Drew transferred it to you?
For the first time since playing on Sun and Moon, I finally figured out how I could put a name to my account. I am called The Mantis Legacies. I AM the legacy of the Mantis. If anyone wants to play a game or two on there, look me up. Then I will have more than two players to play against every once in a while
Referencing that quote above
You mean, your username in the SnM app, in its GUI config?
yeah.
Took me a while to find out how to put a name on there
Good job.
š
Tsuruchi Ryan or Yoritomo Ryan didn't seem to have a nice ring to it, so I went with Legacies
Iām not sure what the card mix is like in Empire at War boosters. Normally a pack is kind of F/D/F/D style, but Iāve opened two now that were six common personalities in a row, and the one I just opened is, here are the commons. All from one pack.
Was this an issue somehow? Itās all proxies. :p
Empire at War was one of the sets where the quality control was just abysmal. There were entire boxes of packs with no rares.
Ah. The card feel is different, too. Less slick.
At least the rare thing hasn't happened, but I opened a pack this morning and the top four are proxies again. Looking at the card list, there are only 60 commons and 10 of them are proxy, so it makes sense. More a weird quirk and bound to happen like this just from sorting sometimes.
It got so bad that at one point they released a new set as Print and Play until they could get the printers in order.
Base EE was late so they even released PDF and allowed to play early Koteis with proxies (!)
aka Kolat Edition š
Kolat: Man must be allowed to rule themselves! Gozoku: We're gonna be men who rule the Empire! Kolat: no wait
Personally, I prefer the Kolat. Better organized, and like... just as arrogant, but with better interests in humanity?
I remember seeing this nomenclature as a mistake. In any other game, it wouldāve been seen merely as a cute nod, but because of the player influence on L5Rās story, many assumed there would be consequences for including Kolat Edition cards in their decks.
I wish it would have lead to more storyline implications. They didn't do nearly as much of that after a certain point.
Do we have definitive information as to why that was the case? I joined in late Samurai Edition, and I feel I missed out on a lot of this ādeck mattersā element even though it was laid out in the then-current rulebook.
_The Honourable Dragon Movement has entered the chat._
"Yo, Phoenix clan, you're way overusing Corrupted Silver Mines." "Yeah, what about it, we're winning." "Yes, yes you are. Here's your prize..."
Sadly, I do not. I assume that was an internal change (maybe it had to do with all the tracking of information) that wasn't used in storyline tournaments like it was from Clan Wars though Lotus era.
Found Jade starters for Naga and Shadowlands for $8 each, which is weirdly useful that I somehow lost my Treaty with the Naga and Writings of Kuni Yori somewhere.
Holy crud these cards have the smell. The new packs don't have it. I had almost forgotten it. o.o
Yeah, the old ones used to have a really good smell.
So, Ikoma Tsunuri Ex, Kuni Yori Ex, Ninja Kidnapper.
Not terrible.
Enh. Kinda is.
Especially since Ninja Kidnapper used to be Uncommon in FK.
Oh, it could be much worse
And since I can't locate either of those personalities, it's nice to get fresh unplayed copies for the binders.
Fair.
Is The Smell a good thing, or a bad thing?
It's a great thing.
When card games were first hitting, there was this whiff of cardboard and I honestly think it was like... benzene or the ink residue
I didn't, but I totally saw people open magic cards and shove their nose into the pack.
Oh so it was pretty common for Magic as well as L5R and other card games.
the new CARD smell lol
You could kind of tell if a game was low quality printing from either the lack of the smell, or they were super slick, like almost laminated.
Oh alright. the quality had a lot to do with it too
In my case, I've only been a collector of L5R cards for the purposes of literal card game play. I've never played or collected Magic or Pokemon. I concentrate on what the particular card does and the traits of the personality, etc. so I haven't really paid attention to smells.
Nah, it's probably more normal not to. XP
I remember these cards taking me aback. āKyogenā is not a proper name (at least to my knowledge), but a term for the style of theater the character is being depicted as performing. So it could have easily just been reprinted as Kyogen throughout, unless there is some other factor Iām missing about āSoul ofā cards. Did they appear in the fiction somewhere?
