overcome anything but the specific problem it refers to, the lack of Presence. If you also didn't have legal targets, you still couldn't take it.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 17 February 2024 02:20 · in reply

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 17 February 2024 02:25 · in reply

It took me a bit, but I also found the specific part of the CR that supports the ruling, too (top of page 43):

"PERMISSIONS #

Some text permits things to happen in violation of the rules, using terms such as “can” or “may.” Such permissions override specific restrictions and prevention effects in the rules; for example, “He may assign even if bowed.” A permission does not break rules that it doesn’t specifically refer to. Example: “Your target Infantry Personality may assign in Cavalry Maneuvers” does not allow a bowed unit to assign. [lol, outdated example, much, CR? It's cute we have that in common.😛 ] Likewise, a permission does not overcome restrictions or negations from card sources, unless overcoming card effects is specifically mentioned. Example: If a card says its Ranged Attack “can target Personalities with attached Followers,” this does not overcome another effect that says “This Personality cannot be targeted by Ranged Attacks.”"

As Marcus said, yes; the instant effect of Sneak has resolved, giving the Sneak player the first action. MM negates the effect of Wake that would give it to someone else, so it stays where it was from the Sneak. To use another instant effect as a hypothetical example: bowing a card. If Sneak's effect was instead, "Bow target guy", and Wake's was "Straighten target guy", and Wake was negated, the guy would still be bowed, if you follow me?

Ah, fair. To expand on that, all ongoing effects are end of turn unless specified. Control change is actually not ongoing but instant. No, it can. It circumvents the usual Fear targeting with its own.

A player, 20 February 2024 12:35

I'm more curious what happens if you combined the fear with a regular fear from an attachment: does it increase the Fear effect on each target, or once per target? And what about a Courage discard to increase/decrease it?

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 20 February 2024 12:36 · in reply

ah, the rule limits the targeting, not what it can affect, and the card explicitly allows the targeting... got it

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 20 February 2024 12:36 · in reply

You can't combine it with any Fear that can't target a Personality with attached Followers unless the target doesn't have any.

A player, 20 February 2024 12:37 · in reply

I would assume it still bows because Personalities with Followers are excluded from legal targets, not the effect itself (which is why certain other cards with fears or attacks that override this rule specify "may target" and not "may bow", iirc)

A player, 20 February 2024 12:38 · in reply

so it's a non-combinable Fear by rules implication? Got it. What about a use of the Courage Interrupt discard to increase/decrease it?

A player, 20 February 2024 12:40

From the rules I'd assume a Courage interrupt is to the effect, therefore can be used to make it a Fear 5 targeting each relevant card in the unit, or Fear 1 for a decrease

A player, 20 February 2024 12:43

(regarding Courage I'm asking mostly to verify my asumption)

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 20 February 2024 12:47 · in reply

Yeah, it's an unfortunate interpretive problem with strength-altering effects. Rarely are such things written once, but create multiple instances of the effect within the action, like in this case. I think the logical application is that they alter the number, then all effects based on that number are likewise altered, despite (and, in a way, because of) the fact all strength altering effects are unfortunately written assumptively supposing that the action is only creating one effect.

Consumed by Darkness does not overcome HR, right?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 20 February 2024 18:20 · in reply

Correct.

A player, 20 February 2024 18:25

Kinda seems anti-thematic. To be useable by most the user needs high honor to be able to buy anybody. But as it makes you lose honor and is a maho/shadowlands card it's slanted to a spider/shadowlands player...

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 20 February 2024 18:28 · in reply

Well, if that Spider player happens to be using Mishime Sensei, then they can ignore the HR. 🙂

A player, 20 February 2024 18:28

oh?

A player, 20 February 2024 18:29

oh

A player, 20 February 2024 18:29

thats crazy

A player, 20 February 2024 18:30

so...its best used by one sensei lol

A player, 21 February 2024 03:53

Can you still use Levied Refugees to fulfill banish costs while it's face-up in your hand?

A player, 21 February 2024 04:13

Yes

A player, 21 February 2024 16:47

most likely incredibly unlikely to happen, but I've got a hypothetical:

"Card memory" prevents an action without Repeatable from being used twice in the same turn. This means actions from Discipline cards cannot usually be taken in the same turn they were played.

The Onyx Crane SH Side B has a trait that gives Favor actions Repeatable.

