With the release of 3D, will there be a rules document that's a comprehensive A to Z for players unfamiliar with the game?
Onyx Lives #rules-questions
Messages from the Onyx Lives #rules-questions Discord channel, copied for Oracle of the Void. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings and the rulebooks may differ.
I'll be working on one.
As a task I've assigned myself
Is this something you can use help with? I have a lot of free time, and I would really like to see one by the 25th to get my friends (back) into the game.
Probably
I have a little question, while we're working on the 3D rules booklet, about Terrains.
As the rule on Terrains is slightly changing: Wouldn't it be logical (I know it's not traditional) to have the rulebook action be Engage rather than Battle?
I mean picking the place to fight seems more of an engage thing than a middle of the battle thing
Also question about Lobbying: does the bowing personality once again require at least 1PH?
@Jeff Williamson
Also other than the "New Rokugan", what will be the names of the other Winds?
That will be revealed during the preview cycle, I assure you.
Yes, but would like to get the rules booklet out by the 25th also
I would just note we have a datasheet prepared of all 3D rules updates we will be releasing, and our rules guru @Brook Cunningham is also working on something related to updated rules.
[3D] can I give my bowed tactician a force bonus with Tactical Advantage?
Games not even out yet bro
I would assume no but the rule hasn't changed since ShE, so whatever is the rule there.
In ShE the answer is no. Tactical abilities may only be taken by unbowed tacticians that haven't activated a tactician ability.
Dont know how it works in 3D
Same
We would have noted in our article about rules changes if it changed.
[3D] Gates of Persistence: I have a couple of questions - first, if the other player targets my hero but they have no cards in hand, is the action negated? Secondly, if my hero is unopposed, can they still gain Elite from the battle action?
1. No.
2. Yes.
[3d] Nobori Raiu: If I and my opponent both have this weapon at a battlefield, does the attacker or defender get first action? And how does it relate to other effects that seem to give first action such as Akodo Yosuke?
1. Probably the Attacker. The active player chooses what order effects with the same trigger happen, so they would more than likely choose their own to go last, giving them the first action.
2. Most other such actions are Engage actions. Since Nobori Raiu triggers just before the Combat Segment begins, it happens after any/all Engage actions and thus trumps them all.
What sets arenlegal for three dynasties? Just the new set or any of the old sets? Thank you 😊
Only the "base set" of 3 Dynasties will be available in the standard format
But tourneys are tourneys, and this is a fan made set so do what you want haha
Thats great thanks, looking forward to the release
I wanted to double check that Stormheart works the way it used to. If I challenge a dishonored personality, they can't refuse, their stat is zero, and focusing adds zero (since PH can't be raised while dishonored). Is that correct?
Focus would still add to the dueling stat
I thinkm
In the past it didn't.
Ill wait for Mr rules
It doesn't work the way it used to because dueling doesn't. Focusing does not add a direct bonus to the stat.
Thanks
Ah, ok. Thanks.
Does the Scorpion box make it so I can sub chi for personal honor? Wording is odd as it's not checking my ph per se
No. The Rulebook is checking the stats for duels, not the action.
Thanks didnt think it worked but wanted to be sure
For White Tower, does the shugenja need to be unbowed/straight (whichever word)?
Nope.
[3D] If Naka Kansaku copies Jade Sun's Judgment (spell) ability, does he have to destroy himself as a cost? it says "destroy this spell"?
Sounds like yes but let's see what the experts say
Yes. Copying an ability with a “self reference” effect makes the new source the new self. So Kansaku would destroy himself for that specific Open action
This makes sense otherwise it would be a persistent open kill action like Matsu Hiroru exp2
a player While Technogashi got the answer entirely correct, I think I should also mention, in this similar vein, Spells with the phrase "Bow this Shugenja" as a cost in their abilities' Constraints, while they can be copied, they cannot be used by Kansaku at all. This phrase is not self-referential, so it does not change, but that also means its meaning does not change either. It is shorthand for "Bow [the Shugenja to which this is attached]". Therefore, Kansaku cannot simply bow himself to pay the cost, he would have to bow a Shugenja "to which he is attached". Since he's a Personality himself and cannot be attached to anything, he cannot pay the cost to use the ability.
