I recently bought quite a few cards from the last legal cycle (Twenty Festivals with a few sets before and after TF including Blackest Storm proxies) and am building decks to play casually with friends like a board game. I'm building the decks with 3 goals: each deck should be thematic of the clan, relatively simple to play, and relatively balanced against the other decks. Does anyone have any ideas that might be helpful?
Oracle of the Void #l5r
Messages from the Oracle of the Void #l5r Discord channel, copied for Oracle of the Void. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings and the rulebooks may differ.
I have recently built 4 decks from the 20F legality format and tested them against each other. The Phoenix and Unicorn are definitely top-tier decks from that arc, I also managed to make very strong Mantis and Dragon decks, but have done more testing of the Phoenix and Unicorn as they seem stronger. These are all thematic (Mantis and Unicorn military, Phoenix honor and Dragon enlightenment). I tried making some others but had some difficulty figuring out what the strongest deck type for the other clans is, the other clans have several possible themes but it is not clear what decks are capable of doing well against the top tier decks.
This is the Lion post EP Blitz i won local tourney with: Legality: Twenty_Festivals The Grand Halls of the Lion 2 Glimpse of the Unicorn 3 Ominous Revelation 2 Auspicious Arrival 1 The Heavens Are Watching 1 Shadow of the Dark God 2 The Blessing 3 Suana Dojo 3 Temple of Destiny 1 Forgotten Legacy 3 Developed Quarry 3 The Toil of Zokujin 3 Copper Mine 3 Voice of Experience 1 Akodo Kenaro - exp 3 Akodo Kenaro 3 Akodo Raikitsu 3 Matsu Akio
3 Rewards of Experience 3 Die on Your Feet 3 Fight on Your Back 3 Courage Beyond Question 3 The Sun Returns 2 Wedge 3 Imperial Summons 3 Way of the Crab 3 Victory Through Deference 3 Shield of the Honored Soul 3 Weathered Armor 3 Fubatsu Blade 3 Ensorcelled Longsword 1 Ring of Air 1 Ring of Earth
Also there's this passive ancestor honor OR kitsu dueling
maybe kitsu dueling isn't a thematic stuff, but it just exploits high chi lion shugenja
Awesome! I'm going to look this over
Idea is to aggressive cycle for any Personality 1st round, especially for Matsu Akio. Then buy Holding or two. If there's none, just go for Legacy. Drop anything from Provinces except at least 1 Personality and cheap 1 for 1 Holding or The Blessing. 2nd turn buy Peronality, maybe with additional Holding. Third turn attack depends of board situation and hand. For most time you'll have to equip item and swing. Combo of Shadow of the Dark God (Permanently -1PS) and Fight on Your Back (5F as Tactical Advantage!) sometime will allow to destroy Province on cost of 1 card from hand. If there's an Defender you have option to bow with Imperial Summons (that's why there's Auspicious Arrival). If there's Ominous Blessing, just search for The Heavens Are Watching to flip up all Provinces and prepare for best sniping. Destroying one or two Provinces creates huge advantage, and if your hand is empty or weak, you can easily sacrifice a turn to buy Holdings for more resources. Count carefuly number of your guys in play and discard, ther're only 10 of them!
This Lion deck is great, it really plays to the thematic strength of Lion with speed as a priority. Just wondering if it is a little vulnerable to Progressive and Breaking the Rhythm?
If someone plays Progressive, Weathered Armor is your only hope
Breaking the Rhythm may wreck your plan unless you stop it with The Sun Returns and sacrifice your guy with Way of the Crab
or topdeck into Ring of Air
If you play with TBS you may replace Raikitsu with him
and try to fit Jade Works
Interesting, is TBS the un-released set?
One of them, yes.
It is the most ready-to-be-released of them all, being the next expansion due to release, the last one before Onyx base set.
Onyx base set was... close to ready as well. After that, 1-2 expansions past Onyx were also designed and had begun PT, but were not as refined or close to print as TBS or Onyx were.