From the Imperial Gift
I imagine they are both "Soul of Kyogen" so they could reprint them thematically, without layering (Kyogen > Soul of Genmyo > Soul of Myuken when they are all functionally the same)
As for why they kept changing the name, so lore people don't ask how he survived a few hundred years without getting an Exp
Iām mostly just questioning why the name, which Iām sure was originally intended as a descriptor, could not have returned on the subsequent printings, unless Genmyo or Myuken made a story appearance somewhere. My guess is that whoever named Genmyo did not realize that Kyogen was not meant as a proper name, but who knows?
It's Feudal Not-Japan. It's possible they knew what it meant, and gave the original character the name of the style as a way of suggesting he invented it. Alternately, if he's a great actor, maybe he doesn't have an identity except for what he was famous for? Like he's so good at mimicry no one even knows who he was anymore?
It might be when they were in that middle group of going from absolutely not naming most things correctly until they were very well-known, to trying to be really accurate on other things.
Like Die Tsuchi or Otaku, or when the original RPG said that it was appropriate to pick random syllables "as long as it sounds good".
Having researched how a lot of these cards got made I think youāre giving way more credit than is due
I think they probably picked a word, used it on a card, and then never thought about it again after that
While later editions did better due diligence in naming and art by then the game had an enormous body of rule framework and itās own internal history distorting any attempt to make the names they gave make any sense
Name something cool, then have to go back and retroactively give it a reason for that. I think the coincidence is a little too high that they named a card about an actor after an actual type of play, and anything that's a thing can be a name. I know I'm providing a possibility that is not known, but since we don't really know if it wasn't, I guess it's just as likely.
Meaning I don't think they picked a random word.
I think they definitely knew it was related to acting. But then didnāt worry about the fact that it wasnāt a person
I think that's the balance, yeah. I don't think it's unnatural to name a person after a thing they're known for, and write a narrative around it, or they thought 'oh this is a minor card that no one is going to think much about but we want to look at least a little authentic'.
I mean, there's no Shinjo Uma personality, which makes sense.
https://www.gencon.com/events?search=l5r&category=Tradable+Card+Game
i wasn't that pissed about missing gencon this year until i saw that
Where can I find a modern legal list
Ty for some reason modern legal wasnāt showing on filters
:baro_dote:
Gotta remember how to play this game for gencon
i'm guessing no one wanted harlem shake in modern and thats why charter of the legion of two thousand is banned
Both are legal in Modern format. Banned list of Modern:
With limit of one card per deck there's no way to create any "faceless" token swarms.
thank you kempy
I thought Bamboo and Border were auto-starts?
Maybe the previous ruleset
BK and BH are autostarts in: Celestial, Emperor, The Obsidian Hand legacy and in Big Deck. They are optional in AEG Legacy.
Modern uses Twenty Festivals (Ivory) as core rule set so there's no starting BK and BH. But there's 20F rulebook 1st turn Cycle ability (literally one of basic BK abilities) + Samurai era Legacy starting holding for second player (like in Samurai) but only if you play non two-sided Stronghold of Ivory era.
so its been a while, for the free mulligan is it all or nothing or can i pick which provinces i want to mulligan
It's the rulebook player ability in Ivory / Twenty Festivals and also in Modern
Interesting that it's face-up only.
So if you somehow draw just Celestials/Events/Regions, you're still hosed.
No, because "turn all cards in your Provinces face-up".
"If it is your first turn, choose one or more face-up cards [...]"
yes, its about cards you can put on bottom, but then you flip up all face down cards
previously BK got that awkward ability, as you had to put on the bottom even face-down cards iin provinces if you wanted to flip them up
Cycle just flips everything up (after sending some previously face-up cards to the bottom).
But timing-wise, I can flip my cards face-up, see a card I don't want yet (like Occult Murders), and cycle it before it resolves?
No
Because in pre-Ivory editions, Events are triggered only during Events phase
I think that was part of Shiwan's question for Modern, not to put words in their mouth.
In Modern, as there no Events phase, all old Events have new wordings in Oracle
After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, starting with you and proceeding in turn order, each player destroys a Personality or Retainer controlled by the player to his right.
Right, I know that part.
But when Shiwan said you're screwed if you flip an event at the wrong time, you said no. I got confused.
ah, i read it wrong ;/
So yes, if you flip up pre-Ivory event after refill
you cant discard them, and they will not trigger if they are pre-ivory events
or you may leave them in provinces and they will trigger at beginning of next turn
Because you reveal cards after the event phase?
