Shosuro Maru and Unrequited Love

Shosuro Maru

Scorpion Clan Distracter ï Courtier Soul of Yogo Asami Open: Bow Maru and target a player to force that player to target and bow one of his unbowed Personalities.

Unrequited Love

Political Open: Target an unbowed Human Personality during his controllerís Action Phase. His controller may bow the Personality to gain 1 Honor. If he does not, dishonor the Personality and cause his controller to lose Honor equal to the Personalityís printed Personal Honor.

Questions:

1) Can you use Maru to bow an attacking or defending personality if the targeted player has neither units at home nor at other provinces?

You may use Maru if either:

She is in the current battle, or

You have someone in the current battle AND the only possible Personalities the other player may target with her action are in the current battle.

2) Can you use Unrequited Love when you are defending?

No. Unrequited Love can only be played in the Action Phase. [card text]

3) Can you use Unrequited Love when you are targeted by Retribution?

No.

Right Hand Question

Does the second ability of the Right Hand target the personality that's being moved out of the battle?

Yes.

Speed of the Plains

When this spell is attached to an Air Shugenja, is it possible to play this action in a battle in which you have no units?

No. You must still have *a* unit there.

A Related CoW Question (Was: So Jeff)...

Assuming that there is a legal way to generate a ranged attack from a card that is not at the battle (I don't know that there is one, the only thing I can come up with is Agasha Chieh casting Kuro's Fire) could that ranged attack be used by a CoW player to reduce the enemy's province strength?

Not if it is not making a ranged attack as though it were in that battle, no.

Question, and why

Can I play a Tsurichi Technique or a Blocked Supply Lines in a battle where I have no units? I'm fairly sure you can't, so the real question I have is why... and how do I know if an action requires me to have units in the battle or not...? Does it matter if I'm defending or attacking?

It's in the Diamond rulebook on pages 80-82.

Simple Huts- Gold Producing Holding?

Simple question about Simple Huts...is it considered a "gold-producing holding" for the purposes of Crystal Mine?

Well, it's a Holding, and it produces Gold. That makes it a "Gold-producing Holding". And not just "for the purposes of Crystal Mine". It's a Gold-producing Holding, period.

At first glance, I thought yes, but upon reflection, Simple Huts does't actually *produce gold*.

It has an effect of producing 5 Gold. The fact that the cost is something other than "bow this card" is absolutely irrelevant.

Doji Jurian question

Ruling in archive by Jeff Outside effects and reactions triggered by winning or losing a duel occur before the results of the duel itself, because winning occurs when Chi totals are compared and one is found to be higher. [JA, 19-20 February 2004]

Ruling by PJ on the French list. Honor gains occur after the destruction of the losing Personality. [PJ, l5r-fr, 14 March 2003]

Jurian Text: Crane Clan Courtier. Political Reaction: Bow Jurian to negate the Honor gain from winning a duel. Lose 3 Honor.

When would Jurian do the negation.. Before..or after the dueling personality is destroyed.

When the gain occurs. [card text] As per Paul, this will be after the death of the loser (unless, of course, the card creating the duel says otherwise).

Relavence..If a dueling personality is about to die and is a courtier, could he Rhetoric the 3 honor loss from Jurian?

No.

Followup on Keen Eye vs Cancelation (Was Rules for Feb 26)

Just so I understand what you're getting at.

If a card that as an effect issues a challenge is canceled during targeting or paying costs, Keen Eye cannot negate the cancellation because a challenge has not yet been issued. If the action begins to resolve effects and makes it to "issues a challenge" and is cancelled for some reason after that then Keen Eye does work.

Right.

If so, then the ruling should be that the action must begin to resolve before anything can happen during a challenge.

Well, sure. That's a tautology. I don't see how it can be any other way. You cannot take an action that is only legal "during a challenge" until there is an actual challenge happening. This isn't a ruling. It's just plain reading the cards.

Because the definition you gave for a resolved action would otherwise prevent Keen Eye from ever being played.

Why? I still don't know what you mean by this, or why it matters. Keen Eye doesn't say "resolve" anywhere. It says "during a challenge or duel". Where does a straightforward English reading of this fail?

Question about Shosuro Tech/Berserker rage and Overconfidence

I was wondering if Overconfidence could bow an opponents personality when they play a shosuro tech on its battle abbility (and gain more force than chi) or a berserkers rage. Both cards state the force is set to value x that's what has me confused.

Changing one number to another counts as giving a bonus if the new value is higher than the old one. [DE p. 62]
