Quick check, does Yari of Air get the gold reduction with the Dark Ring of Air and/or False Ring of Air?
Printed text mention 'the' before the name of the card it was intended to have interaction with, but oracle wording now mentions 'a'. Inclined to say yes at this point, but opted to confirm here.
Unsure if it'll also be worth considering updating the oracle wording from 'a Ring of Air' to 'a Ring card with the Air keyword' for more clarify.
Also, correlated the wording for cards that reference other card types (like personalities) with the x keyword. So far, I was able to see 'Air Shugenja' with Illusory Defense and 'Shugenja is Air' for Bushido's Scourge.
Currently, the confusion stems from the card name being the same as the combined card type and element keyword. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it does mean you can control any Ring of Air derivative, but I grant you, it could be clearer. I think the word "the" was changed to "a" on Armor of Earth, Gunsen of Water, and Mask of the Void specifically to imply they also worked with the Dark Rings (and I just changed Yari to match those in the Oracle, not with any specific intent of my own). Do you recall for sure that the DE "Ring Items" worked with either Dark or regular Rings during DE when they were all legal, @Alex Jones ?
Alex Jones (rules official), 2 October 2022 08:36
I don't recall the question ever coming up.
A player, 2 October 2022 12:08
I always had the impression that the different ring variance were intended to act the same as the regular rings for most purposes
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 2 October 2022 13:30
Yeah, as I think more upon it, DE still operated under the "titles convey keywords" and "keywords are separable" (or, that is, recognizable in single/or group form that can be separated from a larger whole) Rules, so to that extent a "Dark Ring of Air" was also a "Ring of Air". The question never came up, as @Alex Jones said above, because it was obvious under that Ruleset. It was in Samurai that all keywords had to be separate, specific, and in the keyword line. So, yes, the "Ring Items" definitely were intended to work with all Ring variants, and I can update their traits from... ew, I can't believe I left them in "Diamond" templating; why did I do that... for clarity. ๐
A player, 2 October 2022 14:39
Exactly. Obvious at the time.
Alex Jones (rules official), 2 October 2022 14:52
How would you rephrase them? "an Air Ring"?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 2 October 2022 16:36 · in reply
Yep, and already done, right after I did that post. ๐
A player, 3 October 2022 05:48
Saw the updated oracle text. Looks simpler, but clearer. Thanks!
Yup, had to scratch my head on this one since the answer looked intuitively obvious. Then again, we end up getting some people asking being anal about stuff like this.
Just one hiccup, the following lost the part about their GC being set to 0 Gunsen of Water #cardid=2923 Armor of Earth #cardid=438 Mempo of the Void #cardid=5023
Alex Jones (rules official), 3 October 2022 05:55
Yeah, those three were reprinted in Diamond, and had to be errata'd fairly early on...
wasn't active at the time. I can see how the items were abused ๐ 'Erratum: Errata'd via the internet.' missing in armor of earth. then again this might not be the correct channel to mention that
kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 October 2022 06:12 · in reply
It was available in cumulative FAQ page on AEG website
I remember when those changes were made. My first deck was the House of Tao (Brotherhood of Shinsei version) and was excited to play the Dragon Clan version...and then saw the errata shortly after ๐ญ

I'm not sure why that required discussion, tbh, but the Rules Team discussion forum is long gone.

I'm looking at the card "Lessons Never Forgotten" and it reads...
"Battle: Choose your performing Yojimbo: Melee 4 Attack. If you own a dead Courtier or Shugenja, you may target and destroy an attachment.
Can I destroy an attachment before the Melee 4 Attack? I wouldn't think so because of the order it's listed in, however that would intuitively seem to me the whole point of the effect. Seems more useful to destroy an item/follower before the attack resolves so that's why I ask.
kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 October 2022 20:52
You must follow order of effects.
kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 October 2022 20:53
Anyway with this action you may Melee into Personality A and destroy attachment equipped to Personality B
A player, 15 October 2022 21:01
I figured that was the case, but wanted to clarify. Thanks
kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 October 2022 22:18
Destroying attachment and then ranged/melee/destroy would be a powerful effect. Reversed order is much more popular.