There is no Event Phase in Ivory.
So that's where kempy's second answer is confusing me; I'm not trying to be dense. So turn one, I hit Dynasty and turn all my cards face up. I have an Occult Murders and do not want. It triggers anyway.
But if I refill a province any other way face-up after Dynasty (such as the Cycle Limited action), it sits there and waits for the next Dynasty phase to trigger.
But there is not enough time to use Cycle to prevent the event from happening, because it's not a reaction to the flipping of cards.
I'm choosing that event specifically because it doesn't have a 'hang out until used' ability, or an 'place in play' ability.
"So turn one, I hit Dynasty and turn all my cards face up. I have an Occult Murders and do not want. It triggers anyway." - it wont trigger after face up
after refilling face up with Cycle or BK ability
and Dynasty phase is at the end of turn - you confuse it with Events phase (in preivory editions) or beginning of Action phase in Ivory
Yes, I apologize, I'm looking at the Ivory rule book and it says Action 1 phase is turning Dynasty cards face up.
So on my turn, I turn cards face-up at the beginning. If Occult Murders is there, it has to trigger. If a Gold Mine were there, and I then use my Cycle action to refill face-up, and Occult Murders is my cycled card, it doesn't trigger until the start of my next turn.
yes
Excellent. Thank you for helping me understand.
So a turn one Occult Murders is a wasted event, since there would be no targets, and there's no time to use Cycle to save it.
cycle/bk works great with Celestials or/and new Ivory Events that doesn't trigger but just stays in Province and have limited/open/engage abilities you may use once and then discrd them
yes
unless you are second and your op brough some personalities or retainers first turn
So A Hero's Courage has a trigger that puts it into play. A Fever in the Blood enters play with its Limited effect, but the effect goes off immediately, right? Because otherwise it couldn't be used defensively.
It's a different way of saying it persists until your next turn.
The effect goes off immediately, but it's there so I can, say, Cycle the Gold Mine, see it, and then put it into play during Action 2.
1st turhn. You flip only holdings. As first Limited action you use Cycle, you send all card to bottom, refill and flip up all cards in provinces. A Fever in the Blood is one of them
as another limited action you use its Limited ability - so by its text you take it from province and put into play
Right.
as cards texts ovverrides rulebook, this evens text allows to stay in game until begining of your next turn
if you have such event
you use its open ability and then this event is discarded from rulebook effect
Right, that works if you have a face-up after reveal.
yes
So the wording is there on A Fever In the Blood so I can refill face-up after the reveal, see it, and basically use it anyway immediately out of sequence.
you use it as Limited action during your Action phase
you may even leave it in province for X turns (clogging it)
and use its Limited ability (to put it into play) on your X turn after revealing
Right. I mean, the Force reduction in this case happens while the end is in play, right? So if I were to use Cycle as a Limited action after reveal, and see it there, I can use another Limited action to put it into play. Because of this particular Event, if I put it into play, the force reduction applies immediately and until the beginning of my next turn and it discards itself.
yes
force reduction doesnt work when this even is still in province, you have to use its limited ability to put it into play
then force reduction start working
And that is on a timer, right? Because if I don't use it during my turn, then when my next turn rolls around, it's in my Province face-up, and is going to trigger then.
In this case, it's either do it this turn, or do it next turn.
such event don't trigger themselves
that's main differene between ivory and older events
older events triggger automatically
ivory events stay in province until you use one of their abilities
then they are discarded by default OR in case of favor.. are put into play by their text
all ivory events have abilities
limited, open, battle, engage or interrupt
to make old events compatibler with new rulesets thay have added special passive trait in their text
So in Modern, Imperial Census is legal. It doesn't have a 'put into play ability', and in that specific case, it provides its own trigger.
"After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them..."
Because the card specifically says "if this Event is face-up", the card overrides that rule.
yes
exactly
So just to gather it all up: In Ivory / Modern Legality, all Events (even if not printed) linger in your Province until you put it into play. This is why a card like Losing the Way has a Limited action on it, but not the 'put into play' trigger, because all events have the ability to wait to trigger it then use its ability.