Cool, is this available in virtual format? I guess it was never printed
The ready-to-print and nearly-ready-to-print PDFs of TBS and Onyx have leaked online here and there. Not totally sure where to find them easily myself. @kempy_nezumi might have handy links.
The Blackest Storm is on L5R Wiki. Just google it.

Does anyone have any advice on an Enlightenment deck for 20F? I have been using the following, but not sure if there are stronger builds?
Legality 20F The Fortified Monastery of the Dragon Mahatsu Sensei
Mirumoto Shikei, the Laughing Dragon Mirumoto Hitomi, Seven Thunder 3 Mirumoto Higaru exp 3 Mirumoto Reiji 3 Mirumoto Konoe 3 Mirumoto Hikuryo 3 Togashi Yayoi 3 Mirumoto Akifumi 3 The Blessing Counting House Forgotten Legacy 3 The Ikoma Halls 3 Gold Mine 3 Suana Dojo 3 Spirit’s Essence Dojo 3 Ashigaru Farmland
Rings of Air, Fire, Earth, Water, Void 2 Hidden Machinations 3 Awed Witness 3 Avenge Your Slights 3 Singing Blade 3 Ensorcelled Longsword 3 Stockpiled Weapon 3 Sudden Movement 3 Priestly Feud 3 Valiant Defense 3 Walking with the Water 3 Way of the Dragon 3 Lookout Post
Would "Discovering the Daisho of Water" be a good replacement for Die on Your Feet?
Sounds good. Its unopposed straightening but has 3FV instead of 4 of Die on Your Feet.
Worth testing.
this one looks like kind of military-enlightenment switch that starts with Ring of Air
This is a something different, a deck that got 3rd at last Euro (In Greece) in 2015. Piloted by Gunnar i believe:
Legality: Twenty_Festivals 1 The Fortified Monastery Of The Dragon 1 Mahatsu Sensei
1 Ring of Air 1 Ring of Earth 1 Ring of Fire 1 Ring of the Void 1 Ring of Water 2 Open Ground 2 Bridging the Gap 2 Walking with the Water 2 Show Me Your Stance 3 Way of the Dragon 2 Hidden Strength 3 My Lord's Favor 2 Lookout Post 2 The Path of Wisdom 3 Block Supply Lines 2 Progressive 2 Treachery and Deceit 1 Determined Challenge 2 False Trail 2 Accepting the Choice 2 Victory Through Deference 2 New Factors 1 Feinting Maneuver
1 Wisdom Gained 3 Auspicious Arrival 2 Questionable Market 3 Temple of the Heavenly Crab 3 Gold Mine 3 Suana Dojo 3 The Ivory Courtroom 1 Forgotten Legacy 2 Remote Temple 3 Mirumoto Futoro 3 Mirumoto Hikuryo 2 Togashi Yayoi 2 Togashi Ogure 3 Togashi Taiki 3 Togashi Korimi 1 Hida Kozan, Voice of the Empress 2 Mirumoto Rikiya 1 Mirumoto Hitomi, Seven Thunder - exp2CW
It also may try to make military pressure, but this time it probably starts with Ring of Water (or Earth). False Trail is nice surprise card.
btw, heres playlist of games with this similiar lion deck in some snm tourney https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhFrn2f30ZY&list=PL9qwwEhE0R_xPoUgihMflQxUoY0bwtT
What app is this
Sun and Moon.
It's pretty great for L5R.