Thanks for clarifying this, I would have got this entirely wrong as I assumed the opposite. So he is mostly useful for the Rings.
He's also good for most Spells. The majority bow themselves for their actions, which he can do; the ones that bow their Shugenja are only a few.
I had the right answer for the wrong reason so this was needed
Quick Question: Do all attack abilities (melee or ranged) require a target?
Yes
What is a "Raid" battle?
From the Onyx/ShE Rules Datasheet:
Thank you! This is so new 😄
No worries! 🙂 It's actually a bit of a rework of a mechanic of the same name introduced in mid-Diamond Edition.
So with most events now, do they trigger on reveal?
yeah, they do seem that way
Specifically, Events trigger when revealed at the start of the controller's turn
so you can keep them?
and just wait if they flip during a turn?
Yes
no they auto resolve (or auto enter play)
Not if they flip outside the start of the turn.
Well yes if they reveal at an other moment, no if they are revealed in a province at the start of your turn.
Triggering them at the start of the turn is non-optional
a player a player If an Event is revealed in a Province at a time other than the beginning of its player's turn, it will sit there and wait to resolve until its player's next turn starts (unless it's gotten rid of somehow before that time). Events only resolve at the start of their player's turn, whether revealed then or already face-up.
i meant to include at start of turn, but i didn't say that explicitly, but thanks for saying that. basically they work the way old events used to (which I am not a fan of - i really liked events that resolved as Opens)
because of just questions like this
But then they're basically just Strategies in the Dynasty
so what?
(action phase)
Events should feel a little outside your control.
eh
The problem with events as action is that they allow for really fast cycling through the Dynasty deck, if combined with a couple of reveal (all) cards in provinces type effects. This allows one to set up very reliant combo decks.
are MCA members part of a specific clan now or do they count as unaligned?
The MCA is its own Clan/Faction in 3D. They count as Aligned, to it.
thanks
But in Legacy, they would have both Clan Alignments?
No one's really taken any initiative to integrate Legacy and unprinted sets, but yes, for the ones that have a "Legacy" Clan. Just like Scorpion Ninjas and Dragon Monks.
how does this work if the opponent actually does raid you?
It doesn't interact with Raids at all. The relation between a non-Raid Attack and the required Assignment is implicit. Doing the latter outside the former does not absolve your opponent from the requirement during it, nor is the Assignment required universally.
I was just making sure that raid attacks didn't completely negate it.
At what point do you check to see that at least 1 personality assigned to attack that province? After Cavalry maneuvers?
If a player is under a "must do" effect, they must make choices to fulfill it. I don't foresee a scenario wherein they could refrain from Assigning in Infantry with a viable Cavalry unit, then somehow make that unit ineligible before Cav Maneuvers and sidestepping the requirement. If they don't have any eligible Cav units during Infantry, then the choice they must make is evident.
For completion: There are a couple of post-Cavalry assign cards, but those don't change that by the end of the assignment step the assignment requirement must be fulfilled.
Well, again, if you fail to make the required choices in Infantry or Cavalry, because you know you will be able to make the required choice with a post-Cav card, you can. But you can't fail to do it entirely by saying, "I have that post-Cav card" but then not using it.
So, yes you can use Enginoshi or Ring of Water to fulfill the requirement of the Dragon Box, if you want. But if you don't fulfill the requirement prior to using them, then you must use them. You can't just say, "I have them, so I don't have to Assign during Inf or Cav... but now that the opportunity has arisen to use them, I choose not to, and Maneuvers is over, so too bad."
On turn 1, if an event flips up can you cycle it before it activates?
No
if it flips up on the reveal at the start of turn, No, if later in the turn than yes.
Daisuke is correct. One-us is extra correct. 🙂
Thanks!

When we legacy do we get to look in provinces as well or no?