It would turn face-up and sit there until I use its Limited ability, then because it's an event card, its ability is used and it discards itself.
yep
Thank you for your patience. I appreciate it. I hope it wasn't frustrating.
no problem
Hopefully less frustrating here than at the table during a game. <.<
ivory events are more safe as you choose a moment you want to play them. pre ivory events triggers only at beginning of turn
trip down memory lane. The old L5r forums
So pretending that Occult Murders is Modern Legal. If I turned it face-up on turn one, it would sit there until I chose to trigger it.
Wait, no, because it dictates its timing as an autotrigger.
yes its Oracle trait triggers it automatically if its flipped up at beginning of turn only
I'm trying to shake my Imperial thru Jade training.
I'm still trying to remember 3/4 of the ivory keywords
Don't blame you
New Calvary/Naval and all that
its like i haven't played the game in 8ish years
That's why the overwhelming majority of Imperial events have their Oracle text rewritten to include 'if this Event is face-up', because the cards were designed/balanced around the concept they had to trigger immediately.
yes
every pre-ivory event (if it didnt have ivory reprint) should have added this trigger line
in ivory you just wait with this event until Dynasty phase nad use its ability as Dynasty ability
buying guys during Dynasty phase is now Dynasty Recruit ability
and you can use also Dynasty: abilities liek this event
only rulebook restriction is you may use them only during your own Dynasty phase
And that's also why Alliance is reworded without the immediate effect trigger, but with an Open enters play, because the effect is permanent and instead of kinda 'letting it be remembered', it hits the field and stays.
And also allows a later card to discard it while its in play.
yes
That was a logic-and-understanding question, so I am glad it worked.
And you can't Avoid Fate an Event that is in play already, but you can wait until the player attempts to actually play it, either into play or as the inherent use during Dynasty, because it's a reaction to the triggered trait.
yes
And any appropriate reaction can be used against an Event that has entered play and has an action trigger.
but you can use Avoid Fate works only for old events
Reaction: Before the triggered trait of an Event in a Province resolves, the trait does not resolve. Before the next phase begins, the Event's player shuffles it into his deck and refills the Province. 3
you cant cancel Ivory event with Avoid Fate
Right, because it only affects things that are happening from a Province, and they have to include the updated phrase of the insta-resolution.
but you may cancel it with Forewarning
Reaction: Before an Event's triggered trait or ability resolves, negate its effects.
Even though it's an Event, though, if there was a card that prevented someone from searching their deck as a Reaction, it can still 'counter' Wisdom Gained, because it's an appropriate reaction to use when someone tries to search their deck.
@Brook Cunningham anyway i'm curious why Avoid Fate doesnt work for new events?
I know that's just a made-up scenario, I don't know if such a card exists.
yes, as Reactions may trigger to anything - as its written on the card
even if there's no Reactions in ivory, in legacy formats (like modern) they work as in the past
So not to go all MtG-terms too much, once an effect is used, it's "on the stack" and where it came from is irrelevant for the sake of Reactions, until the Reaction has a specific trigger that looks for the source.
Like... Denkyu no Shiryo. He provides a reaction to make a Mantis personality cheaper. So if an Event let you search for and play a Mantis personality, you can react to that even though it's an Event, because the Ancestor doesn't care why it's coming into play.
it's much simplier. in l5r if someone will play wisdom gained you may play any reaction (if it exists), to searching, to puting card in hand, to resolving event - to literally everyting is on the cards effect
yes
Okay. I think I can get off the country bus there. If there are specific scenarios that are confusing, I'll ask, but the general rules seem very clear now.
I think I like it, it forces issues. If I had like, Changing the Game waiting in my Province, you could theoretically stop it by destroying the Province.
I've always liked "threat" mechanics.
Or force a usage when the other player really doesn't want to, but has to make a suboptimal play that's better than no play at all.
or all those Open: events
you may just wait for ops turn to launc them
like this and steal Imperial favor
Right right. 'Oops, no sending people home this turn'
or your op take favor to mill, but you steal his favor
and use it for
My rationale for rewording Avoid Fate and Forewarning differently despite them having the same trigger was that AF is, overall in its totality of effects, "no, not yet" and Forewarning is just "no", so it seemed the latter should have broader application.
Hello, everyone. I have a bit of an announcement. I've talked about this here before, but not in any great detail. I'm part of a team that's working on a new fan-made set for Legend of the Five Rings. I'd like to share our first design diaries here, and ask you for a small amount of input. We will be asking for more as we near completion of the project.