Also here's also Gunnar's enlightenment deck against my some Unicorn Dragons jank 😄 https://youtu.be/7wZjxSikrYg
SnM framework is built around Ivory/Twenty Festivals ruleset, but you may use it for earlier stuff. Here's eg Samurai era tournament from perspective of Tempered Resurrection Lion : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9qwwEhE0R_yyua6oasWH2_dIPh1Y8dsw
This Spell in combination with Katsuko may result with solid discounts
Oh man, watching this videos now make me urge to play some L5R again now 😄
And Soul of Katsuko was going to return in Onyx so with legality of Death of the Wings there was time to return of Samurai-like shug/tactical toolbox
Thanks, I have built a physical copy of the Lion Blitz you discussed and am looking forward to testing it. However, I was tempted to and have splashed several copies of The Samurai Caste Divides and Progressive. This gives a free 4FV card in hand each time and also has the potential to discard the Progressive played by Phoenix decks and get a province flip as well, possibly as part of a chain with Ominous Revelation. Have you tried this variation?
as meta choice - it's ok. my reminescence of late 20f arc was that most deck were military ones, only phoenix got izuna turbo honor. and it even didnt play progressive becasue it was so fast and didn't require such defence
and military decks like mantis played
Hello, I will need help to make a legal diamond deck with the stronghold City of blood, I have no idea to build this deck. 😢
This card can be negated by Sudden Storm or Walking with the Water however which are also absent terrains. Although I don't actually use terrains in my phoenix deck at the moment but the potential is there if accessible terrain is a problem.
I haven't had time to test the Lion Blitz yet but I made a few alterations and I think my Phoenix (which is based on the deck that came second in Worlds 2015) would be a match for it: Phoenix 20F legality The Majestic Temple of the Phoenix 3 Asako Hiribe 3 Asako Kazuki 3 Carpenter Shrine 1 Coronation Festival 1 Counting House 3 Defensive Memorial 1 Forgotten Legacy 3 Isawa Genma 3 Isawa Kaisei 3 Isawa Kamiko 1 Isawa Norimichi, Elemental Master exp2 1 Isawa Tadaka, Seven Thunder exp2CW 3 Silver Mine 3 Temple Fortress 3 Temple of Destiny 1 The Abbot 1 The Samurai Caste Divides 3 Shinsei’s Last Hope exp
3 Block Supply Lines 3 Breaking the Rhythm 3 Lookout Post 3 Mark of Heaven’s Favor 2 Progressive 1 Ring of Earth 3 See the Many Faces 3 Seeking the Way 3 Shadowlands Sickness 3 Usurpation 1 Ward of Air 3 Wheels Within Wheels 3 Words of Consecration 3 You Walk With Evil 3 Your True Nature
I recall playing in mid Celestial Edition, and really enjoying the pacing of the game, where the whole feel of the game was to activate units in the right order, working out the best way to spend cards efficiently, investing when you think you can win, and not investing in battles that would be too costly.
The end of CE got quite nuts with cards like Know No Fear, and cards that had like, 3 modes on them that were just catch-all cards to prevent anything short of a kill action. When those cards were in the game, it felt real bad. But mid-CE was, I feel, a good place.
I was wondering though, if anyone had some deck lists of that era? Circa like, The Plague War or Empire At War.
I wanted to play that era with a friend and... Well, I guess I wanted to see if I'm just remembering it with rose colored glasses, or if it actually was as good as I remember.
It's also with Izuna Sensei?
what clans?
Anyway i recall middle CE as breeder (gobo or not) against everything.
Let's try, Scorpion, Crane, Lion and Dragon.
Hmm... Might be a good idea to try some goblin zombie Spider... I recall they went in and out of fashion.
I did try to build a goblin deck that didn't play breeder... That was actually quite a lot of fun.
Breeder was over the top so they had to errata some stuff like this small Goblin (increasing cost) or Regions that provides discount for shadowlands or give mass force bonuses. And also Shameful Tactics
base set
reprint in CE15
there were battles like 100+ force against 100+ force
Yikes... Yeah, I think the meta I played in the store I was at just refused to play breeder
Even when I saw it, it was nowhere near that good.
That was also the era of Low Stance vs Game of Sincerity

@kempy_nezumi What about Lion Tacticians with big weapons? Ie Raemon + Rising Sun Blade + Countermove?
