Suitengu's Surge
Multiple units have been Surged. When they re-enter play, it's an instance of simultaneous conflicting events, correct? In this case, since it is no one's turn, how is it determined which one resolves first
That's not necessarily true. There is nothing conflicting of itself in having multiple cards enter play at the same time. It can happen simultaneously. You'd need some additional triggered effect to create an actual conflict.
Also, there is no "timing limbo." An effect that happens "after the end" of a turn is still associated with that ended turn. An effect that happens "before the beginning" of a turn is associated with that beginning turn.
We tackled this issue a while ago. You can check the rules digest with the explanation in the post titled: [L5R-CCG] Rules for 5 January 2005 [RULES].
Glassblower and Raids/ Fushin and Loyal guys
1. Is Glassblower considered to be a gold producing Holding?
Yes. It produces Gold and it is a Holding. (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 100, "Glossary: Gold-producing")
2. How does glassblower interact with the Raid battle gold?
"Increased gold production applies to non-action gold producing effects and not apply to Reactions. [Partial reversal, JA, email, 8 December 2004]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Aramasu's Pride")
In short, it doesn't interact with Aramasu's Pride at all.
3. Can Fushin steal dishonored Loyal guys?
I don't see any text on Fushin that allows his ability to ignore the Loyal restrictions for controlling a card, if that's what you are asking.
Odd Raid question
The wording on Aramasu's Pride doesn't say 'gold-producing holding' anywhere. Theoretically, after a successful Raid, could you target a Shrine of Stone?
Sure.
Would that Shrine of Stone then be able to bow for 4 for the rest of the turn?
No. Shrine of Stone is not a Gold-producing holding. It has no innate Gold Production effects. Trying to raise the value of something that isn't there (gold production) does not work without first giving the value to the card (like the special rules of Yu do). (Diamond Edition Rulebook, pages 63 and 93)
Questions from a new player
1) To use the abbility of The First Dojo, can I bow Yasuki Hachi o Asahina Sezaka, or only Doji Kurohito?
"Clan Champion" is a special trait. You can break it up into "Clan" and "Champion," but you can not take the two traits for different parts of the card and mash them together to make a "Clan Champion."
Yasuki Hachi says: "Emerald Champion. Crab Clan. Crane Clan. Samurai. Double Chi. Magistrate. Experienced 2. Unique"
He is a "Crab Clan," "Crane Clan," and "Champion" card, but he is not a "Clan Champion."
Asahina Sekawa says: "Crane Clan Air Shugenja. Jade Champion. Experienced 2. Unique"
He is a "Crane Clan," and "Champion" card, but he is not a "Clan Champion."
Doji Kurohito says: "Crane Clan Champion. Samurai. Courtier. Double Chi. Experienced 2. Unique"
His is a "Clan Champion," card.
2) With The Firsdt Dojo, can I untap the personality I bowed?
No. The first Dojo says, "target up to three other Personalities you control. Straighten them." You can't target the Personality you bowed for that ability, since he wouldn't qualify under "other Personalities."
3) If I play Strategic Crossroad, which personality gains the bonis: the personalities that were moved before the terrain was played or that were moved after the terrain or the two?
Strategic Crossroad's MRP says, "Immediate Terrain. Battle: Other players' Personalities who moved into your army with an action gain +2F while at this battle. While Strategic Crossroad is in play, all players may take the action, "Battle: Move one of your units into this battle from any other location." [MRP, Wrath of the Emperor, 23 August 2004]"
That +2F clause is a continuous effect of the Terrain. It applies to any card that qualifies as long as it is in play and still has the trait. It does not matter whether the Personalities moved in before or after the Terrain is played.
4) If a personality has the ninja and samurai traits and I have an action that requires target a personality with the ninja trait and a personality with the samurai trait, can I target only my personality?
When someone says, "target an X card and a Y card" you need to target two separate cards.
5) I'm in a duel and I play Smoke and Mirrors, this reaction counts for the number of cards I'd draw with the ring of fire?
Ring of Fire says, "to draw a number of cards equal to the number you focused from your hand in that duel."
Smoke and Mirrors says, "Reaction: Play instead of focusing in a duel to discard your opponent's last focus card without effect. Draw a Fate card."
According to its own card text, Smoke and Mirrors is not "focused" since it is played "instead of focusing." If a player plays Smoke and Mirrors and goes on to win the duel and bow Ring of Fire, he not count playing Smoke and Mirrors in the number of cards he focusing in the duel.
On the other hand, if a player focused a card, had that card discarded with Smoke and Mirrors by his opponent, won the duel anyway, and then bowed Ring of Fire, he would draw a number of cards equal to the number of cards he focused, including any cards that were Discarded by effects like Smoke and Mirrors before the end of the duel.
Ring of Fire cares how many times you actually Focused a card out of your hand. Nothing else matters to it.
6) I win my second duel in the same turn, can I play the ring of fire and then play its abbility?