Not in the rules as written, however you do not lose the game if you don't find one.
The Legacy Rulebook ability now functions as following: “Dynasty: Once per game, discard a card in your Province: Search your deck for a Legacy card and refill the Province with it, face up.”
Really? Not your face-downs? I guess you don't lose if you fail to find now
Nope, and you can't search for multiple legacies anymore either. Though if you want to you could still include multiple in your deck. On the bright side it no longer costs a fate card to do so.
Also, it could be that the idea is to use it first, before any of them are face-down (except resolved Events)?
You can't control that if you play events.
Yeah, derp. I edited. 😛
Well it's still a good idea to do it in your dynasty before recruiting cards.
Once per game I knew and agree with as a balance change. Gold was a wee bit too consistent
Yeah, it'll probably make people less inclined to go for double 2-cost legacies and more for a 3 cost, unless the specific ability is needed.
Does the wind replace the favor actions or simply add an ability?
add an ability
[3D] A question about Gates of Persistence, Kuni Doru and Hunting Tiger: If I have all three in play plus a Hero, how many cards does my opponent have to discard when he targets my Hero with a battle action (assuming I use Doru's reaction and he is in the battle)? And if the Hero is Toranosuke, what happens if I use his reaction?
Action Steps:
1. Announce 2. Pay Costs 3. Choose Targets 4. Resolve Action (Targeting chosen during Step 2 actually "happens" now, for the purpose of Reacting or Triggering effects that React or Trigger from "targeting".)
So, during "2", Hunting Tiger forces the payment of "Discard a card" in addition to any other costs. If that known upcoming cost could not be paid, (because their hand was/will be empty at this point), the action was not legal to announce in the first place.
During "3" the action's target is chosen. Assuming it's a Crab Clan Hero and the non-Gates player has no Reactions, you can choose to React with Doru and/or Toranosuke. It doesn't really matter what order you do them in; Doru Forces the discard and negates the action if none happens, so the opponent doesn't really get a choice. They're going to discard and only if their hand is empty will Doru ever negate anything. Toranosuke's Reaction will negate all the action's effects, regardless of if they discard or not, but if they had an empty hand at the point you Reacted with Doru, it's already being negated so there's no reason to use it with Doru.
During "4", the action actually "targets" the Personality that was chosen in Step 3 and resolves its effects. If you used Toranosuke (or Doru when their hand was empty), the effects won't happen, but the chosen targeting still happens. It's at this point that Gates triggers and forces them to discard a 3rd card, if they have any. But if they don't, nothing changes.
Thanks for the comprehensive answer!
Also, a follow up: If I have two copies of Doru in play, is it legal to use both to force the discard of an additional card?
Yep. Ouch.
Real fast reminder, egg of panku can copy unique personalities right?
Yep
Is Asako Shino really non-unique even if Experienced? 🙂
If there are no unbowed personalities for Shiba Tensei to straighten, can they still use their ability to bow a target enemy card?
My understanding is the "straighten a target personality" is part of the effect, and not the cost of the ability.
Yes, back around the Ivory expansions, it was something done to reduce the amount of “pack waste” (opening your 4th copy of the same Unique).
From a continuing Design perspective, we no longer have packs to worry about, but we still want to make new XP versions of characters and not every iteration is so,powerful as to be gated as Unique. Unique is reserved for what we consider to be “game-shifting” effects generally.
Correct. You still have to target a Personality for the straighten effect as it is required targeting, but the Personality need not be bowed; Tensei could just target himself to fulfill the requirement, the straightening will fail, and the rest will still happen.
Would the destruction trait on Mountains of the Phoenix count for two personalities for Ring of Fire? Or does that not count as an action?
If it's a trait on the Terrain, it's not an Action.
Gotcha. Wasn't sure if the terrain itself counted as "the action".
Doubt it, but tbf I'm not an official source for answers.
I saw the confirmation emoji.