I love Seven fold Palace. It was always my favorite over any other CE stronghold... Even when several others were objectively better.

I missed out on the latter half or maybe 2/3rds of Celestial. Those look relatively fun.
So with FL stuff like Consideration or Creating Order. Also BK xp helps this deck a lot because of hand mill.

Cool. Looking through folder i found what i was looking for so long - 2011 Scorpion HMD denial blitz that got second in our Kotei. File was named "escorpiono -" instead just Scorpion or SC- like my other files.

Of course theres a typo with this Yoritomo's Guidance
Probably that was a Celestial that wasnt in database and someone put it as placeholder
maybe this one?
Thank you! I'll try them out and see if it's as I remember it.
Also i'm not sure whats the point of The New Order here. Must ask a guy who piloted it. Probably another typo.
Main strategy was just buy a guy first turn and snipe best province. And repeat. Bayushi Keirei is best target as he has 5F. Later in the arc also arrived another 5F ninja.
He's from BtD, so before Forgotten Legacy.
People didn't know this deck, and surprise was main factor. Top 4 game agains big-weapons lion was lost becasue lion player was really afraid of this:
And played really safely.
Both players were from same playgroup so both knew their decks very well.

Just put the Lion deck together in TTS.
I don't suppose there's a deck builder for TTS...
that would sure as heck make this easier...
hmm... it might be a good idea for me to try and build one if it doesn't already exist.
I could use the practice.
No, Izuna sensei is powerful but limits GP so instead this deck has a shadowlands punishment theme which includes Shinsei's Last Hope exp. It also uses Temple Fortress for extra speed. This deck is always crossing on at least the 6th turn (as the deck in Worlds did https://www.strangeassembly.com/2015/l5r-world-championships-reportdecklist-james-matthews-t2-top-phoenix), and is a very powerful anti-military deck which has a combination of both speed and power that is unusual in 20F.
I see. Izuna has in-built Shadowlands punishment and it's always active and ready to work and ready to trigger other cards. Gold reduction isnt big problem if you just going to honor as fast and play cheapest guys. also Izuna is awesome meta against other passive decks as you force them to attack and kill their most valuable guys.
Later during last Kotei season James won some tourneys with Izuna honor bomb and confirmed this sensei is not fair.
Anyway, some people who played post-sale siggested to ban Izuna or/and also change whole Honor keyword mechanic. As printed it allows to play multiple copies of Honor cards to modify honor gains/loses, but some playtesters confirmed that during playtests they were using only "once per trigger" restriction.
Thanks, this supports my decklist. Izuna merely causes resentment and is not necessary for the Phoenix to have a dominant deck. Honor cards are also not necessary. I see your point about Izuna making things easier against passive decks but I think this deck is better at defence than other passive decks and therefore more likely to survive the military dominant environment in 20F, making meta against other passive decks less relevant.
I may have bought a box of 20 featival starters and 7 boxes of boosters today.
I'm still sitting on several sealed booster boxes (including a sealed box of Lotus Edition)
The goal is to introduce the game to my regular board game group. We'll start off with picking two starters each and divvy up a box's worth of boosters each time we play
I plan on doing something similar with my group but using emperor gempukku starters.
There's something primal and cathartic about opening packs that I miss.
Opening a pack of cards is a surefire dopamine hit
Do it with a friend and play Suicide.
Who is Diagotsu Kanpeki an experienced version of? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
He's an xp version of a holding, iirc
Oh! I saw the retainer, but I wasn't certain. Thank you. <3
Np!
I'm trying to generate a list of all the unaligned ninja in the game, but I don't think I can do a better search than below. If I isolate to just unaligned with keyword ninja, it gives me like ten cards. I'm pretty certain it's because all ninja are technically part of the Ninja clan, right? If I leave out the unaligned tag, I get 65 instead of 72.
I can just ignore the 'includes other clans' personalities if this is hte best list.
Well, neither.
