Sounds like you’d enjoy Old Back Only. Many returning players do due to the simplicity of deck making and not having to worry about distinguishing sets.

old back would be sets before War of the Spirits right? is there somewhere I could read about that because I've been looking for a format like that
You are spot on a player It’s a great format because anything is eligible that’s old back. No need to worry about “what set is legal?” In fact even the promo cards are legal if they are old back. If it’s old back it plays.
that's great if you have physical cards. It's a bit harder if you're less familiar with that period and trying to play online.
But, that's not really what it's for, is it?
yeah personally now I play online and use proxies a lot but I know what cards have old backs or not so it is nbd for me I had considered "old card frames" as a format before but the card pool is significantly smaller
I have a bunch of decks with cards up to just DJH. Definitely a smaller cardpool, but still interesting. The HE/DJH strongholds really improved a bunch of Clans and Factions that were barely playable in Clan Wars.
Yeah I have two different play groups one in Midwest and one in the Northeast and we play IRL only - Old Backs Only Format.
Yup, agreed.
i think it might be cool to do a format for each card frame style
Those exist, more or less. Diminishing returns going backward to the first one due to cardpool, and for the "interim" ones, some power level issues.
There's a format that's kind of a hybrid between the most recent/modern one, and several sets/arc(s?) from the "interim" time period.
anyway i would totally be up for playing old card frame on SnM if anyone wants
I think the most interesting format might be extended formats. Emperor extended feels like one of the more naturally connected formats to me.
It is lightning fast, but the card pool does seem to make sense.
Jade extended feels like a good old school format with a lot of play.
I can't really speak for the samurai Lotus diamond or gold formats, but the gold through diamond have very similar play patterns, and Lotus through samurai, perhaps with a minor ban list, I think could be a very interesting format.
I would also like to see a Ivory plus format, where it's just Ivory Edition and everything that came afterwards, including the stuff that Onyx lives have come out with. I don't know if it would be a great format, but, at the very least the cards all follow the same framework.
The only issue with Jade extended, is that it doesn't include a lot of the Imperial Arc cards. But, calling it more like Jade open, and including all of that stuff explicitly might be a better way to go about it
jade extended is kind of weird because like why not just play imperial + jade then?
Mostly story reasons, but a few balance issues too.
That was "Open" back then. Clan Wars + Jade Arc.
old frame and old back both have the advantage of no spirit house lol
The Cube I just put together is effectively Imperial arc plus Jade and hidden emperor
And I tried to limit the amount of Jade arc stuff in it, but there were a few slots that I still needed to fill.
That being said, the jumping power level is obvious.
Yeah, though a bunch of Clans/Factions are back to either being competitive or at least Tier 1.5, which is needed. E.g.: Monk, Toturi's Army, Naga, kinda-sorta 'Corn (they were reasonably strong with a crap box in Clan Wars).
It was really sad to try and play the non-'Corn ones back in Clan Wars. It felt like a grimdark roguelike almost.
Yeah. Ironically, I think in a draft environment, the Unicorn stronghold is actually quite good.
True. The 5GP is huuuuge.
We found that, too, when playing a much simpler "cube", in the sense of "here's a Stronghold and a few hundred random cards, make a deck" formats.
yeah looking at what jade through DJH adds to like toturi's army and it really is a big improvement over just clan wars
I'm not like, adding cards through DJH. Like, my plan is to only include cards that could have been story cards from that era. Or like, cards that make sense in the immediate aftermath of the Second Day of Thunder.
So like, Hitomi not having to use the Obsidian Hand to have Shugenja. Yoritomo having his full textbox, stuff like that.
Also, I'm planning on, as much as possible, playing cards as printed. And for some reason, Hida Kisada inexp doesn't have a "will only join Crab" clause. This was errata'd, but considering I've got two Yakamos who already have that text, I think it's funny to have Kisada without it.
If a card cannot work as printed, then I'm either going to remove it from the cube, or I'm going to try to fabricate a version that does work.
But if I could get rid of loyal from every personality, I think I would prefer to do that.
I think in like sealed they just said at some point that you could ignore loyalty
Yeah, that helps a lot.
out of about 235 personalities in this cube, only about 16 have that kind of restriction. I think it'll be fine.
Akodo Toturi, Matsu Tsuki, Shiba Ujimitsu, Shiba Tsukune, Doji Hoturi x2, Hitomi, Togashi Yokuni, Shinjo Yokatsu x2, Hida Yakamo x2, Bayushi Shoju, Qamar, and that's all of them.
There are definitely a few meme cards in here, too... like, Philosophers, The 38th Hantei Falls, or The Darkest Magics. But, like, if you don't try, it'll never work, right?
Did you notice what makes Shiba Ujimitsu so special?
yeah, and unfortunately, it's just not realistic to take advantage of it in this cube. He does have an actual ability, too though.
I miss Double Chi. It was so fun.
Correct - No Spirit Broken nonsense in Old Back Only
I mean, it has two Tier 1 decks, which is a lot, but it's only a fraction of the total Tier 1 decks.
in jade/jade extended?
Open.
I imagine they'd have at least one T1 deck in both EJade and SJade.
from what people say it sounded like they kind of dominated during that brief period they were around before jade ended
The first UK Kotei I went to, which was after Spirit Wars came out, had a Spirit Honour vs Spirit Honour final.
Not surprising. BASH and SMASH were really strong, and good draws made them exceptionally difficult to beat.
What was SMASH?
BASH was Broken-Ass Spirit Honour, right?
been thinking about the merits of old back vs. old frame
old back gives everyone 3 houses, sensei, and adds ratling
old frame gives everyone 2 houses and no sensei
well except shadowlands only has 1 house in old frame
Barely adds Ratling. Pre Gold-MRP, the Rat Stronghold is Unaligned, not a fully fledged Faction.
huh
You said "old back adds Ratling", so I was clarifying it only kinda does. My understanding of old back and old frame is that they also play as if in those era, not considering later MRPs.
so ratling isn't a clan alignment so you only get the 1 gold discount no clan discount?
yeah i assume this would play jade rules and use jade mrps
Yep. In Jade.
also I played ratling in gold so I'm used to them being basically a joke faction lol
yeah I think i like old frame a little better because I'm not sure if I like the complexity sensei add to the game