When I attempted it a few years ago was I couldn't get enough support to help with it. I'll be happy to help with this.
Awesome! We've decided on making a few changes, but overall I think the changes we're working with are worth it, and I look forward to having a broader discussion about it.
If I can ask, what's the impetus behind changing the card style? To ensure that it's clearly not official? I'd like to help, I am more of a story person than a card balance, but I can playtest and feedback for things like ease-of-understanding and use.
That is correct. I had someone working on new frames and new clan mons back when I tried to do it so that we would not have any issues with FFG / Asmodee. It was cover your butt situation. The group that continued the LCG unofficially changed the clan mons and frames too.
The throwback to the old frame is kinda cool.
Thatās cool, I was curious. And true, a good CYA
My original issue was just that the readily available frames I could find were agonizingly low resolution. So, I took it upon myself to try and make new frames. They were awful, so Yucess helped me out and got some designs that were better, even if they were still rather bland. However... all of that fell by the wayside when Self Based made a new set of frames with clear inspiration from the original cards that still incorporated modern design principles. That's what we're using today. The fact that they're not copywritten makes it easier to work with, but I would have been happy to push that problem until later if we had workable frames in the mean time.
That all being said, I recently found the pdfs of most of the unreleased Onyx cards. The images are not flattened, so the card frames are just available to be copied straight from them. I wish I had found that sooner, but I'm also very happy with the frames we have now, and we would have had to make new frames eventually anyway.
We have a fan person who worked on the LBS game put these together. I think they look awesome too.
That was Self Based. They're in this discord as well. And they have an LBS remastered edition that's already out and ready for play.
I have a set of blanks for playtest frames
Pretty
/wave
My goal with the design for the Rebirth Edition frames was to capture the artistry of the original edition card frames, but updated to what are modern templating standards, without going overboard and reinventing the wheel. I've been monkeying around with card layouts for over a decade now, between the Legend of the Burning Sands remaster and my work with Vampire: The Eternal Struggle, I feel like i was pretty succesful with my L5R retro-update
it should be noted that most of these frames have been updated further
also please excuse the weird double spaces. I need to clean my keyboard..
No worries about the spaces. :) I was asking to save a question later. I like these frames, and would like to see the updates, but no rush.
I applaud your work for the frames. That being said, not a fan of them. At least to me it looks like the frames are crushing/compacting the art in some images. The frames while colorful also look quite busy. Graphic design is hard and you wont please everyone. There is just something about your images that dont sit well for me.
I thought that at first, and then realized if I open the full image, those issues went away. The one that seemed off the most to me was A Terrible Oath, so I pulled out the card and compared, and it's almost exact.
And I wonder if the "busy" might be visual noise from the set border. I admit I had to kind of ignore it, and the frames themselves look good without them. The only thing I found a little off was the clan mons could be a bit more watermark-y, so when title overlaps, the title takes a stronger precedence.
But these would be easy to use, and even the noise is probably just enhanced by multiple cards touching and would be less prevalent when in a deck. Ivory promo, CoM, and HoR had great clear, crisp set borders, and I was disappointed they aren't revisited more. The highlights on the mechanics would make them easier to teach, which seems what a lot of what I do lately.
Maybe? I was looking at the image fully expanded when I made my observation and it did look kind of all squished together.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuXpczD_QIo
I've always loved the picture of that personality and she's a great Dragon personality. I have her in two decks. A Keeper I believe.
Not sure how to bring this up, but the Oracle is missing Ginawa from Scorpion Clan Coup. Would have been a fixed in the Lion Clan starter:
He is available on Sun and Moon however.
Just went looking for a copy that I had due to the flavor text on it.
ah k
And also trying to find my Lion and Dragon Ancestral Swords.
There's even no such version in Oracle
Talking about Ginawa
Oracle doesnt have plenty of starter reprints.
It had me wondering for a few years as to whether I had imagined it.
As i see it was problably version included in Lion SCC3 starter. As i said above, when AEG was reprinting some fixed cards in starters from earlier sets, they weren part of expansion (they werent available in expansion boosters, only in starters), but they got current frames.
Oracle is missing a lot of those
as technically they were just reprints, not new versions.
eg when in 2009 AEG was changing frames from samurai to new look of celestial, whole double bugged expansion Glory of the Empire was printed in new frames. Also starters were printed this way, but as they included some Samurai legal only cards, they also were reprinted in new frames. So there's rare sitation where some Samurai only legal cards have Celestial frames and they are in GotE starters only.