It'll depend on which ruleset you're using, I believe.

Nothing changed for cards like this through the whole time. To work without Presence such card should have "Even if you dont have any Personalities in current battlefied" or just Absent designator.
kempy_nezumi (not official), 16 October 2022 07:42
Only change was for cards that move into battle.
saaam (not official), 16 October 2022 07:43
Interesting. I thought that at one point things were changed enough that if it targeted something in the present battle, it would work.
saaam (not official), 16 October 2022 07:43
Ahh.
kempy_nezumi (not official), 16 October 2022 07:43
Pre Ivory card that moves into battle creates and satisfies Presence.
saaam (not official), 16 October 2022 07:45
Gotcha.
Alex Jones (rules official), 17 October 2022 06:19
Yeah, you always had to have Presence - the only change was that actions used to be able to create Presence if they moved one of your units there (ie you could satisfy Presence before or after the action), but that option was removed with Ivory.
Alex Jones (rules official), 17 October 2022 06:20
Note: Reactions don't require Presence, but Engage, Battle and Interrupt actions do.
saaam (not official), 17 October 2022 06:21
Yeah. Back in the dayยฎ, it was fun to drop a Fall on Your Knees or Bad Karma to cancel the attacker's action without presence.
A player, 17 October 2022 10:15
Ok that's really good know about the reactions, so are reactions not considered actions then? And if so, does that mean reactions printed on personalities, strongholds, holdings, etc. Can be used multiple times?
Alex Jones (rules official), 17 October 2022 11:37
Reactions are actions.
Alex Jones (rules official), 17 October 2022 11:39
Abilities are only Repeatable if they have that keyword (or were printed prior to Lotus Edition).
Alex Jones (rules official), 17 October 2022 11:39
The Oracle should have Repeatable on all abilities printed prior to Lotus Edition.
Alex Jones (rules official), 17 October 2022 11:40

playing reactions this way was 1995-2014 ๐ but in Ivory you can cancel Engage action, so eg you can stop rulebook Cavalry movement without Presence ๐