Word from the Imperial Court becomes a Favor action when using it via Discipline. If I'm on Crane Side B, does that mean WftIC gains Repeatable? And since I'm discarding the Favor as an added cost to the Discipline, can I use the Crane SH's Response for the bow-less any-time lobby?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 21 February 2024 16:52 · in reply

You definitely cannot use the Crane SH's Response; this isn't a Favor cost. The rest seems to track; a Crane with Box Side 2 up using "Word" with Discipline would cause it to have "Repeatable" because it would give it "Favor". Weird that it gives itself "double Political" in that case too. 😛 Small oversight, I suppose.

Can Yaheiko's ability negate Seiden Sanzo's delayed effect? I assume you trigger her ability upon targeting but resolves when Sanzo's delayed ability takes effect.

can the fear from this stronghold combine with a fear on the unit it is targeting? im pretty sure no, because it is not in the same unit

A player, 22 February 2024 05:02 · in reply

correct, not the same unit

saaam (not official), 22 February 2024 05:02 · in reply

I think she'd have to trigger her Reaction just before destruction, so at the start of the Dynasty Phase. Since there's no destruction on inital targetting. So she needs to be unbowed to use her Reaction, or Seiden Sanzo nukes her.

A player, 22 February 2024 05:41

Thanks.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 22 February 2024 05:59 · in reply

Afaik it doesnt work this way. I need to dig for this.

saaam (not official), 22 February 2024 06:07

Oh?

saaam (not official), 22 February 2024 06:07

I'm genuinely curious.

saaam (not official), 22 February 2024 06:08

Her Reaction is when the card effect performs the destruction, not upon targeting. As in, you can't react immediately to entering a Iaijutsu Challenge or Duel, you have to focus first, lose, then trigger the Reaction, no?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 22 February 2024 07:57

I remember there was something about delayed effects. I may be wrong and it was maybe about Courage in Death or similiar stuff only. ;/

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 22 February 2024 10:10 · in reply

Yes is the answer to your question, but your assumption on the timing is wrong. You take the Reaction when it says, immediately before her destruction. So, if you used her to attack and she's now bowed at the start of your Dynasty phase when the destruction is occurring, you can't save her.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 22 February 2024 10:12

Sorry, I answered without seeing @saaam already had, but saaam is correct; @kempy_nezumi 's contrary recollection isn't.

Onyx edition rules question - the Legacy Dynasty action is not Repeatable, correct?

A player, 23 February 2024 13:40

Correct

A player, 24 February 2024 02:07

Tetsuo has his nagamaki, he bows both he and the nagamaki to make a melee 7, his ability lets him bow a polearm to straighten him, the first time his nagamaki bows, it straightens...what is the timing on this? can he straighten himself?

A player, 24 February 2024 02:09

I’ll let someone with more time break down the timing but yes, he can straighten himself

A player, 24 February 2024 02:09

It doesn't seem to me he would.

A player, 24 February 2024 02:10

but Im happy to see the timing

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 24 February 2024 04:29 · in reply

He and his Nagamaki were literally designed so that they could do that combo together. 😛 But anyway, the timing is: Announce and Bow Tetsuo E2 for his ability, Interrupt it with the Nagamaki's MA ability to combine them, immediately after the Nagamaki bows for the cost of its ability, its trait staightens it, then Tetsuo's ability resolves, first the MA, then the option to bow his (now straightened polearm) to straighten him.

A player, 24 February 2024 04:36

So you are saying that the bowing happens, trait kicks in to straighten, then you resolve the ability after that? I assumed that the ability would happen at the time of the bowing. But I guess you do bow to pay the cost, but you can't just bow to bow... so I dunno.

A player, 24 February 2024 04:39

But yes, I know it was designed to work together, but the timing didn't make sense to me.

A player, 24 February 2024 04:42

Thank you.

A player, 24 February 2024 23:30 · in reply

I thought that since the force bonus already includes the delayed death that would be the appropriate timing. thanks for the clarification.

A player, 27 February 2024 15:24

With floating gold, the gold fades per phase right? So, what about the combat step... if I bow a holding and produce 4 gold during the engage step, and pay 2 gold, does the 2 gold remain DURING the combat segment? or does it fade after engages?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 27 February 2024 15:26

Engage and Combat are within the same phase, Attack Phase. You keep it.

A player, 27 February 2024 15:26

awesome

A player, 27 February 2024 15:26

thank you