They are missing in Oracle
Interesting. Never knew that.
but there are excpeptions - just checkin cards like Peasant Vengeance
Sorry, PV was reprinted also in base Celestial
wrong example
All good. I understand the oversight, if that is the correct term, now.
here is list of fixed cards in GotE starters
some of those cards werent reprinted later in Celestial, and exists in new frames and with Samurai legality only
like Refugees
Personally i was looking for Supply Smugglers in CE frames for some Modern decks
and it's available in GotE starter ony
I am in the middle of rebuilding the decks from the backs of the 1st Ed RPG Way of <insert clan> books. Then looking to build decks through the different eras just to teach people how to play. I may end up trying them out on Sun and Moon as well in the future.
Don has wanted to include Starter Reprints, especially if they have unique variations of text, but it's a question of time and effort.
you always had some interesting cases with deck reprints; Soul of the Empire starters included a number of reprints with entirely new artwork, for example
and of course Crimson & Jade took a lot of previously Unaligned people and gave them Minor Clan affiliation and the Yoritomo's Alliance keyword
I need like 40 copies of the original kyuden kitsune
I'd like to build a Crane Dueling Honor/Dishonor Switch deck to try and bring to the Modern tournament at GenCon. (I'm still not totally sure if I'm going, but if I do, that's what I want to play)
As Long as itās not embassy of the crane I wonāt rage at you
well, if it's for Modern, I think it has to be Embassy of the Crane, doesn't it?
All Iām saying is Iām not responsible if I baby rage the entire match
Signed salty lion player
you're allowed to do that, but only if you don't win. If you do, then I'm calling shenanigans.
to this day I have petitioned Urbach for a playmat that was the Embassy artwork on fire with lion clan banners everywhere
Will there be a Learn To Play section of the GenCon area, or just the tourneys? I didnāt know if this was an awareness drive as well. :)
Folks are welcome to gather in the Pine Box area in any spare seats, you'll find plenty of l5r old hats there
Oh, I am an old hat. XD I was more thinking about ideas like, I have a friend or two that might be interested, but know nothing of the game. They are in-person style learners, and I won't see them until GenCon, thought it would be neat if they could learn there.
Any good places to find Crane Honor deck lists? I'm getting pulled in a lot of different directions with my brewing, and I would like some tips and ideas.
what format?
I'm playing Clan Wars through Lotus.
hmmm...here's my OBH Legacy Crane deck. Just change those outside the scope of that format.
you could just take a txt file from Decks folder of Sun and Moon and attach it to your message. Or just copy/paste.
I assume no Proxies allowed for modern event
And I have to rummage through boxes of stuff
Hmm. You need to ask Tournament Organizer.
I hope they allow some proxies. There's a ton of cards that are just stupidly hard to find.
I'm only concerned right now about MRP proxies. I have cards, but they're out of date. I think I'll make a visual spoiler for cards I bring.
@Brook Cunningham use your rules team clout to push the TO to allow Proxies
It's being discussed. š
Iāll bribe the TO with a crisp 5 dollar bill if thatās what it takes to get the dog to bite
Im sorry, i totally thought rise from the ashes was modern legal
Rise from the Ashes is illegal in most states, let alone tournament formats. š
Games gone soft. Canāt even have oppressive board lockdowns anymore
More like the opposite; game's gone into rigor mortis. ;P
Yet here we are swooning over the Chen for to play it at gencon one last tine
Hey, I was just taking issue with your metaphor, not your enthusiasm. š And if this is a big success, maybe it won't even be the last? :/
I hope to see some evening event slots in the future if it does
unofficial hardcore l5r tournament challenge anyone/anywhere/anytime have to defend your match
Some kind of store with everyone getting 5 Koku cards to start, and you can take other peopleās money when you win.