Yes. The Reaction on Ring of Fire happens after the duel ends. Ring if Fire's play condition is after you win a duel, which happens before the duel ends.
7) With Tsuma Dojo can I play a Smoke and MIrrors or The Shadow's Claw from my discard pile?
Not for an Action, no. Tsuma Dojo says, "Focus with it instead of with a card from your hand." That means it gives you the ability to - FOCUS - with the card, not to take Actions on the card. You can play them face-down for their Focus Values only.
It is good with Kharmic Strike, but bad with Smoke and Mirrors or The Shadow's Claw.
8) I'm in a duel with kakita, can I focus two cards and then play Smoke and Mirrors or The Shadow's Claw instead of the third?
No. Kakita says you make 1 Focus with up to 3 Cards. If you take a Reaction "instead of Focusing" then you do not Focus - at all - during that opportunity to Focus or Strike.
9) Kakita again: can I focus two cards and the third with Tsuma Dojo?
Sure. Kakita doesn't care where the cards are coming from. Tsuma Dojo says that you use a card in the Discard Pile instead of a card from your hand. That works fine.
10) I have Smoke and Mirrors in my hand and the I play The Shadow's Cloaw, can I use the Smoke and Mirrors instead of focus the card of The Shadow's Claw?
Yes. Shadow's Claw causes you to Focus, and Smoke and Mirrors can be played from your hand "instead of focusing." You could not, however, use Smoke and Mirrors for its Reaction if it were one of the top 5 cards of your deck, rather than already in your hand. This is for the same reason as answer #7 - the Action permits you to play the card as a Focus, not to play it for an Action.
11) I have Doji Konishiko with the abbility of Shame. I play a Shame from my hand, can I target the personality with Konishiko's abbility, and how many times: once or once per turn?
Once per GAME, unless the duration expires first (restored and dishonored again). When Konishiko copies the ability of Shame her new ability reads: "Political Limited: Target a dishonored Personality. That Personality's controller loses 7 Honor. No more copies of Doji Konishiko may target that Personality until he is restored to honor and dishonored again. Bow Doji Konishiko."
and if i have KOnetsu, can i target the personality with his abbility if i played before konishiko's, and how many times?
Konetsu can copy the ability from Konishiko. The ability would then read, "Political Limited: Target a dishonored Personality. That Personality's controller loses 7 Honor. No more copies of Konetsu may target that Personality until he is restored to honor and dishonored again. Bow Konetsu."
So, again, once per GAME, unless the duration expires first (restored and dishonored again).
So, you could, theoretically, use each of the following cards to cause a 7-point Honor loss on a single dishonored personality once per game until the duration expires: Shame, Konishiko-shame, and Konetsu-shame a given personality.
Forward from Jeff: Tangen Sensei [REVERSAL]
Hey folks,
On the Tangen Sensei issue, the Rules Team has concluded that the "once per battle" restriction only applies during a battle, while the legality of timing to play Tangen Sensei's Reaction is determined exclusively by the phrase: "After an action targets a card you control during an Attack Phase."
You may effectively redirect any number of Actions with Tangen Sensei during the Attack Phase outside of the Battle Action and Resolution Segments.
- Marty Lund Deputy Rules Monkey
So, go with it as written. No limit on number of uses if there is no battle occurring.
Sekawa and Weigh the cost
Sekawas action ist before the duel and not after entering it, right? So Keen Eye won?t work with this ability if I am correct.
He happens before the Personality "is challenged to a duel," which is before Keen Eye is a legal play.
If weigh the cost is revealed and there is only one card focused then the player doesn?t draw a card from weigh the cost? It was ruled like that over here. Does he get?s the + 1 focus or not?
That doesn't wash. The standing rule has always been to resolve whatever effects you can resolve. If some Fail, that doesn't stop the others. This isn't like an Action was Canceled.
So you give Weigh the Cost +1 Focus Value and draw a card. The effect of giving the other card +1 Focus Value fails.
Feign Death, Shosuro Saemo
Provided that the Oni uses his reaction, is he still a valid target for Feign Death? No where on Feign Death does it specify that the personality must remain in the discard pile, and the timing is the same on both reactions.
You can target the card, but the effect isn't useful outside of making an Honor Loss. Only effects that specifically bring a card from outside of the game into the game can do so. Effects that put other cards into play from out-of-play do not cut it.
If Maru uses her ability and the opponent chooses (will choose, will have chosen, whatever) to bow Saemon, may Saemon react for a follower?
Yes.
Is this an issue of who is doing the targeting (Maru or Saemon's controller), an issue of timing (Saemon is bowed when he could take the reaction), or something else?
Saemon says that he works when another player's Action targets him. It doesn't matter which Player does the Targeting, only whose Action targets him.
That should cover everything for Monday, January 24, 2005. If I missed your question, please repost if with the flag [RULES] as part of your Clear and Distinct subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