Though I noticed I got a thumbs up from THE official source so good to know I'm right 😄
Specifically worded so that it didn't interact as an action that caused destruction, as the action is "Battle: Put this Terrain into play at this battlefield"
So No Bamboo, but Golden Obi of the Sun Goddess xp2 does stuff it
Can Black Veiled Estate technically create a Raid on the opponent's turn? It doesn't have Sun Open, just Open.
Ninjas be sneaky 🙂
Does Genbu's cost reduction ability stack if I have multiple copies in play?
Yep.
Just double checking myself. Does the trait on Sacred Watch Palace activate once per turn, or each time you play a terrain during the battle?
Each time.
Thanks. I have so many eras of old rules in my head at this point that I feel like I need to double check things.
I'm assuming there's still +2 gold cost for out of clan personalities ?
Yep. Sticking with the Ivory/Onyx pricing model.
Was that when it changed? I recall it was at one time you could buy in clan for 2 less but not get their ph bonus
For the entire game until Ivory, yes.
Sorry for all the questions. I'm in deck building mode. Does Forward Camp straighten on Raids?
Thanks, was not sure when it changed as I only played imperial, then celestial, then ivory
No problem, and yes.
Probably missed this somewhere, how does one get "recon"
You "have Recon" at a Province's battlefields if you targeted that Province that turn with a Recon action.
Thanks!
Do the rulebook Favor actions count towards Ring of Air since they aren't on a Wind?
they aren't on cards
Ah, I see where I missed it
Can you get the Ring of Air with the Favor Action option? Right now I see Distractions at Court and Machinations. Is there another one I'm missing? Does using Honor to pay the Favor's cost count??
there's a few crane personalities who have favor actions on them.
and like, the only requirement is playing the favor actions, so I think that would be fine.
And/or would Lies, Lies, Lies count? It's an action that uses the favor... kinda.
The favor icon isn't in the cost.
I wound up taking the Ring of Air out of my Crane deck because actually pulling off three Favor actions in the same phase seems virtually impossible.
Do Cavalry units while defending get to assign as infantry first and then can move to oppose cavalry attackers?
I don't see why they would. Cavalry has never worked that way
I think they have always worked that way from back in the day, but I could be misremembering.
once they assign, they're done. They can't assign again
there have often been actions that could move them from place to place, and the Ivory Unicorn stronghold would allow them to reassign, but that was also after removing the Cavalry Maneuvers step.
They can assign as infantry, but can wait to assign as defending cavalry.
Maybe was it that cavalry in ivory/20F was a unit action and not a player action? so you could assign as infantry and then engage cav all your cav stuff?
Since it's going back to the old school, you first assign attacking infantry, then defending infantry, then attacking cavalry (with restrictions on undefended), and finally defending cavalry.
I have no idea what happened to Cav in Ivory/20F.
It was a Player action
You can only assign a unit once
I must just be misremembering. I thought defenders could assign cav people in the infantry segment and then move them during cavalry maneuvers. But I think I am mixing up the old cav with the engage to be all one thing.
I think you are, yes.
I forget, Brothers in Battle can you split the targets between both paragons and samurai? or do you have to pick one or the other?
Any combination.
Ok, thanks. How does the rule differentiate when it is a forced choice or when it is open?
Does Yutomo attach a 2f follower to all targets of brothers?
Rules team? Playtesters? Anybody?
lol
The Reaction only happens once per turn, so it only attaches to one of the personalities.
You get to pick which personality to React to
its not triggering 3 times
it's one trigger
the bushido virtue targets 2-3 people
"Your Personality" is not "Your Personalities"
You are reacting to the action targeting one personality
So it doesn't trigger off of Blood Brothers? since its targeting 2?
or 3?
Brothers in Battle targets 3 people all separately, even if it is at the same time
You are reacting to one of those personalities being targeted
Ok sounds good
If Suzaku is dead and I use it's ability to recruit it back to play, do I gain both the +2 Honor ability effect and the +3 Personal Honor for recruiting at full price?
Proclaiming only works when Recruiting from a Province.