It depends on the edition. Ninja is only considered a Clan in Jade Arc.
Otherwise, it's a keyword to be used as a feature, and appears on Scorpion and/or Shadowlands and/or Spider Clan Personalities and other cards.
In Legacy every Personality with Ninja keyword has Clan Alignment to Ninja faction. Same for every Monk being part of Brotherhood of Shinsei faction. So lierally in Legacy there's no "Unaligned" Ninja as every Personality with Ninja keyword is Ninja Clan/Faction.
Try use "All" field
Thank you :)
Somewhat related: I've noticed that if you do a search for shadowlands personalities with ninja keyword or ninja personalities with shadowlands keyword you get two different sets of results
Not sure if that's what it's supposed to do or not?
If i set Shadowlands as a "Clan" i got only Strongholds and Senseis
No Personalities
You are correct of course, I am misremembering what I did, but I remember I was trying to make it show me a list of all personalities that were both ninja and shadowlands and kept getting different results depending on how I did it
Oracle doesnt show Spider Shadowlands Ninja Personalities as "Ninja" Faction. Weird.
It still shows Scorpion Ninja as "Ninja" faction.
Does it show Spider Ninja and Shadowlands Ninja correctly? Maybe it’s all three together being wonky?
If you do personalities from Clan ninja with keyword Shadowlands it only gives four results
When it should spit out a whole bunch
Yep. There's something weird with Shadowlands.
Probably because of taint
Hate it when ninjas get in my taint
The ninjas are hiding in the database, very in character
Yeah, if I just do Ninja clan Personalities, And then search through the list for Shadowlands, I only get Bayushi Aramoro KYD, Shadow Beast, and the two Shadow Dragons. If I search Spider Clan Ninja, I get 27 and 25 have Shadowlands. Deinitely ninja being up to no good.
Shadowlands isn't a clan alignment.
(and never has been)
the strongholds/senseis are there because they kinda function as strongholds for that faction.. but they literally only work on personalities as a card effect, not a rulebook effect.
Yes, but if you choose "Ninja" faction Oracle doesnt show Ninja Personalities with Shadowlands keyword
well... not exactly.
the newer stuff printed after ninja wasn't a clan didn't get ninja added as a clan.
Bryan was adamant about that.. and my hands were tied at the time.
it's best for now to search for stuff like ninja as keywords, not clans
No, only Spider Ninja are absent. Because eg post Jade Scorpion Ninjas are listed under Ninja faction
If you filter by Ninja faction you will get all Scorpion Ninjas as well
but zero Spider
not all... there are a lot still missing.
type:personality, keyword:ninja, clan:scorpion has 114 hits. clan:ninja is only 66
Ah, ok. So just some Ninjas has Ninja faction in database, and some don't
yeah
someone put in an issue if there's not one already...
i have to run a big query to fix all that without busting things.
design made various changes through time that made it harder to define how to translate keywords into things like clan as well.
"crab clan champion" vs. "crab clan", etc.
and rulebook effects that tried to make it so you couldn't split up pieces in keywords, even though at previous times, they were intentionally merged.
made it difficult to streamline the software side
@Brook Cunningham did a heroic job fixing a lot of things.. but in the end, he's still one dude and human
IMO... we need someone who can step up and make a unified ruleset that simplifies some of the baggage (stuff like the timing of ongoing effects vs. others by minute differences in the english they use), and could be played with different arcs and be close enough.
then we can optimize the database towards that one ruleset
Are some cards tagged for their art? I did an All search for zokujin, and it brought up Matsu Kaori. Her card doesn't mention zokujin anywhere, but there's one in her art.
Same thing with Yoritomo Kinshikirai
All search searches all text fields, so it's in flavor somewhere probably on the others
There isn't anything that calls out art specifically
I thought that too, but she only seems to have one version.
There might be a designer note buried in the data
Okie doke. :)
This is my dream
I'm not sure that would be achievable at this point, to be honest. There's so many cards, and so many competing ideas...