saaam (not official), 17 October 2022 16:45
Ugh. That's... interesting.
kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 October 2022 16:47
in Ivory Cavalry is rulebook once per turn Engage ability
saaam (not official), 17 October 2022 16:47
Right.
A player, 17 October 2022 16:48
I really hate what they did in Ivory
kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 October 2022 16:50
i don't. mostly. new cavalry, new naval, open equip, double sided strongholds = yes. gold pooling, interrupts - hmm... at least they tried to make another "interrupt" window after action's resolution in onyx.
saaam (not official), 17 October 2022 16:51
The lack of gold pooling was such a notable factor, though. It defined most of the game's history and deckbuilding and playing.
kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 October 2022 16:52
when they introduced gold pooling they shoul think more about holdings and throw out all ones that produce more than cost (like clan holdings!). 1st turn gold production was so important in ivory as it snowballed from there much faster than in old system
kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 October 2022 16:53
of course they were going to remove such holdings in onyx, but... was too late of course.
kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 October 2022 16:54
mantis playing some senseis to get negative honor to activate second side of stronghold and additional gold = dominance
kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 October 2022 16:56
with god draw, mantis could buy 3 clan holdings first turn and it could create 13 gold to spend on turn 2
kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 October 2022 16:57
and we are talking about non corrupt holdings
kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 October 2022 16:57
just clan holdings
Alex Jones (rules official), 17 October 2022 17:24
There were some interesting Lion gold schemes, too, involving Kitsu Watanabe.
Alex Jones (rules official), 17 October 2022 17:28
Given that there were plenty of ways for Lion to buy a 4g producing holding on turn 1 (Copper Mine + Temple of Destiny/The Blessing, or Forgotten Legacy + The Blessing, or Suana Dojo), you could, on turn 2, buy Watanabe plus a Musha Gaeshi plus another 3g holding.
Alex Jones (rules official), 17 October 2022 17:30
So you'd have 3g (SH) + 4g (turn 1 purchase) + 3g (Musha Gaeshi) + 3g (Watanabe) + 3g (another holding) on turn 3: 16g
A player, 20 October 2022 01:31
Hi everyone - Jade-era rules question dump: 1 - When overlaying Shahadet exp1 on Naga Warlord, do the force buffs stack? i.e. all attached followers would have +2F? 2 - When using Shiodaโs ability, can you bow a region like Temple of Osano-Wo? 3 - Does Komokoโs Charge affect Otaku Xieng Chi? I am assuming not because Komokoโs Charge doesnโt target (otherwise it would per the โfooโ rule?) 4 - Ninja Stronghold cannot pay for ninja strategies like Ninja Kidnapper correct? 5 - How was going first determined in the Jade era (and throughout the life of the game)? The Jade rulebook mentions 3 different methods - highest starting honor, highest focus value of a randomly cut to card, or combining the two. Looks like by Gold it was just highest starting honor only?
saaam (not official), 20 October 2022 01:35
Traits don't continue to exist, only abilities, such as Battle/Open/Limited/Reaction.
saaam (not official), 20 October 2022 01:36
Ninja Stronghold CAN pay for those, because it's not a variable cost card, and it's a Ninja card.
saaam (not official), 20 October 2022 01:36
Yeah, Gold was weird.
saaam (not official), 20 October 2022 01:37
Generally, it was just starting family honour, after the Sensei mod was applied. For a while it was a deck cut, which led to a lot of cheating.
saaam (not official), 20 October 2022 01:37
Sometimes we did FH + cut FV, to try and change things up a bit, but not hugely.
saaam (not official), 20 October 2022 01:38
Yeah, Shioda should be able to bow your own Temple of Osano-Wo, by the Foo Rule.
saaam (not official), 20 October 2022 01:40
I don't get the question about Kamoko's Charge, because it's a blanket effect. So if your Xieng Chi is still Cavalry, then she'd get the bonus.
A player, 20 October 2022 01:40
ah got it, thank you. didn't realize that the warlord force buff was a trait but that makes sense, clears up some of the confusion I had with other cards when overlaying
A player, 20 October 2022 01:41
I was wondering if she got the additional +1 force bonus from her own trait, but I assumed not because kamoko's charge doesn't target
saaam (not official), 20 October 2022 01:41
Yeah. Traits are "on" all the time, unless otherwise indicated, but disappear when overlayed or the card is "blanked" via an effect.
saaam (not official), 20 October 2022 01:41
Correct.
saaam (not official), 20 October 2022 01:42
I see the confusion. They mean "Charge", the card titled just that, but, yeah.

A player, 20 October 2022 01:44

Technically, this Event was actually more meta against decks that had a superior draw engine (or used to fuel more complicated combos of your own by getting cards twice as fast). While Scorpion in particular had a lot of Dynasty-discard tactics up their sleeve, there weren't/aren't a lot of Fate-mill tactics to play against your opponent to make DotDL a way to try to "win" proactively.

No. There's nothing mechanical about Retainer. Anyway in 20F mechanical keywords are in bold
Building gold scheme was very interesting : what are the cost of my personalities ? what are the holdings actions I want to put in ? How to build a gold scheme in order to minimize the emperor taxes ? Gold pool was confusing (you had to remember how gold you have spend from the pool) and annoying. Cavalry was no more cavalry, but a pedestrian army with one pony. And actions were : -2F, or +1F... In short, the end of the CCG heralded what the LCG would be. The epic blast of this outstanding game was already gone. MHO.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 26 October 2022 14:02
I don't think so. I remember that in Samurai people were playing same Holdings all the time: clan holdings, 1-2 Legacy (Private Trader and Seat of Power), Famous Bazaar, Secluded Waystation, Shrine to Fukurokujin, Secluded Village (if you was low honor clsn) + 3-4 slots depending on deck type. That was boring. ๐ And is i checked there were nearly 100 Holdings legal in Samurai environment ๐

But, as i said above, well named Holding with flavour abilities also add value to game itself. And that what they did in Ivory/20F. I want to say, that system was okish, but design was not - it was so easy to abuse gold and it snowballed much, much faster than in earlier editions.
