Rules for 17 January 2005
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

some questions
1/If I play Kokujin's Daisho and destroy the personality card created by No Victory to it, will the Daisho gain +6F/+5C ? Basically, do the personality card have printed stats ?
The Archive entry under Tokens should apply to this situation cleanly:
"Treat references to "printed" force as "base" force for tokens. [ZF, 7 June 2000]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Tokens")
2/Can I use The Death of Ryoshun during a battle if I name a card that is in the current battle ? Does it satisfy the rule of relevance or not ?
It has an effect on that card in the battle - making any abilities it may have / obtain be unusable. That meets Relevance.
3/Can I use the Same Old Tricks on the second or later use of Chimamire's ability, even though the oni is not in play when he uses his ability ?
No. You can't normally target cards that are not in play. You basically need text that overrides this rule by either explicitly exempting you from it or instructing you to do something that always violates this rule. The Same Old Tricks won't work very well against most Action Cards either, since only Formations and Terrains normally enter play and Formations are already exempt by the card text of The Same Old Tricks.

Shinjo's Courage question
Shinjo's Courage Battle: Target a personality you control and either a follower, or a personality without followers, opposing him. Reduce the opposing target's force by the difference in personal honor between the targets' units' Personalities. If the card's force is now 0, destroy it. Gain honor equal to your personality's personal honor.
Does it matter which unit has the higher honor? ie. If my Moto Chagatai (honor 1) faces his Doji Masaru (force 2, honor 3), can I kill him?
Yes.
Having the higher honor is only relevant for the honor-gaining effect (in the sense that is is more beneficial if you have a higher PH), not the force reduction and card destruction part.
Rules for 11 January 2005 [RULES]
I have two followup questions for the rules lists for 11 and 12th of January.
<> <>From: Jeff Alexander <jalexander@a...> <>Date: Tue Jan 11, 2005 12:52 pm <>Subject: Re: [L5R-CCG] [RULES] Moto Ogedei & chi <>penalty tokens <>So, I'm still waiting on a ruling of how Tsukimi exp <> interacts with
negating a chi penalty from a token.
I never saw the original question.
Was the question, "Does she negate it entirely, or just for the current turn, then the penalty happens anyway if its source still exists?" If so, the answer is "the former".
Will Asahina Sekawa chance a token or other permanent effect permanently too?
No.
Is it any difference if there is no token, like Shukumei's trait?
No.
I don't remember that ruling. I remember ruling that you can't strike unless you've Focused - though discarding the Focus card with say, Smoke and Mirrors, has no impact on whether you have Focused or not. Playing a Reaction "instead of Focusing" does not count as focusing unless the card makes you Focus as part of its effects.
The scenario is this: Kakita challenges one of my personalities. I have no cards in my hand. In play I have a Tsuma Dojo, and a Ronin Swordsman attached to the challenged personality. Can I strike, or must I use one of the two reactions to allow me to focus?
You may strike. Abilities are never mandatory.
Silly Event Question
Is "This card remains in play in your home" on an event considered to be an "ongoing effect" of that card?
No. Brings cards into play is not an "ongoing effect." (Accumulated Rulings, "Effects")
Follow-up, therefore, can Shrine of the Sun be used to discard such an offending event such as Shattered Focus or Commanding Favor?
I don't see the Relevance of the first to the second part.
Shrine of the Sun says, "Bow and destroy Shrine of the Sun to target an Event card in play or in any discard pile. End all ongoing effects of that card. Shuffle the Event into its owner's deck."
Any way you slice it, the Event goes back into owner's deck. It works on the Event weather it is in play, out of play, has ongoing effects, or have no effects at all.
infinite combos with P'an Ku (Rules question)
My question is are infinite combos with with P'an Ku legal?
There is no standing rule in L5R that prohibits combos because you can repeat them an unbounded number of times.
Apparently there is a question that has been posted on some websites about using P'an Ku to copy the oni trait from an oni in play, then use the mask of the maw to copy Pan Ku's ability:
Open: Once per turn, target a non-Dragon Personality. Copy one of the target's abilities or boldface traits until the next time this ability is used.
Then the next step is that P'an Ku uses his ability to copy the ability from the non-dragon (technically his own ability), and then this gives him an additional ability of the same type. Then you continue to do this, only using the new ability you gain to copy it again and again until you have an infinite number.
Once you feel you have enough of these stacked abilities, you can use these abilities to then copy the -1 chi ability on Chimamire no Oni (for example) and destroy P'an Ku to basically chi death any legal targets of the opponent.
Is this true? Do the abilities stack, or is it the same ability that is trying to be reused over and over? If these are seperate abilities then is this immune to same old tricks? It is all rather confusing.
Each copy is a brand-new ability, distinct from all others.
However, you won't be able to use any but the very last one you create to copy any other abilities until the next turn, since they all have the "once per turn" restriction and have already been used.
It looks perfectly legal - not necessarily a good idea, but legal.
That should cover everything from Monday, January 17, 2005. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of your Clear and Distinct subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