I'd say make sure every arc has an in-arc method for dealing with all the different rules, and then make sure to declare which arc's rules you're using when you sit down for a game. Treat each arc like its own format.
That's easy.
What's hard is going across several arcs, especially toward the end where card design began to heavily reflect the massive rule changes.
I really don't know what you are talking about 🙂 You want play X arc - use X arc cards and X arc ruleset. You want to play all cards - use Obsidian Hand or AEG Legacy ruleset. Or use Big Deck ruleset with standard deck construction.
I believe that newest ruleset works better with older cards than old ruleset with modern cards. You want to ignore Ivory? Ok, so ignore it, stop at Emperor and use all cards with Emperor ruleset (that's something like Big Deck tries to do).
Oracle wordings that try to keep original intents made by @Brook Cunningham help a lot. All you need now is just to spot some bugs and report. There's no better way atm.
I'd like to see rules for older arcs using newer cards. Where do I find the original intent wordings?

Specifically, this guy doesn't really work when duelists don't focus first.
And it will never do. Because Celestial dueling was different than in any other edition. So you use Celestial and play him in Celestial environment or forget about him in Legacy unless you want cheap 3GC duelist and you play lot of Chi boosting items.
In Legacy this guy is just poor one.
We can't make any Personality that was solid in his time also solid in Legacy. It's impossible.
Becasue of cardpool.
With keywords that were used in many edition it's just safier to use most recent ruleset for them. It would be a mess if you eg use Fear differently for cards printed in Gold, Lotus and Ivory.
And about original intent it's more about generic effects (like unopposed moving, and old Rule of Presence and Location) or being repeatable or not (for cards abilities printed before Lotus).
Ignoring the Battle action, which Hoturi does that make a stronger duelist in a 'everything' ruleset, Experienced or Inexperienced?
Double chi I would think
Probably old Hoturi as Double Chi works as mechanical keyword in all Legacy rulesets i know
You may play both and buy cheaper "new" Inexperienced Hoturi and then overlay him with "old" Experienced 😉
The new one has a battle kill action though... I expect it would depend on the kind of deck you're building. If you're playing classic Crane that never defends, the old one is a rockstar. But if you actively want to engage in combat, I expect the new one would be better.
I guess if any other factor is permitted, like equipment, Inexp would be more likely to win, since Duelist would trump the Double Chi unless the action requires them to focus, like Demonstrating Technique. If a character with Duelist goes against someone like Isawa Tsuke, and declares a strike immediately, Tsuke's face down card still counts because it only 'acts' as a focus, but is not a 'focus action', right?
Yes. But if Tsuke will challenge any Duelist, it wouldn't be smart idea to strike. As in Legacy Duelist just wins draws.
Oracle: Fire Repeatable Limited, bow: Set aside a card from your hand face-down to challenge another player's target Personality. If the duel does not occur, discard the set-aside card. Otherwise, that card acts as a focused card, and you may not otherwise focus, during the duel. Destroy the loser; Tsuke will not be destroyed as a consequence of this duel.
Trying to put together a bunch of decks for my friends and I to play.
I basically build them with cards from Jade-Lotus. With a few exceptions for especially exciting Champions. But I want to make sure that the game feels balanced. I don't include more than one Double Chi character per-deck, and I'm not sure if I want to use original focus rules, or the focus pools.
Is there anyone else that plays this format/has tried to?
Very hermetic environment. If website like L5RSearch would be still alive you would just grab Legacy decks published there around Lotus. But nowadays i think it's really hard to find resources for decks made from such cardpool.
What sites do people use to buy cards? I have been using eBay, but there are still some gaps I'm trying to fill.
If I'm in the wrong place, or if there's a better one, please let me know.
Depends what kind of cards you want, and in what condition. ImperialBlock.com has good stock, and is Kyoteru's site.
