Your Rules for Sunday, June 27, 2004
Shinden Horiuchi
If I am using Shinden Horiuchi as my stronghold, and I have a Shogun's Barracks in play, can I play my spells as battle actions, per the Barracks' ability? I know cards in the deck and cards in the discard are not affected because they aren't technically mine, but I wasn't sure about my hand.
First, I'm going to assume that you mean "The Shogun's Armory," not the Barracks. The Barracks are a holding that can let you refill a Province face-up. The Shogun's Armory has a trait that lets you attach Items out of turn.
Second, no, this won't let you attach Spells as Battle actions. Cards in your hand aren't "your cards" either. They are just as unaffected as cards in the Discard Pile or a deck. You don't control any of them, which is the only thing a generic "your" looks for in cards. See also Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 105.
I was also curious if I have a shugenja with only one spell, can I bow that spell instead of the Shugenja to cast itself, or do I need one more spell?
I don't see why not. You declare the Action. You select targets. You pay costs (by bowing the Spell). You resolve effects. It shouldn't be any trouble.
Suitengu's Uncertainty
does that mean that if I have a Suitengu's Uncertainty in battle, after destroying an opposing province in "A.)", when it's "B.)", time to send my units home bowed, I can choose to send them to adjacent provinces?
"A unit returning home after battle is not considered to be moving. [JA, March 2004]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Battle":"Resolution")
Rules question re: Drunken Mantis
A little over a couple of weeks ago I asked a couple of questions regarding Drunken Mantis and you replied that you would pass them on to Jeff for the final word on the matter, I haven't seen anything regarding the final word yet so was just wondering if the questions were forgotten.
Your question was not forgotten. Jeff sent a response. I shamefully lost track of that response. I think I was messing around with the new UI on the upgrade they did to my Yahoo! e-mail service and I let the reply from Jeff disappear into the bowls of my suddenly 100Mb mailbox.
Anyway, I dug up your answer. Sorry for the wait. My message is marked in "> >" while Jeff's response is the last line, in ">"
Rules Question - Drunken Mantis and "opposing"
Drunken Mantis says: Kiho Battle: Target one of your unbowed Monks to have one of your Samurai issue an unrefusable challenge to an opposing Pesonality. Penalties do not affect your Samurai's Chi for purposes of resolving this duel. Bow the loser.
I think "opposing" only refers to the Samurai in this case,
It does.
That should cover all the Rules Questions for Sunday, June 27, 2004. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of your distinct and clear subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