Can you activate this in open and target an engage/battle action?
like... for the lion stronghold if I just wanted to use it for the discard part
Yep. The additional opportunity to take it will fail, and it also won't Banish because you didn't take it.
Thanks!
Has the regular imperial favor been updated to have a sun action? or has the favor changed?
Follow up question!
Does this mean that recruiting Suzaku from dead must always be full price? No option to pay 2 less gold
There's no "2 less gold" in this edition
All personalities are at full price. Out of clan is 2 more gold than printed.
Aligned out of clan correct?
Correct.
Otherwise you'd better print akuma with a -2 gold cost
(My Hired Killer is free on Akuma? Sweet)
2 gold is always practically free
Yep, I was just about to clarify that as a supplement to Blade's answer. Personalities 2 more Gold to Recruit if the Personality doesn't have your Clan Alignment but also does have another Clan Alignment.
Always messy before the mca when they'd print the one of for some minor clan
Apologies if I missed this is have recon while at the raid action from the MCA box? It isn't targeting a province but it seems like id have recon?
The action is Recon because you'll have Recon at the Province you shoot in the normal Attack Phase, if you win the Raid and shoot a Province.
So no recon at the raid only thereafter
Thanks
Follow up clarification. A player can only Proclaim (and gain Honor after recruiting) once per turn?
Yes
Question: if an ability requires bowing as a cost (ex. A spell like Call the Inferno). If I straighten that card, can I bow it and get its effect for a 2nd time?
I know cards with "Repeatable Battle/Open" can be used multiple times. But what if a bow cost doesn't have "repeatable"?
yeah once per turn if not repeatable
Can duty react to Storm Heart?
Yes
What happens if I declare Naval against a personality who has this weapon attached?
The trait triggers and reverts first Battle action to your opponent
Thanks!!
How do these 2 interract
Targeting is after movement, if thats your question nue
Was just curious if the reaction could actually key off of it, because the targeting happens after the movement, but the react negates everything
The Reaction can React, but instant effects such as movement can't be retroactively negated. It will negate the rest after the targeting though.
Thats what I thought
Can Yasuki Juzo's ability be used on an already dishonored personality?
Yes.
Sorry for this basic rules question:
1. If a personality is dishonored, does their Personal Honor go to zero?
2. If a personality's PH goes to zero, do they discard any attached Followers that have a PH requirement greater than zero?
1) yes
2) in Onyx Edition followers don't have HRs
Slightly more detailed answers:
1. Dishonorable Personalities have a maximum PH of 0. In order to determine the current value of any given stat, take the printed value plus or minus any bonuses or penalties, then apply any minimum or maximum. So, a Personality with 2PH who becomes dishonorable doesn't get -2PH, they get a max of 0 applied.
2. In Editions where Followers did have HRs, they would not be discarded. In general, requirements for attaching are only checked at the time of attachment, not continually.
How do Edicts work?
1. An Edict strategy lasts forever until replaced or removed by card like "Silence, Fool"?
2. Each player may have their own Edict, meaning if I play one, it doesn't affect my opponent's Edict?
Yes and yes.
If I use Jade's Embrace spell action to reduce a personality's force to zero:
a) And then opponent used another action after to increase their force, will their force still be zero?
b) What if they have an item that gives them a force bonus, will that also be set to zero?
fairly sure it cancels out just previous bonuses including weapons but not new bonuses
Setting to 0 is a one time effect that acts as a Force penalty. Afterwards, any new bonuses will add to the 0. Items technically give modifiers to Force
To elaborate on Techno's answer with an example: If there is a 2F guy with a +2F weapon attached and +1F from some action, then you "set their Force to 0", the "set" effect simply gives them a -5F penalty.
Thank you!
Hello. Question about Onyx édition : an action with the keyword « tactical « does not consume the tactician trait ? And does not need to target a tactician?
Tactical does require a Tactician, and does use up that Personality's use of Tactical for the turn
Thanks !
I have not seen that anywhere in the 20th festival rulebook
I know that was the case in Previous editiins. But it seems different in onyx / 20th festival according to the rulebook. No mention of tactical actions. Only the tactician trait is described.