I am slow though. A bit overextended in life right now
I completely understand! But if I can save on international shipping fees, it's worth the wait.
You definitely have some of the cards I'm looking for.
Docangst, playccg, padisl5r
Are other options
Anyone know approximately when DocAngst will be back?
@Jeff Williamson ?
I have done what I think you're talking about, which is filled out a collection of Legacy decks for my own amusement or to make other people use, I tried to cover most of the factions and the major themes and balance them out against each other, keeping in mind that I'm not a millionaire so I don't have 15 copies of evil portents or luxurious silk or whatever
Naturally biased towards the sets when I was most into the game and have the most cards from already, but I used Oracle and some of the sites mentioned to fill in some weak spots
I also made a Imperial Palace of otosan Uchi deck and a sunrise keep ronin deck
Niiice, Dark Path of Shadow.
That's one of my goals for this year, to get enough Clan Wars and Jade Arc stuff to make a few decks. The CE15 reprints really help.
Gotta use Dark Path of Shadow
Jade Arc is when I started. I have a bag of nothing but Jade era decks and then I have another bag of nothing but Obsidian Hand Legacy decks.
Ninja Honor Control was my favorite deck back then. I never ran it in tournaments though because I wanted to take part in the Crane's storyline.
I was SO HAPPY when the Crane got the Harriers. I had so much fun at Koteis with that deck. I haven't altered any card in the deck even now that I build more legacy decks.
Hmm. There's an awful lot of 2GC Holdings that have Imperial in their title, so the Palace of Otosan Uchi would make free.
Yes Palace of Otosan in Legacy has a a job dropping gold scheme, where you can bring out all kinds of free holdings
and 3 of them can be played as open actions and takes the imperial favor no less
Throw in some Imperial followers while you're at it too, it's all gravy
Mmhmm. Ditto for Imperial Personalities.
Totur's Army ruled
There's actually some acceptable Imperial Personalities. Mostly around becoming free, but also doing something. Or being cheap Force/Chi.
Anyone have a recommendation for a good strategy for a pacifist Phoenix deck?
What's the win condition?
If you are doing honor, Air spells like Seeking the Way, Shielded by Tempest, Words of Consecration, Flight of Doves, and other cards like Castle of Water, Isawa Kaisei are great
I don't have a win condition in mind yet.
If Enlightenment is reasonably attainable with Phoenix, I think the guy I'm building the deck for would probably enjoy that.
He's a combo player in Magic. So I want something with card draw and strong synergies.
I don't know that Phoenix were ever really great at Enlighenment, even when they built cards specifically for it. :( Your best chance of Earth is sending people home, and Air wouldn't be terrible if you're the only one even trying for the Favor. Fire is dummy easy, as is Void.
Chuck in a Hanabi?
Heh.
Phoenix was bloody amazing at Enlightenment. With Finding the Harmony. 😉
I can see how that would work... if you can rotate the Rings in just the right way.
Well. Finding the Harmony counted toward Enlightenment originally. And they used Agasha Kusabi + Dragon Tattoo (pre-MRP, where you could give him an infinite amount of 0 Fire Tokens, thereby playing Air over and over).
FETA -> Finding Enlightenment Through Air.
Huh. I might build that into the deck...
Feta was insane fast
Would you like a decklist? I have one for FETAMo5, in both "Open", meaning Clan Wars and Jade, and Strict Jade.
I would love that.
I forget: does FtH work atm?
checks Oracle
Yeah, "While [the ring] remains in play, it does not count towards an Enlightenment Victory."
So, no FETA.
Yeah, after the MRP in Gold Edition they neutered it.
Dragon Tattoo also got neutered.
I mean, it's still useful for a single play of Ring of Air, but that's it, once per Personality, basically, unless you wait three turns.
Um... Asako Nagami seems broken without her errata. Was she errataed immediately?
Those rings wouldn't count for Enlightenment
They had to enter via their own text for that iirc
Got it. It's so weird which things were in the rulebook in one edition, and printed on cards in others.
