Hello, it's been a while since I've played Old L5R but I was thinking of a multiplayer format that was more casual and less constructed.
Itstead of everyone having their own deck, there would be a universal deck(s) everyone would share. Players would still have strongholds and clans, but they would draw from the same deck.
I'm planning to impliment a trading rule where players could buy from other players provinces for a fee. That would help others get the clan members what they want. Lastly I want to make multiple decks that players can pool from, like a Rokugan dynasty deck, a Shadowlands dynasty deck, and a holdings dynatsy deck (This would prevent holding screw). And fate decks will lightly be separated by card type.
I think with just the base rules, this could make it really feel political and a lively world where clans interact in a society and make deals and such.
Working on my modern deck list for Gencon, having difficulty slimming it down to 50/50. So many options
What clan and decktype?
Have you checked other top Modern decks to get inspiration about some really cool cards?
Mantis magistrates. Haven't really found any deck lists for Mantis. There was a Phoenix Inquisitor deck that gave me a few ideas
You may also check all Magistrate decks since Samurai edition. Also if your decks is about punishing being dishonorable, also all solid dishonor decks.
hello, i just bought the emperor gempukku edition starter display. I wondered if i should buy a gempukku display box in addition, or is it better to just leave it as it is?
for casual play only
It's up to you. Gempukku boosters contain only 6 cards but all of them are Rare cards. With full box there are chances you will got some duplicates to make decks more consistent. But Bushi format Emperor (no Rare cards) is also a good way to play L5R.
are rare cards more powerful in general? because balance would be more important than power, and we are 4 players so if only 1-2 copies of a powerful staple would be problematic :/
Yes. But during Emperor, most impactful were cards from direct-to-player sets like Forgotten Legacy (an expansion that shaped up whole Emperor) and many Organized Play promos. For casual gaming sticking to non-rare and non-promo card pools should be fine. But some decktypes/themes/strongholds might be less viable without access to soe mspecific cards eg i think it will be hard to make a solid dishonor deck in Bushi format.

With about a month to go to GenCon, here is a clean list of L5R events hosted by the Onyx Lives! Project and Pine Box Entertainment being held at GenCon 2025. Within you will find a chronological schedule, linked PDFs with additional information about each event, and the GenCon catalog ID for each event, linked directly to its page on the GenCon web site.
For those of you who were interested in participating in our events but found the catalog difficult to navigate, we hope this will help.

I am confused about go master because many terrain cards seem to have the innate ability to destroy a present terrain anyways 🤔
When Go Master was printed and legal, that was not the case.
There were roughly 10 legality arcs/blocks over the 20 years that the game was officially produced; new Terrains innately destroying the previous one was only the paradigm in the final 2-3 arcs, and Go Master was only printed during the very first 3.
did all terrains in the last three arcs replace the current one? because eg deadly ground does not say so(the errataed version)
Yes, but Deadly Ground wasn't in the last 3.
ah okay
thank you