Speaking of, we did get a Ling style centre room at Hilton Garden Inn to use
Getting the squad back together again
Regarding the tournaments coming up in a few months, apparently the very first day will be Modern Format. The other two will be different Formats, and I'm not exactly sure what Limited Format play is. I know Legacy Format and play it all the time. I so wanted to go to the convention and bring three different clans to play those three days---Mantis, Phoenix, and Unicorn. Unfortunately I can't physically attend, at least not this time. I saw on their site that you can get a free badge and watch all the games you want to live, and they even mentioned you can play games via the internet during the event. Does that include playing games with those who are attending on Sun and Moon? That would be fantastic. I asked Mike if there was going to be an online internet tournament at the same time as the literal tourney and he said he never thought of that possibility before, but it would be an interesting or great idea for the future. I hope I can get a badge and play on Sun and Moon, even if it isn't an official tournament.
It's in description. Limited is "one edition", so in case of Gencon tourney there's Limited - Twenty Festivals. Just standard 40/40 decks with blue/black kanji of last official edition of the game.
When Modern was introduced it allowed proxies
When it became official alternate format and included into AEG Floor Rules, they removed this. So it's up to TO to decide.
So far the Modern event is two short of the minimum number of players necessary for it to even fire. Is it too soon to be concerned about this?
When's GenCon again?
August 3-6
Oh. That's plenty of time for more people to sign up.
Yeah I think that it will all go forward. I only wish I could physically attend.
Please remind again as we get closer. I'm wanting to play, but I have to see how some health things work out. If nothing else, I can donate $20 to give someone a by. :P
So for Limited one edition games, does that mean you can't have Fate cards or Personalities or Dynasty cards from editions other than Twenty F? Say, from Gold or Samurai or another earlier edition? Or limited ONLY to Twenty? Just wondering.
I checked Twenty F cards and didn't find many major, strong personalities for the Mantis, for example.
I hope that everything can work out for you so you can play the tourneys. That's really nice of you to offer to pay for someone else's entry. š
Yes. Its just a standard tournament format that was when game was sold. Just 'current' edition. Black and blue kanji.
But Mantis has excellent Stronghold in 20F. Mantis in 2015 won (for the first time ever) both Worlds Championships (Gencon) and Euro Championships (Greece).
So if I could attend, I would probably only build decks for two of the three tournaments, but not the Limited one. If I could, I would bring one Mantis deck and one Phoenix deck. And see how well they do.
I know the time slot is an issue for some as that is when folks will be in lines in vendor hall
Iām not so sure that the issue. Itās a four-day convention, after all. All the talk online led me to think that the Obsidian Hand Legacy tournament was the place to be, not Modern (which is the only format whose cardpool allows the deck I want to build to be competitive.) But the two events are tied in terms of ticket purchases. Only the Limited tournament is sure to run as yet.
Just a personal observation to me is all, could be a non factor, but generally avoiding Thursday morning slots is common. I know a few people that would have signed up but anticipate being in the Lorcana line
look if i don't try to greed lorcana am i even doing gencon right
thats how much i want to play this with folks is that i'm sacrificing my own personal gain
What does greed mean as a verb here? I have an idea, but I wanna make sure Iām following you.
instead of keeping it for myself
i'd def flip it early
think of wow terms when rolling for items
i dont NEED lorcana but the extra skrilla would be nice
I remember I once greeded someone without meaning to, because I didnāt know what the āNā stood for in the chat.
it be like that
Iāve more or less given up on Lorcana anyway. Iāll try lining up on Friday. If it sells out, it sells out.
i will use racial perk to run to line as door opens
Does having a press badge make it any easier? Iāve never had one before and canāt seem to find much literature on what I actually get to do with it.
i think the vendor badge helps
make up yuleballers card kingdom emporia LLC
and you should be fine
I have someone who could buy one for me, but $125 just to play a Lorcana a few weeks earlier doesnāt seem right to me.
those disneystans/early advancers will pay handsomely
like the guy offering 75K for the copy of the one ring to throw it into a live volcano
never underestimate the greed of others
I guarantee thatās just some big talk.
if i were to highroll and pull it
id' def see if they were bluffing or not
otherwise i'm hitting up post malone
Just be careful what you do with it. The ring has a will of its own.
that will is to fill my bank acct with some zeros
I think I have some sorting to do
That's a lot of Buffy:TVS.
Two 600 count and one 800 count boxes for Buffy.
I need to upgrade my storage. It is organized but the boxes are everywhere.