Asako Nagami is Samurai edition legal. As you quoted from Samurai rulebook, her ability don't allow to win by enlightenment, because Ring enters play from thei ability, not from their own texts.
And that was true at least since Samurai.
So all current Legacy formats (including Obsidian Hand, Modern etc.) follow this rule "by its own text".
So in Legacy formats, can The House of Tao no longer win by Enlightenment, then?
Just checking. TOH has additional note: "Enlightenment A player wins immediately by controlling five Rings, each with a different element keyword (Air, Earth, Fire, Water and Void). All rings must be put into play by their own text; this is with the exemption of Rings that entered play before the starting player is determined (See Play of Game)."
Sorry, my fault. I forgot that in Ivory/20F (so also in Modern) they removed "by it's own text" from Enlightenment victory.
ENLIGHTENMENT VICTORY # A player wins immediately by controlling five Rings with five different element keywords (Air, Earth, Fire, Water and Void). “Enlighten” means to win by Enlightenment.
So in TOH and Big Deck - "by it's own text" In AEG Legacy and Modern - "just put rings into play in any way"
as in Ivory Dragon got this Stronghold:
Niiice, Classic Simpsons.
After the "by its own text" part got removed from Rules, I did do my best in the Oracle to add "this doesn't count for Enlightenment" to any cards (like Asako Nagami above) that put Rings into play which don't have it because the "by its own text" part was in the Rulebook at the time they were printed; let me know if I missed any. 🙂
Rob Hobart:
"AEG was going to publish a big fancy Axis & Allies-style L5R wargame in 2008 or so. Huge box, a ton of miniatures, multi-player game with potential expansions, all that sort of thing. IIRC, "Art of War" was the working title but it's been quite a few years so I could be mis-remembering it. Due to issues with the production contract in China (this was AEG's first attempt to work in the Chinese manufacturing world), a currency fluctuation drove the production price too high and got cancelled. The only bit of it that ever saw the light of day was the game-board design, which was used as the map in the 4th Edition core rulebook."
Art of War?
"Yep. Like I said, I edited the rules document, as well as the text for the action cards that would have been included. I was told the final designs for the miniatures had also been approved. (They were going to be larger than the typical 25mm style to allow for more detail and coolness.) A huge disappointment that it never got made."
"They were already starting up with the "let's do boardgames" plan back then (though it took a few years to get properly rolling) and this was actually AEG's first attempt to produce a boardgame of their own in China. I always wondered why they didn't go back a few years later and try again since all the design and development was already finished. My suspicion is that the production contract was some kind of horrible exclusive thing that prevented this. (They did say later that they "learned a lot" about making stuff in China from the Art of War failure.) But ultimately that's just speculation on my part -- only Zinser, Rowland, and Lapore know for sure, and since they're still making boardgames in China and need to maintain their corporate relationships over there I doubt they'll want to say anything about it."
Hello does anybody know and clarify how Hida Yui works https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,%23cardid=3245
Thanks for you help
When Hida Yiu successfully comes into play, you use his Reaction to target another personality with lower Force (probably 4 or less). That Personality bows and does not straighten at the next opportunity to do so (normally their next straightening phase).
Thanks the thing who is bothering me it s « until he leaves play » , I would remove this sentence it s confusing
I'm pretty certain it's to prevent weird mechanical rules. If that personality dies and comes back, they were trying to make certain the effect doesn't persist.
Thanks for the clarification
The alternative would have been, "... Bow him. Negate his next straightening, unless he leaves play first."
That s better wording. Do you see any card interaction to justify the last part of your sentence ?
Someone could sacrifice him to Besieged and then use Resurrection to bring him to play again. Without "unless he leaves play" when he would be bowed again he still wouldnt straighten again.
Or he couldnt straighten after playing Feign Death.
That s a lot of conditions . I won’t bother about this or imagine such thing when I play open format 😅