It's in the Onyx Rules Datasheet, under Ability Keywords
Ok thank you. Does that mean that in strict 20th festival, not onyx, tactical abilities did not consume the tactician trait?
Also in Ivory Edition, yes.
It helped that the only Tactical ability that existed in Ivory/20F was the Rulebook one.
It's time to turn the Tactical Action from Sacred Cow into Sacred Hamburger
does proclaim count for this:
If it's the normal Rulebook Recruit action, yes. If it's from another action that is invoking the Recruit procedure, then no.
so if they reserve in and proclaim it wouldnt work?
but if they recruit normally, it would?
Yeah, it's weird, but that's how it works. The Rules under Proclaim say, "Honor gains from Proclaim come from the Rulebook Recruit action if it was used, or from the Rulebook Recruit Procedure if another action invoked it."
confusing
How do these 2 interact?
since react timing is weird
Reduces the honor loss caused (if any) by 3 (to 0), and rehonors a personality. Then, the personality targeted by the action is dishonored.
Thats how I thought it would would, but the reason it was confusing was because the action dishonors first, then causes honor loss. so I didn't know if I could specifically react after the dishonor.
when this says another location, can you choose home?
Home is a location, so yes, unless where they moved initially is Home; in that case, you'd have to choose somewhere else.
But then if it was already going home, it's also unlikely you would activate this reaction 😉
Unless you didn't want them at Home, but Nue certainly implied otherwise with the initial question. 🙂
Onyx rulesheet contradicts itself
Whoops. Should be "Before".
i figured, making sure
Naval not having "Passing that action does not count toward ending the actionround." in Onyx/ShE is purposeful?
If you pass naval and i pass first defenders action we go right to force count otherwise right?
Passing naval seems exceedingly unlikely though
Naval is an engage, so you have to pass consecutive battle actions, I thought?
Might be an accidental omission. Should 2x check with @Jeremy Sumerlin and/or @Jeff Williamson .
Passing the first Battle action due to Naval in some Editions didn't count, and probably shouldn't in Onyx/ShE/3D.
Reasoning:
- Cavalry: the datasheet’s version doesn’t target, and 20F’s does.
They never see the good old gain rhe ability to take a battle action pass combo
An open-ended "you act first" like Sneak provides numerous options. But Naval is so restrictive, if the Defender uses an Engage of their own to shut down your Naval unit, then the Battle could be pass-pass over.
Definitely an unintentional typo
Claude is a nasty rules lawyer... so many things...
Sorry basic rules question regarding "Unique" cards.
I know it's one copy of a Unique card for your deck and in your board. But does this check on a similar Unique card played by your opponent?
Ex. if I have my Egg of Pan Ku or a Ring element or a unique personality in play, can opponent put theirs into the board too?
I'm guessing the answer is yes.
Yes. Unique used to be a full-board restriction for both players, but it is not any longer.
I meant to ask, does the Egg also let you circumvent Loyal?
Loyal is only checked when entering play
Or changing controller
the 3D versions of these, what is the timing of unimpeachable vs being targeted by stormheart?
or this vs. Unimpeachable
you can use "/card Storm Heart" now
thats cool. I likely wont remember that for a while but cool idea!
Storm Heart: Name will Rehonor before the chance to refuse, so you can.
Shameful: There's a frustratingly unintuitive quirk in 20F Rules that is a relic of Ivory which probably should've been removed when the Choose Targets step was added, but unfortunately remains. So, even though the Dishonorable Personality is chosen in the Choose Targets step, long before action resolution (and thus before Name), if the target becomes illegal before action resolution starts (which would be when Name is played and Rehonors), then when a legal target "can not be found", all the action's remaining effects are negated. Note, if Name were timed after action resolution began, making a target illegal during resolution does not invalidate the choice or negate the action. I know, it seems almost contradictory, split across the smallest of hairs. Maybe now that it's come up, we'll do something to fix it, but for now, that's how it works.