I apologize for nothing
Trying to sort is not easy when you fall behind
Although when we were playing back in college, an artist friend Drake made this for me, and it is fantastic:
I still have 6 5k count boxes in a cupboard that I need to add to the shelves. Games on there so far: L5R, Doomtown, Doomtown Reloaded, Spycraft , 7th Sea, Warlord, Buffy, Magic, Netrunner, Raw Deal and Cards Against Humanity.
CAH doesn't really count.
Now Raw Deal is an interesting one.
I never got into it, but it was popular at the local game shop because it was kind of a working class hick town (GM factory town). So I learned to play and borrowed other people's decks.
I've been thinking about it lately, and a few months ago even read up on what happened with the game, its expansions, and so on.
I played Raw Deal when I was in Cookeville for college (as a fun secondary game) and while I was in Florida. I was a big wrestling fan and the game was fun until the redesign.
I do miss Raw Deal. Just not as much as I do L5R. Still have my Matt Hardy V1 deck together.
I totally understand what you're talking about. I'm trying to sort/organise/clean my place too. One part at a time, but it will get done.
:baro_dote:
For me, one of the best L5R items I was able to buy on eBay is an Honor counter. I have always loved wolves and this emblem of a wolf (technically Toturi's Army) is the best design they ever did for Honor counters. The second best is the Unicorn emblem. I love German Shepherds because they look the closest to wolves of all the domisticated dogs. This thing is 22 karat gold and I guard it with my life.
I used to have one of those... I can't remember if it was Ninja, or something else. It's been so long.
But I know the 22 Karat gold ones. They were well made, and looked... elegant.
yes indeed
I seem to think that the YJA one was pretty decent, too. Though, to be fair, most looked pretty good.
Heh. I miss the old AoD YJA box.
I so dreaded playing against YJA. It generally meant it would be a hard match, and that a chunk of my deck would do nothing. I'd have to actually fight for my win, if I even got it.
Those decks were brutal.
Being able to ignore Honour loss was so big.
A good draw with a good deck full of Rares was a thing of beauty.
These were so awesome when they came out.
Shadowlands emblem. I remember those, though I never played against Shadowlands in the Kotei events. I had to widen the hole for my wolf with a reemer so that the numbers would show clearly
It was kind of a joke because... they didn't need one...
Oh yeah...Shadowlands doesn't
So you sit down with the top off, pull out your deck, and then drop the emblem on it
Can't gain or lose honor right? I built a Spider deck that doesn't have a single Shadowlands card in it, that can actually WIN on honor.
The original horde, yes. -19 honor, cannot gain or lose, cannot win or lose, cannot take political actions.
Imperial favor was an issue kinda, so they made The Dark Lord's Favor as a card
Not a huge issue, mind. Just like... a little.
Oh first time i've seen that. Yeah, to make up for the fact they can't use the Imperial. Nice actions
Scorpions and Crane also liked it. <.<
I have my Toturi's Army honor counter on my desk in front of me. Toturi's Army first, Lion Clan second.
Well, DLF was worded weird. You couldn't play its Open or Reaction abilities.
Nice. The Dragon emblem looks sloppily done and never really liked it myself. No offense to Dragon players. But I DO like the Dragon and what they can do. Phoenix emblem is pretty good. I also like the Crow for the Brotherhood, and I have that one also.
I know now with the clarity it wouldn't work, but I think in my area and tournaments the Foo hit it hard. Like 'Of course Horde players can use it, it's supposed to be for them.'
Centipede is a good mon, and of course the best one is Ratling.
Naga is good, too.
Need to see if there are 3D printer files for the old school honor counters. I now find myself with a need for one of each faction.
Unlikely, but I would be pleasantly surprised if there were.
Ironically for me, I would never get the Mantis emblem. Never. The insects look like some kind of creepy alien from outter space. They were not in the US originally, but were brought here by explorers who were exploring the Orient. Then they reproduced over here. The females kill and eat their mates after mating. But, I do love what hte Mantis clan does so I choose that one.
Fair point.
It kinda does.
Now, if they did a Yoritomo's Alliance one, or a Fox Clan one, sure.
yes I would LOVE to get a Fox emblem as well.
I actually found the whole Mantis/YA/Fox thing quite neat back then. Having a single "Clan", but with that drastic of a division that depending on the box, you couldn't run a whole bunch/most of your "Clan's" Personalities.
I like the idea of an Alliance too, but doesn't always work for what you want to do.
did we land on if proxies are going to be legal or not for the modern event?
